Lol the movie was one of the most terrible i’d ever seen!
I only read the chronicles and the Legend’s series.
Very good books.
Lord Soth FTW!
I’m currently reading the Gentleman Bastard series: The Lies of Locke Lamora is book one and so far it’s not bad. They deviate from the LOTR formula and I have yet to read the word “prophecy” which makes me profoundly happy.
I read a lot of the DL series in high school, and I loved it being a huge D&D nerd. Check out the D&D realm of Ravenloft, it’s known allowing characters to switch between realms. Soth ends up there at some point.
i feel as if D&D board games would own my life if I ever participated in it.
Game of Thrones has sparked a lot of people to pick up reading this Summer. I’ve already ready most of the series and looking for something new to read. Anything SRK recommends?
if you can stand THE GRIM FUTURE WHERE THERE IS ONLY WAR i would say the horus heresy books are dat awesome shit
as far as dagronlance goes im still stuck on test of the twins, somethin about these books just makes it hard for me to plod through them
I stopped after Summer Flame.
I’d like to pick them back up again though, I think I have Lost Star and Vanished Moon lying around somewhere.
Looks like I will have to pick up the Amber series though.
^Drizzt + Forgotten Realms = Win. (Also, Elminster + Forgotten Realms = Win, now back to topic)
I am a sucker for Dragonlance. I’m actually a Dragonlance novel collector. (And Krynn Historian… yes… I was THAT guy…). Krynn is an awesome place no doubt about it.
Is there ANY mage in all of fantasy novels greater than Raistlin??? I would think not. Gonna check out the suggestions made by yous guys.
Which series from the Forgotten Realms would you recommend I start with??? I’m unfamiliar with this universe and contemplating getting the Elminster saga to see how he compares with my boy Raistlin.
Elminster’s books are epic and grand in scope and cover vast portions of time. If you’re looking for an overview of the history of the Realms, or at least seeing parts of history from one (very old) man’s viewpoint. The Elminster Saga is hard to put down. Comparing Elminster to Raistlin makes for very interesting comparisons. They both went through alot of crap in their youth and wound up radically different people. (Of course Elminster was never inhabited by the Spirit of someone the power of fistandantilus either…). But as the Chosen of Mystra, its hard to deny Elminster’s badassness.
And to your point, if there is any mage in fantasy novel land who is as awesome as Raistlin Majere (even if he’s not quite as popular) it is without a doubt Elminster the “Sage of Shadowdale” (Not to spoil anything, but he’s so awesome he literally told off the Creator of the Universe to his face… that takes balls)
Most any of Michael Moorcock’s fantasy novels are fantastic, especially the Elric novels and the two Corum trilogies. Elric probably tops Raistlin for badassery.
For light reading the first three Earthsea novels are great. Get to see basically three episodes in the life of an extremely powerful wizard, from screw-up kid to journeyman to archmage. I don’t suggest anything after the first three books though- the subsequent stuff was written YEARS later and has some retconning and a different flavor.
The fantasy books I recommend most though, and the sophisticate’s choice for sure, are Perdido Street Station and it’s sequels by China Mieville. Its a more cosmopolitan approach to fantasy, and utterly fucked up in a good way.
I stopped with Summer’s Flame as well, question for anyone who has gone further-
WTF?
Spoiler
So now there are only a handful of dragons alive on Krynn, most of them having killed each other to gather magic? Could swear I read that somewhere, killed the series for me. This basically turns it into Forgotten Realms, the unique thing about Dragonlance was that dragons were a part of human life.
I picked up the Death Gate Cycle but had to put it back down after starting the second book in the series. The action isn’t picking up so I decided to start the Elminster series. I’m reading the Making of a Mage. I’m hoping the subsequent books are good…
whats the second book? elven star? The third one is good, he goes to this lava planet. It’s really a series that gets better as you read it cause more of the story unfolds in each book.
fucken a. those draconian books were sick.
about death gate, i don’t want to hype it so much it doesn’t live up to expectations. But i’ve read so much shit when it comes to fantasy novels…(not much stuff in the last 5 years though) like all of the dragonlance books, all of the forgotton relams, dark sun stuff, etc etc etc. And it’s probably my favorite series tied with the twins series…i might even closely rank it above it.
and it sounds like we might both like the same types of books so maybe you’ll like it.
So, when can we get a real Dragonlance live action movie…
Found the thread I created in 2007 lol:
To whoever asked about whether or not they should read the Amber trilogy (the last 3 books of Dragonlance) here’s a spoiler if you don’t want to read them:
Mina is a goddess/god who forgot that she is a goddess/god. This is why most of the dragons speak to her in riddles and leave her alone. Dragons dare not challenge gods/goddesses. Most dragons care about treasure and power…
