Draglade (Banpresto/DIMPS' new 2D fighter for the DS)

I made a mention of this game awhile ago in an old topic about fighting games for handhelds, but nevermind, I’ll just make this new topic for this new bit of news.

First off, a brief, yet still some-what in-depth preview of Custom Beat Battle can be quoted as follows:

“…Basically, [the Custom Beat System] is a bit like how records work in Samurai Champloo for PS2. New beats allow different combo chains, and it seems you have the ability to actually create beats yourself. Also, I can’t recall if this was mentioned before, but Wifi is now confirmed for the game. There will be realtime ranking, and for local users, download play is supported.” - insertcredit.com

In short, this game is looking to, as digg.com puts it, “achieve the homeostasis of the RPG, Rhythm Action and Fighting genres in a single game.” - http://digg.com/gaming_news/Prepare_...om_Beat_Battle

Whether or not Banpresto and DIMPS are actually up to the task or not is something that will have to indeed be seen to be believed, but I’m inclined to believe that these two could actually make this something unique, fun and yet another interesting fighter for the DS. We’ll see though, once the game actually ships 3/21/2007.

Also, you can view a very short commercial here: http://www.draglade.jp/move_1_00.html

Between Bleach, JUS and now this game, it looks like the portable fighter genre for DS may be on the up on up…and I like how there’s both WiFi and download play.

Hmm…Looks interesting, but honestly, I just don’t know.

Well form the little clip all I can say is, I need to see more.

Yeah i’ve been keeping up with this game. Since Dimps is working on it, it’s gotta be pretty good.

Looks like Dust Strikers…

Beats and Rhythms in a fighting game? Sounds like Slap Happy Rhythm Busters for PSX. :looney:

Hoping the best for it, because this is one DS owner that is very dissatisfied with the fighting game choices on the DS. I swear everytime I see Dust Strikers at my store, I have that happy feeling well up in my chest. Of course I know the game is utter garbage, but that doesn’t stop me from having hopes that I’ll find street fighter or kof in the same drawer.

Sadly, I never do.

ewww duststrikers =(

Doesn’t look like dust strikers. =\

I also fail to see the Dust Strikers resemblance. I mean, as of right now, we’re not even sure if the game supports up to 4 players, not to mention that there’s nothing that seemingly points to that all of the levels will be full of different platforms to climb up and down.

If there’s anything that this game has an overall similarity to at the outset (but probably will have plenty of engine differences upon actual play), it’s probably Bleach DS. Not that that would be a bad thing, though, as Bleach DS is certainly a nice role model to follow, and certainly a better one than GG DS.

wheres the CUTE PLAYABLE FEMALES

Dunno. But since this game has been marketed as a sort of “tribute/wink wink” to old shonen fighting manga where “boys will be boys…and then punch each other in the face”, who knows if there will actually be any girls.

Besides, between the likes of Arcana Hearts and the various doujin games out now, all of the feasible female designs have more than likely been taken! XD

needs more info, but the like 2 seconds of gameplay looked cool.

A bit more to report, thanks to finding another insightful blog…

*…Apparently the game will include RPG-like elements such as leveling up by beat-battling, purchasing new items from merchants, and visiting with townsfolk as depicted above. “Hey punk, are you a grapper? What kind of beat combos are you throwin’ down?”

Grapper?!?!? Yes not only has Banpresto decided to create the all new Rhythm Fighting RPG genre, but they have also invented new words to describe the action.*

According to this screen shot “grap” is a new fighting form that incorporates sound/music into battle. Presumably a “grapper” is then one who graps. And grap you shall as Custom Beat Battle Draglade allows you to fully customize your character with over 100 special attacks to form beat combos MJ himself would envy. And if you think you’ve got what it takes to be a world class grapper, take your show on the road via Wi-Fi.

*Here is a sneak preview of how the action will look on the DS, or should we say “Dragon Sequencer” as it is referred to in the game. Notice the bottom-right corner of the top screen. That is the rhythm meter. Time your button combinations to the beats as they flow across the screen to unleash awesome special attaks.

All kidding aside, Custom Beat Battle Draglade appears primed to unseat both Jump Ultimate Stars and Ouendan from the top of the PG best seller list in one fell swoop. Look for it!*

Though the whole “Grapping” thing may be something to either :looney: , or just  at, reading more about the game in general just entices me.

For instance, I’m liking how the game may end up having a “story” mode that may be akin to something not too far removed from Guardian Heroes/Advance. And as I’ve said before, the whole “beat” thing may be indeed an interesting gameplay mechanic. Ouendan meets Guardian Heroes? Who da thunk…

All I hope is that, if they are indeed taking a few notes from Treasure’s classic, we’ll be able to unlock more characters after getting through the game’s main story mode. 100 possible buyable moves and a lot of customization aside, it just would be nice to have more than just 4 characters…but we’ll see…

gRAP BATTLE

I dont post much but there’s some updates in the movie section for those interested in the game.

Ah, you beat me to the punch…

But any way, small overview.

From what I gather, the “Custom Beat” thing is basically a combination of say, Street Fighter Alpha 2/3’s Custom Combos, with Bemani style timing (how good you time out the beats will determine how hard hitting the blows are, and if they may even combo correctly).

And of course, there’s the 100 different “items”, which more or less serve as extra attacks and such.

In any case, this thing still looks interesting to me…I’ll continue to watch it over the next few weeks.

Oh…and for those interested…I’d recommend just watching the 2 minute promo clip for more game footage and game instructions.

Certainly looks promising

Ok. So the game is out in US now. Is anyone playing it? It has wi-fi and such.

Played it a bit in japanese, wasn’t too impressed with the characters and the system. Seems you’re better off with Jump All-Stars still.
