Do's and dont's for your first MvC3 tournament

Nothing cam compare with my soul calibre 2/madden tourney where you had to use random select.

You went to a tournament run by scrubby ass shits who don’t know that many fighting game players use sticks; as well as pads. Any type of controller should have been allowed period. Sticks don’t make things better, it’s personal preference. Hell, inthul plays pad and he’s one of the best Fei Long players out there. They screwed you over on the rules and you should have walked out.

It was the same way when I played in the SFIV Gamestop Tournament 2 years ago. I couldn’t change the buttons and it was on a 360 pad. I lost and wasn’t too happy about it; where other Gamestop locations allowed different button configurations.

Any type of tourney when the rules are just out there, don’t waste your time.

Marvel 3 players being uninformed and/or stupid as fuck?

THIS IS NEW AND EXCITING.

I would’ve left after waiting over an hour just to play.
The host didn’t plan this well at all.

Tournaments starting late is the norm, not the exception. Show up when they say, but don’t be upset if they start and end late. Just take the time to play some casuals to warm up. However, banning sticks is inexcusable and you should have immediately walked out as soon as they wouldn’t let you use your own stick. There’s nothing wrong with others using pads, but forcing their choice on you is absolutely retarded.

Here’s my similar story. There wasn’t any scene in my city that I knew of for any fighting games, so I was pretty stoked to learn that a couple decently-sized anime conventions were going to be holding SF4 (this was before Super) tournies. I got up bright and early with a friend of mine to go to the first one at a local rec centre; it was being organized by some local “gaming centre” or something, so we figured it would be OK. Turns out, the tournament format was single elimination, one best 3/5 game (instead of the usual best 2/3 games, best 2/3 sets), with Seth and Gouken banned. Several people brought sticks but none were allowed to be used. Oh yeah, and there was only one tv: the tournament was in the attached movie theatre, and the tv was the movie screen.

Obviously that was a total waste of time. I found out the other convention’s tourney was going to be similarly stupid ahead of time thankfully, due to knowing a guy who was working at the event. Fast forward a year, and the conventions are having SSF4 tournies with the same bullshit. My friends and I are smart enough to avoid them this time. I decide that enough is enough, I can organize a way better tournament than these idiots. So I did. I booked rooms at my university, co-ordinated with some people to get lots of set-ups, and started hosting small tournaments. I managed to get in touch with the other decent players in the city and we’re now going to be having our third monthly-ish tournament, and they’ve all been successful so far. So, the moral of the story is, if you want something done right, just do it yourself.

A friend went to a MvC2 tournament about a week before MvC3 hit at some shitty gamestop in a mall and there was a “no infinites or guardbreaks” rule and they were running the PS2 version on the PS3. Because you can’t use a PS3 TE to play PS2 games, he couldn’t use his stick. Luckily I had a HRAP in the car.

Long story short he won a free copy of marvel 3.

We already have a tournament and stream related thread. post your stories there.
