Doom 2? Anyone interested?

Since this is called Computer and Handheld Matchmaking I’d thought I’d take a stab at this. The original program for Doom95 doesn’t have support, but this does, http://legacy.newdoom.com/

This is 100% legal, as this is just a launcher. You will need the .wad file to play (by me distributing it, would NOT be legal, i.d. Games still own the rights to the .wads.).

As you read, this program has the support for a lot of people, so we can get like 10 people co-op or 20 people deathmatch.

With this port you can mouselook, strafe, there are graphical improvements, fireballs look better, sprites look a little more smoother, etc.

Also if you are behind a firewall, a program called Hamachi will bypass it, by when you join a server it creates an imaginary “LAN” type connection. You can download the basic version of Hamachi on their website www.hamachi.cc
The server I’ve made is called “SRKDoom” and the password is “doom” (w/o the quotation marks).

I’m usually available almost every night for some games co-op or deathmatch, whatever is cool with people want.

If I get enough people interested I’ll make an IRC channel on EFNet or Espernet.

i would be down for a co-op

Playing on the Legacy port is somewhat useless since it’s netcode kindof sucks. If you want you can try ZDaemon and Skulltag for some of the best online experiences. Also on ZDaemon you may find the elite playing around, guys like Devastation, Ocelot, Johnsen and the rest, although I doubt you would find that encounter pleasing. I myself am a ZDaemon player, mostly inactive lately tough but still I am there.

used to be deep into doom netplay just a few years ago, perhaps we could get somethin’ goin’ on again here

though if anything without the ancient netcode of legacy; i’d be down for using odamex or skulltag

Oh yeah I forgot about odamex shmodamex, still don’t count out ZDaemon, it is the one with the most servers and players active, although the current community is kind of really really bad.

Were you on ZDaemon pdk? I can’t figure out if you sound familiar or not …

Oh, interesting. I just chose legacy because it’s braindead to use. I’m really just down for co-op, but I was willing to play deathmatch with people if you were interested.

i’m all about deathmatch/ctf/whatever but coop is fine and dandy too depending on the maps; if anyone wants i could slap up the links for a few of the most common mapsets out there (though we all know what the #1 most played is…)

and i used to pop up on zdaemon once in a while (never registered on the forums, probably never will considering the likes of people like raider) but i used to be fairly active in skulltag before i realized how braindead everyone there was

and if anything none of the ports out there are that hard to set up at all, usually just a matter of pointing them to the right folders like with mame

stop trying to get us to play this game >___<

jk :stuck_out_tongue:

Well, since I don’t have the client you guys use, do you think you can write a quick tutorial on how to set it up?

what port you’ll want depends on what you’re looking for:
chocolate doom is as close as you’ll get to the original doom EXEs, most of the nuances and non-game-breaking bugs are emulated down to a T (something which can’t be said of most other ports), with the biggest differences being to “modernize” the netcode and make it easier to use
odamex is more “pure” and accurate in terms of emulating vanilla doom gameplay (lots of ports make tweaks here and there, some differ more than others) than zdaemon or skulltag while still adding a reasonable amount of new additions such as team deathmatch, capture the flag and new client/server netcode
skulltag can probably best be described as doom with quake 3 elements; it has somewhere around 11 multiplayer modes, supports most of zdoom’s fancy-pants editing functions (and that’s a lot of editing power), but may be a bit too “newschool” for your tastes
zdaemon could be described as riding the middle ground, it has stuff like capture the flag and some of zdoom’s additions but not very many of skulltag’s fancy new toys (a good or bad thing, depending)

if i recall zdaemon supports either 16 or 32 players, while skulltag supports 32 and odamex supports “a theoretical maximum of 255” (which probably comes out closer to a reasonable number of 32 in practice but we’ll see); zdaemon currently runs on windows only, skulltag runs on windows and linux, and odamex runs on just about any OS you’d want

none of them are particularly hard to set up i believe, for chocodoom/skulltag/zdaemon the first step of getting them to work is usually just pointing them to the location of your doom2.wad; chocodoom’s setup program can be used to start games, and with zdaemon/skulltag you just need to edit one line of a config file (i’ll look it up later) unless you’re putting them in the same folder where doom2.wad already is (then all you do is run them)
odamex i believe also involves simply pointing it to your doom2.wad and running it

Okay, I’ve been kinda busy with things, and now able to play again. So, I just want to get a general consensus of people who want to play co-op Doom.

Most likely we’ll play on Chocolate Doom, or zdaemon.

Feel free to add me on Aim/MSN.

to start some games up.

i have chocolate doom and i just got odamex up and running yesterday (there was a new version a few days ago, check it out) though i guess i can go zdaemon if we have to

also i could probably host some games, for some reason hosting worms armageddon simply stopped working for me a few months ago but hosting kaillera p2p and such still works fine so i guess we’ll see if this still works when we cross that bridge

on a side note i forgot to mention that chocolate doom’s faithfulness to the original includes keeping the 4 player limit, naming players according to suit color instead of a username, and only having co-op and deathmatch (no fraglimits unlike other ports, just a timer); again, bad or good is up to you

Got teh blue screen, with the goldeneye mod. ;( Teh vista sucks.

check some of the posts above and you’ll see we won’t be using legacy, don’t worry

Okay, I wanna try and get a small co-op session together this Thursday. Time is not much of a problem, as long as it is after 4:30 p.m.

decided on a port, maps, etc you wanna use?

Okay, I played Zdaemon with a couple people last night and it was good (I liked it) We have a small irc channel on mint.sayuri.ca in channel #SRMDoom (SRM is a netplay MBAC community) We’ll probably play everyday for a bit in the evening, and we already have a co-op server and deathmatch server setup, so go ahead join the channel if you are up for a game and gather people (right now we only have consitent 3-4 people.)

hey, whats going in here guyzzzzzzzzzzz, im a regular zDaemon player, hit me up on AIM-The Real X9

I’m SoupyShoe on zDaemon, just like the rest of my online IDs,lulz
