Dontblowthis.com Super Turbo Revolution stream!

Kind of an up and down session today as we were missing some of the usual cast members, had technical issues and lost some viewers to the nfl. Nonetheless we still put out a couple great matches. Please check em out if you missed them and thank you to the thousands who watched live.

We have also created a ggpo and supercade account that those in our group will randomly be using. Look for the tag “DontBlowThis.com” on those services and play us.

Where the hell did Mars “Body” Gatti come from with that DeeJay? I was pleased with my match against him with DeeJay and BEATING HIM!!! lol

When is the next stream going to be?

We return on February 13th @ 2pm EST. Come spend Valentine’s weekend with your real true love, the grandmaster challenge! Join the thousands and watch top level matches with several tournaments at 60fps all day. ST REVOLUTION

We have received many messages and requests from players wanting to join us so you may see some new faces and of course usual crew will all be back in full force.

Thank you to the many that have picked up their dontblowthis/super turbo revo merch from the store. Every little bit helps and i know for sure there are some guys on $RK that would love some DSP or Damdai shirts :-*

As far as people freaking out about sf2/Evo. Simply calm down and stay tuned.

Thank ye

It looks like DSP improved to the point be became Asian.

The awful color, what have you done to our beautiful stream!

yeah…It gets tough managing that crazy chat box, doing commentary and also updating the player names all while trying to defeat these beasts. (If someone wants to volunteer to be a mod on the dontblowthis streams, please send me a pm. Just keep in mind that you will have your hands full hah)

Anyway that is obviously not dsp, but East Coast OG player Jaime. He’s a great chun player and very important to us for a few reasons. Excellent that he finally joined us. He had some great matches with perhaps America’s best chun - Chris Doyle! Here is the match for those that enjoy the hot chun on chun action. dontblowthis 1/23/11 part 2, 2010 01 23 dontblowthis ST 16:48 dontblowthis on USTREAM. Classic Video Games

I’m happy that you guys are supporting ST in spite of EVO dropping it from its main lineup. It’s great that I can watch top players play (although I’d personally like to see more Dhalsim matches). Having said that, I think that the stream itself really lacks direction. Perhaps you guys are still experimenting and seeing what works and what does not for the format, but in its current form it is somewhat lackluster. 2 players play. Winner stays, loser leaves. repeat. It’s fun to watch but after the 1000th Hawk match it kind of grows old.

Some ideas:

  1. Themes
    a) weekly ranbats: incorporate a ranking system. Also, you could experiment with your idea of letting online players play you guys to include others that would not normally be able to be there with you.

b) “low tier”, “mid-tier”, “top tier” tournies: Self explanatory. This way a variety of characters get used to keep it fresh.

c) hi vs low: similar to 1b, except half the participants use upper- and the other half use lower-tier characters

d) bad matchup tourney: Tourney play where matches consist of “bad matchups.” Players advance in the tournament based on their knowledge of and ability to win bad matchups. When it’s time for Player A and B to play, a bad matchup gets randomly selected. Given this random matchup, Player A and B in turn get randomly assigned to each character. Winner moves on; loser goes to loser’s bracket. Then a NEW bad matchup is randomly selected for the next two players who in turn get randomly assigned to the players in the bad matchup, etc. The winner of the tourney is the one who has won the most bad matchups. You could give a trophy of a sausage for the winner.

  1. announcers: ok yea you got your “this is the super turbo revolution…” line at the top of the recorded segments, and you have people who talk on the microphone who can be labeled as “commentators,” but in all honestly, the commentary, that is, the 1% of time that someone is actually speaking, is lackluster, if not tangential to the entire match. The sausage thing had its moment, but it’d be great to listen to commentary focusing on the actual matches, offering explanations of subtle things that other people don’t know about the matchup, etc. I mean I recall one or two occurances of this, but it needs to be consisent and more frequent. Having announcers, esp. ones who know the matchups being played would really help break it down to new players. I.e. Dhalsim wants to keep hawk out at all times. He has many ways to counter a lot of hawks moves like …, Hawk wants to corner sim to do his throw loop (I’m guessing here, I main Sim), he can counter Sim’s limbs using the following strats …, etc. Have one person dedicated to doing informative, relevant, and coherent commentary throughout the duration of the stream. As enthralling as it is to listen to DSP mimicking Daffy Duck, it gets a bit dull without consistent commentary.

  2. character analysis: I mean it doesn’t have to encompass the entire show like the tekken guys do with their “level up your game” segment:
    example found here

but it would be nice to have people take a break from the action and get into some strategy. Incorporating this would also allow for more fan participation. You don’t have to include frame data necessarily… but you should definitely showcase hitboxes, thus allowing newbies to get a visual explanation of why and where move A beats move B and vice versa

a) People could email you guys questions or post them on SRK and you could respond on the stream citing the person’s name (much like Rockerfeller did on the Dr Subzero Show). This way the people feel like they are a part of the stream.

b) Another idea: focus on a new character each week, or maybe even one aspect of each character each week (so that a player who plays Guile doesn’t have to wait 3 months to see new stuff on their character)

c) Matchup focus: This is 3b in a way, but since ST can be thought of as a game of matchups, this could really help as opposed to offering generic general strats. You could showcase each matchup using players in the room.

  1. stable Internet connection: I know you guys do your best to make this top priority but it was an issue in the last stream and a lot of people left as a result.

  2. Just ST please: I like Third Strike, but when I tune into a stream called “Dont Blow This: This is the Super Turbo Revolution,” I came to see ST, not 3S.

  3. Prize giveaways: Self explanatory. Winner of a match/trivia contest can get some Don’t Blow This merchandise.

  4. Correct names: Clearly DSP isn’t asian, but based on the previous stream, one might get the impression he is.

  5. Venues featuring ST: It’s great that you guys are communicating where and when these are being held, but it would go a long way if you could have some sort of graphic displaying this in words to reinforce the information.

  6. random cool ST stuff: For instance, you could do a segment on Cigar Bob’s cabinet, the Seattle scene, how to make your own cabinet, … etc. Just the ways in general people are keeping ST alive. Kinda like what video game magazines in the 90’s once did for arcades before it wasn’t cool to do so anymore.

  7. The Japanese scene. I’m sure people are interested in this, but not everybody knows who Matsun and Aniken are. It would be interesting to have a weekly update on the scene, or you could do a segment on a particular player, or arcade, how Gian plays Sim differently from Hakase, KKY, Danjiri, history of X-Mania, ST at SBO, etc. Just stuff that you’d normally have to be in the know to know, or know where to look to find compiled in one concise weekly segment.

  8. The world scene: Ok yes, 10) should be in 11), but Japan is Japan. It would be interesting to do segments on (or even determine if there even are scenes in certain cases for) asia, europe, australia, etc. For instance, I’m sure the guys at fighter101.net would love to be showcased.

  9. Yoga Book Hyper Translations: Self explanatory.

  10. Front page SRK status: Make sure that your stream is advertised properly on SRK’s front page each week. Self explanatory.

  11. Start on time: self explanatory.

Just some ideas off the top of my head. I’d like to see ST kept alive and this weekly stream take off so that ST can return next year at EVO, or perhaps even this year (although this is unlikely…)

We’re talking about John Rambo and DSP here, not exactly the cream of the intelligentsia. Daffy Duck impressions and comic book talk is about as good as it’ll ever get.

The level of anger in your posts is staggering.

@ Warrior Dreams

Thank you for taking a great interest in what we have been doing. I appreciate all of your suggestions and criticisms as well. A few things I want to make sure your clear of- this is not a weekly stream, our group is from all over the place so thats not possible. We are pretty much running 2x a month and If there is a stream then it will always be on the front page of $RK(even had one of our promo vids featured on front page). You have to realize that we do this in our spare time for free and the main idea here is to have fun and show people that ST is fun. This is why we run a very loose format. Though we do always have 2-3 structured tournaments, usually singles and 2 team events. With that being said your suggested ideas are all things we have considered and you may see us do things like that on youtube or on the actual dontblowthis.com website(which is currently under construstion). If you wanted to work on things like that yourself we would def help you any way possible.
We usually stream from 6-9 hours so it becomes difficult to cover the entire thing with commentary. I would disagree with you and say that about 70% of it has actual commentary and have gotten great feedback about it. I dont remember a daffy duck impression ever actually happening but its quite possible hah. We go through a long list of upcoming tournaments several times throughout the day and tell people about ggpo/supercade. Thank you for wanting to see our stream take off, but it most definetly already has. Over 1000 viewers at all times over a 6-9 hour period, many of whom are new to the game, watching super turbo and getting interested in ggpo/supercade and possibly going to a real tournament, this is a pretty substantial contribution. Plus as you can see dudes on $rk are jealous and upset so thats a good sign you have become a success!

Who, me? You’ve misread amusement for anger.

To each their own, honestly I really like the casual style that they’re doing, it’s as if you’re just hanging out with the guys while they’re just doing another casual session. One suggestion is maybe have a 3-4 rotation cap (ei. one person can run a train on everyone at most 4 times, once you’ve beat everyone in a row 4 times then give your spot up but come right back in when it’s your turn).

Someone fly me out and I’ll show them all the longest yard!

That’s marketing genius right there.

Thank you for your consideration.

Agreed. You and Fatboy should team up together and show them how it’s done!

How does this attitude encourage more people to pick up ST, or watch your stream, or even help the fighting game community?

Agreed. It was just a suggestion, not an ultimatum.

Hehe, The views expressed by Mr. McJustin are his own and do not reflect those of the entire operation.

Again, thank you for the suggestions and critisims from warrior’s dreams and geo!

Geo: you are located in Seattle? Is it possible for you to cover the ST tournament coming up there for us?

ps: El Grog es muy bueno, that is all.

I’m not sure what cover means, but there’s actually two upcoming in Seattle: NorthWestMajors and the one that Airthrow is organizing.

Made me think of this

But have you seen him do “The Viking” ?

Lol, it does
