I didn’t realize this till you mentioned it. My mind is semi-blown.
IDK how playable PSO would be for the PC, but it’s cool I guess. I usually prefer a PC port anyway.

phantasy star 5 would be worth getting excited about
not this
bingo… I am paying monthly for internet, paying a large amount of $$$ for annual XBL fees, and then you ask for MORE money to play a game, and for DLC? Fuck that, sorry
FYI, this is a PC game in the same vein as PSO Episode 4: Blue Burst.
I think this will be a console game too. Console generations usually only last around 5 or 6 years and the current systems are lagging way beyond current PC capabilities. I’m sure new consoles are on the way soon, but they are holding off on the announcements to sell their gimmicky motion-based crap (although that is starting to look good now, new Panzer Dragoon!?!?). So of course Sega can’t come out and say that they are possibly developing this game on a console that hasn’t been announced yet.
This made my eyes water and gave me goosebumps.
I don’t think I’ll ever grow up!
Two things:
Japan has a Phantasy Star Portable 2: Infinity coming out 4th quarter of this year. It is essentially MH:G type of upgrade.
Where did you guys read that Aksys had anything to do with PSP2 (or 1)? I’m fairly certain that Alfa Systems developed it.
How do vehicles and a world map sabotage the game? Granted, Dr. B isn’t designing the game, but still: if these elements are thoughtfully implemented, what harm to they cause?
I personally do not enjoy world maps in my action MMOs. Hubs are fine. I really don’t like spending half an hour walking from place to place in order to try a new level. I like instances much more than open world because they are like levels.
I also don’t like vehicles in this type of game.
It sounds like your issue is with time spent doing little to nothing, which is not a symptom of world maps and can easily find its way into any game, hub or otherwise.
You’ve played a game like this with vehicles? I didn’t know there were any.
Dr. B’s vehicle has 17 turrets all controlled with his mind.
Just wanted to leave this here:

They got to bring raising the Mag up again
Well, I’m just a fan of the level-based hack-n-slash connected by a hub. And I haven’t played a game like PSO with vehicles, but I think they would ruin the overall feel of the game.
In my opinion, PSP2 is just about perfect and they should use it as the base for PSO2. The ability to block and dodge-roll has made the game much more enjoyable as an action game. You also have augmentations that you learn as you level up your Class, such as ATP Up and Healing Up, which allows you to build your character how you like (there is a limit to how many you can equip…so you can’t make yourself GDLK). You can choose what rank you have for each weapon regardless of class (but there is still a limit as to what level Photon Arts you can use with each class). The only thing that PSP2 really needs is to buff Techs, because they are weak in this game. Also, the return of Mags would not be bad, I hated how they handled Mags in PSU.
EDIT: I feel that I should mention that PSP2 also has Challenge Missions.
^ PSP2 sounds like it would be a good base. That’s one gripe I had about PSO: you really couldn’t customize.
Dr. B can’t be customized, but his strength his infinite and his Mad Sexiness omnipresent.
Off PSO World, a list of statements in the teaser video translated into English by EspioKaos:
It’s clearly using PSP2 as a base from what I can see. Fuck yeah Photon Arts are still in.
Phantasy Star 4 is one of my favorite games of all time, so ya, looking forward to this. Starving for any online action rpg right now.
I am actually installing Diablo 2 as we speak. Went and picked up the “adventure pack” today actually. Been a few years, any tips appreciated
Sweet, they didn’t completely retcon PSU elements like I feared. Hopefully though they mean “all new” when they say new Photon Arts; we don’t really need another game with Dus Majarra or Anga Jabroga in it. Anyone who plays PSU knows of what I speak.
Am I the only one that actually misses the independence of casting and weapons? I could never get into the PSP Phantasy Stars 'cause of this whole “equip this weapon with the ability you want here for this mode, equip this weapon for that” and each weapon having its own personal MP for every action as opposed to PSO’s simple 3 actions + toggle for 3 more + character MP? It just felt like once PSU came out, they decided to make it convoluted as hell. I mean, I liked the idea of quick switch between melee and ranged, but I’d prefer it utilize that using PSO’s style of complete independence. Make a primary and secondary weapon equip and just have the various attack options use weapon a or weapon b, with a switch time in between depending.
Well, PSP2 has brought back character PP instead of weapon PP. You can still switch weapons on the fly and you have to equip spells to each weapon. There are two reasons for weapon switching. One, so you can exploit enemy weaknesses. Two, so you can avoid enemy resistance. Note that those are not the same thing. Obviously, enemies have an elemental weakness based on their element, but in PSP2 enemies can also be resistant to one type of attack (melee, ranged, magic). This means that your character needs to be able to do at least two of these types attacks at any time. PSU and PSP also had resistance to attack types, but some enemies could be resistant to two types of attacks (which really sucked for solo’ing).
I just didn’t like how to use magic it had to be equipped to a staff, which then made you have to USE the staff as one of your equips. That I found silly.
Re: the independence of casting and weapons:
I hate that PSO works like Diablo 1: the only “special abilities” are spells (and the occasional PSO rare weapon third attack) and melee is basically left in the cold.
I think Torchlight has an ideal system that this PSO2 should copy, and here’s the 411 on it:
With PSO, you could take this one step further, and give every class, say, two skill trees for their archetype (Hunter, Ranger, Force) and one for their race (Human, Newman, Cast, Beast, whatever).
So a RAmar’s skill trees would look like this:
Whereas a RAnewearl would look like this:
And a FOnewn would look like this:
On top of that, you could equip up to 4 techs from a selection of many into 4 universal tech slots.
This would give a ton of customization and fun (assuming the abilities are well-designed, which, let’s be real, they won’t be). I could make, say, a HUmar that’s invested in the Hunter tree emphasizing multi-target weapons (greatswords, spears), granting me physical skills (Air Slash from PS4, the WoW/Diablo Whirlwind, etc.), grabbed some passives to help his healing techs (from his Human tree), and equipped Resta, Anti, Reverser, and, I dunno, Shifta.
Dr. B would have access to all the trees and all the techs at once, of course.
