Don't mess up Sega, Phantasy Star Online 2

How in the hell did my laptop didn’t even score 1000 points on the benchmark test? It’s not even 2 years old and it even has intel i7. :shake:

I had no interest in this, but then I got my hands on the creator tool and holy fucking GOD now I can’t live without this game I gotta have it immediately if not sooner.

Even if it is a Japan-only release surely that doesn’t mean we can’t run some unofficial stateside servers? A mod or something? I gotta play this so bad. I want to run around blasting shit as my ultra-buff catgirl amazon.

Do you have a video card or are you just using your processor’s onboard graphics? Onboards are always terrible, suboptimal at best for games if they can even display them properly. You need a video card. I had the same issue for a while, I had to use the onboard on my i5 for a long time before I got my 560TI. Couldn’t play shit until then.

Running an unofficial server would be difficult, to say the least. While ST has a horrible track record with security, the way they handle their servers has made them difficult to reverse engineer. Not to mention those that have done so in the past are, well, lazy or assholes now.

Fortunately(?) ST hasn’t seemed to care about foreigners as long as they pay like everyone else and don’t go around trolling. Hell, the game would probably last longer if it didn’t get a US/EU release. (if this is the case, I hope that ST doesn’t store all the text on the fucking server again though. Translation patch possibilities please.)

Also don’t worry too much about benchmark results right now. ST isn’t known for their amazing optimization.

“Unofficial” servers for this game will probably never exist. Like Breaker said, the way they do things is next to impossible to mimic.

I’ve been waiting for a PSU private server for a couple of years now and nobody is even close to it, and Schthack has downright given up.

I would love to see a translation client-side mod for PSO2, though…

Arrgh, I don’t give a damn… I just want to play it…

Please tell me that I’m not completely shut out just by being a beef-eating western devil. Tell me that I can at least download the client and play it on Japanese servers regardless.

I was able to sign up and play for JP PSU with no problems whatsoever, so take that as a sign that Sega really doesn’t mind too much.

Hell, people there (the ones that spoke english) were actually really nice and helpful, which is a first for anything where I’ve tried to delve into the JP communities.

I’m going to assume that onboard means that I’m using what my laptop came with then yes. It looks like I overestimated my laptops specs. Here’s a pic of my benchmark. You can see the specs of my laptop there as well.

Can I simply up any of my laptop’s specs or am I better off getting a newer laptop, which I have been considering for a while now actually.

However, if I up the HD graphics while setting the shaders to simple, my score jumps to 7200, which is not bad, but as a result the game’s environment looks a bit too simple for my taste

Upgrading a laptop is, usually, pretty difficult. Probably better off getting a new one or building a desktop.

Onboard graphics means your computer doesn’t have an actual dedicated video processor, and is just sharing resources from your CPU, I think. So, it’s much less capable of running graphically intensive games.

Generally the only things you can upgrade on a laptop are the RAM and the hard drive so yeah, buying a new machine is probably the better option.

When I say onboard, I mean that some Intel CPUs have the ability to display stuff without needing a video card (also known as the “GPU” as it’s listed there). This is usually called “integrated” or “onboard” graphics, and is usually low in performance and undesirable if you want to do something like play a game.

Now, you have a video card, it’s that “NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M” you see listed there, which unfortunately isn’t exactly new or even very powerful. The bad news is, it’s very difficult if not impossible to upgrade a laptop the same way you upgrade a desktop.

Laptops and games generally don’t mix too well. I hate to break it to you, but there’s no such thing as a cheap gaming laptop, so I hope you’ve saved up a lot of cash. If you want a laptop with great performance it’s gonna run you $800 minimum. Sorry man.

Thanks for the replies guys, but I think at this point, and especially with the economy in the state as it is, I’m content with running the game with simple shaders, it’s not like it looks like complete shit anyway. It also gives it that classic PSO1 feel.

Wow, changing shaders really does have a big effect on performance. Game looks about the same to me either way, but maybe I just wasn’t paying close enough attention.

results: 5/5 quality setting + high resolution for textures

A difference of ~22fps average vs ~70fps .

Ivy Bridge architecture is coming out soon. I might just build a gaming desktop.

Hats sort of suck in this game, so I just slapped a cowboy hat on these 2.
edit: anyone know how to embed pictures correctly? I always have them broken but you can click on them to see the image.

If you’re using photobucket, you can just go to the image’s page and click the “IMG Code” line. It should copy automatically. If not, copy/paste like regular.

Took a shot at creating Alys from PS4. Didn’t have an image to use as a reference, tried to do it from memory- ended up a bit too feminine and the costumes were all too whorish or not quite whorish enough. Maybe there will be more options in the final version of the game.

Thanks a lot. I noticed, funny enough, that some character designs effect performance. The girl I made me lose about 50 performance points probably because of her long hair compared to the default guy .

I’ve heard about that. Sounds interesting but will that really be as good as most video cards?

As far as I know, the 3D transistors allow power scaling which reduces the power the CPU needs and GPU capabilities are up 30 to 50% still require a dedicated GPU unit.

Honestly, I don’t really know if I want to drop the cash. I might just settle playing my 3DS. PSO2 doesn’t really feel different enough than PSO. I would definitely buy this game if tactics were to matter i.e. outmaneuvering your opponent, outflanking someone, party formation, and etc…

Ah, difference between normal/complex shaders is very big when it comes to character models; I’d initially tested the difference during the benchmark, and it was hard to tell because all of the characters were in constant motion. But messing around with the character editor, it becomes easy to tell the difference, especially when it comes to hair, reflections etc.

On a different note, anyone else notice input delay when using the advanced shader? My mouse cursor moved noticeably slower in the game window when it was on, as compared to normally during windows/when it was off. Not sure if it’s just a processing thing or what…

That happened to me too, I thought my mouse was dirty. What a pain.

They’ve got some optimizing to do.

Does this mean I get to participate in the Beta?
