I wouldn’t buy Tekken Tag 2 because IMO it’s not a good investment. Street Fighter historically has always done well in arcades and has a following in arcades. The Tekken franchise has always been very trendy. Tekken players really don’t stay in the arcades. Once the game goes on console they just play on console. Also unlike old SF games old Tekken games don’t age well. Once the new one comes out they stop playing the old ones. The Street Fighters have strong legs. People still play ST and 3S today.
On top of all of this I don’t think you can import TT2 to the US because I heard the TT2 machine needs the Internet in Japan to work. So if you had the machine here it wouldn’t work properly. I don’t know if this is entirely true but it’s what I hear. It has to do with new technology for new arcade machines in Japan.
Not to derail the subject you guys have at hand, but is anyone here knowledge savvy of PC Tablets? Actually really interested getting one in the next few months, ideally around the black friday rush, so I’m just looking for input.
So what do you think as a member of the SF4 generation? You think the old school games will continue to last? If Third Strike lasts forever I’ll be fine with that lol.
PC Tablet, as in a tablet that you draw on? Or a pad like iPad, Samsung Galaxy Pad, etc.
As a member of the “SF4 Generation” it’s hard to say. I had a bit of a leeway into these other games because I was interested in them as they were being released in the home market. I had SFII Turbo on SNES, I bought Alpha 2 & SFII Collection on PS1, I bought MvC2 and Street Fighter Anniversary Collection on PS2, I bought CvS2 on Gamecube (lol Gamecube) and I am buying these games again on Xbox. (Third Strike, MvC2, HD Remix).
Really it was just SF4 that gave me that little extra push into getting more acquainted with where these games started. Little did I know that I would get bored of SF4 and go on playing the games that I had most fun in: PS2/Gamecube era. Which explains why I like Third Strike and CvS2 so much. I think if re-releases like Third Strike and updates like HD Remix will keep people coming back to these games. Without a HD Remix, I probably wouldn’t even give Super Turbo a try since it looks very difficult.
And of course, I can’t forget about my first love: Guilty Gear. <3 I found that game more interesting than these Capcom fighters. Maybe I am just an anime fag
And you know what, the old games will always continue to last and be around. You know what games that are that old that have stood the test of time? SF2, Donkey Kong, Pac Man. All of which are still used for money matches. And let’s not forget about Hungry Hungry Hippos.
In all seriousness though, if you look at what’s been happening since 3SOE has been released, even with it’s buggy nature as it is, there’s a solid up rising in the idea of how bad SF4 is compared to 3S. I’m not saying that I think that, but I have been reading things here and there in the few forums I do read up on, and I’m getting the same feeling. The new generation just needs that push, whatever it may be if it’s eye candy in a remake or having it shoved down their faces with an iron fist, to get around to playing the older generation of games that paved the way for today and are still competitive today.
Don, you’re a 3S lover. If I remember correctly from a conversation I had with JR, the 3S crew at FFA or Denjin were getting into SF2 for a bit. I think that can bridge my statement above, albeit weakly maybe, to this SF4 stay-in-doors generation.
I think they are a waste of money at current MSRP price IMO. But just for the sake of compatibility, just go with the OS that you are most comfortable with. I would go for iPad myself ONLY because a) I don’t have an iPhone/iPod Touch and 2) I have an Android phone already. Problem I have is the price isn’t justified. I get a lot more use out of a simple small netbook for around 200 bucks than a pad for 500 bucks.
I will be attending on friday, Jint! pare did u wanna fill me in on who’s goin? i think i should be able to confirm by tomorrow to see how long my boss is gonna be out of town but i def will be down to go to SD.
Guilty Gear is a great series. It’s just really weird. Capcom (MVC and SF2) has characters that appeal to the mainstream in America. But Vampire Savior characters and Third Strike characters can be odd as well. Maybe Guilty Gear, Vampire Savior, and 3S is too “Japanese” for a lot of Americans to get into. I don’t know. If you look at the original 8 World Warriors they’re very easy for American audiences to relate to. You have two karate guys, the army guy, the sexy chinese girl with thunder thighs, the monster, the russian wrestler, the sumo, and the indian guy with long limbs.
I like your optimistic point of view when it comes to the old school games and I agree with it. Capcom and SNK made great fighting games from 1990-2002 that continue to stand the test of time. The way I see it having an arcade with all these great games is like having a catalog of good music. People will always listen to the music and after twenty years of Street Fighter people will always appreciate the great fighting games of the past. As long as the games are in one place I think it will be a pretty good spot to visit.
Hungry hungry hippos is awesome.
I never know who comes over on Fridays. It’s totally random. Every Friday my faith is in the community who ever shows up. I’ve been very lucky though because almost every Friday since I started this I’ve average at least 15-20 people per night. Which is really good.
I was checking them out some more on my free time over the last few days, and just out of what I’ve seen so far they just seem really much more like over glorified toys than anything. I’m a huge, huge, huge fan of anything that is new in technology ( Excluding 3D TVs, I think this is a dumb idea ) but these tablets for their price is just really… meh. I see some for 300 at Best Buy and that’s something I would pay for it at most, but even then, it better have a compatible version of Windows, and one that is actually responsive and not any where a bit behind with the touch technology. I think I may just get back my old laptop, crack it open, and fix the few things that’s wrong with it, like the broken speakers.
Interesting read. I think SSF4 AE v2012 will be a well balanced game. It’s Capcom’s tradition to have a perfect game and then mess it up and then perfect it again with an apology game.
Here’s the same mistakes in history Capcom made in the past with SF:
Perfect Game Hyped>Up But A Disaster When It Came Out>Finally Perfect Apology Game:
Hyper Fighting>Super Street Fighter II: New Challengers>Super Turbo
Super Street Fighter 4>Arcade Edition>Arcade Edition 2012
Alpha 2>Alpha 3>Alpha 3 Upper
My last theory on the Alpha Series is up for debate since no one really played Alpha 3 upper where V-ISM got nerfed pretty hard.
Interesting that Ryu can’t FADC fierce dragon no more, hence making it more a pro game. It’s like making the transition in Hyper Fighting to Super Turbo with Guile. In Hyper Fighting Guile was easy to use because all the punch and kicks mainly had the same animation with different strengths. In Super Turbo every punch and kick was specific so you had to know what button did what to play him effectively. In Hyper Fighting you really only needed two to four buttons with Guile. In HF you didn’t really need jab or short. In Super Turbo you need to use all the buttons. It’s more tricky and harder to use.
There’s a few reasons why MvC and SF2 took off like they did here versus all of the other games that have come out over the decades. The main argument with SF2 is that it was the first REAL competitive game, during a time where the arcades were still fairly popular in the late 80’s. More people went to the arcades back then, which contributed to more people being exposed to the game (not to mention the many ports and updates like Hyper and Super Turbo). Inversely, however, many people came to realize through the course of playing some of these fighting games that once you fought someone else who was better than you, odds are, you would lose your money. Mortal Kombat was inclined to the same pedigree (at first). Things like this deterred people from seeing the more “creative” fighters later down the line like KOF or JoJo, despite their Japanese orientation.
With Marvel – like we’ve talked about in some form – it’s a very American game. From COTA on up to Marvel vs. Capcom 2, here you had a game with Marvel characters – characters people knew – and fighting game mechanics that focused less so on finesse and more on crazy, addictive combos. Darkstalkers may have created the infrastructure for COTA since it created target combos, homing attacks, triangle jumping, ex moves, and OTGs, but again, the execution requirements for COTA on up were always low, with Darkstalkers (especially that steroid induced Vampire Savior, Lord knows) having extremely fast gameplay, requiring heavier amounts of education to pull off effective moves – something you couldn’t do unless you knew someone who was hardcore about the game. You can also blame the visual appeal of Darkstalkers for it’s more eccentric character designs since at that point, only the hardcore arcade goers were messing with it…which really didn’t fly by them, per se.
You can really break down why Marvel and SF2 were successful in the states by pointing out their models for fun: simplicity. The average American isn’t us (especially me with my 3s Ibuki-playing butt), and doesn’t look at the estranged with optimism like a kid looking into a candy shop. Most don’t want to learn, and get bored after the first 10 minutes, negating the value of many of the games we love now like Third Strike and CvS2. I would know this because I’m a professional game designer, and unless something is nostalgic, you have to keep things within a certain realm of comfort. Retrogression and obtuse design decisions are also to blame for other game characters/fighters not catching on despite depth, but that’s a topic for another day. =P
The only things wrong are that the speakers are disconnected somewhere in the wiring, and the CD/DVD combo drive is being stupid with reading discs. Just a few things I can fix up, but not sure if I really want to buy a new one.
I agree with you. But I even think that SF2 became more of a “Japanese Game”, well at least skill wise, when it became Super Turbo. SF2 was a simple game from World Warrior to Super but when ST came along the fighting game system got more complicated with Supers, Tech Throws, and Juggles. Shoryukens were also no longer invincible and Ken was changed drastically so the simple classical way of playing SF2 was being “corrupted” or turning “more Japanese”. Hyper Fighting was a very American game in the way it was simple and how the whole cast was easily playable and quite effective. You didn’t need to do a lot of things to win. From Blankas no recovery balls to Zangief’s invincible Turbo Lariet to Bison’s Psycho Crusher, the whole cast was simple and easy to use. The New Challengers I.e. Cammy, Fei, Dee Jay, and Hawk were a little more complicated but IMO ineffective in Super. They all got better in ST mainly because of the return of the Turbo speed. But of course in 2008 we found out Original T. Hawk was probably the best character in the whole game now lol. As for the Marvel games, I heard they have a reputation in Japan of being “kids games”. And maybe this is true to a certain extend because a Marvel game, unlike Third Strike, had to be mainstream simple to attract a lot of people. But to American players credit they found the depth in Marvel and created a new style of play for fighting games. The hectic speed combo crazy game.

Truth be known, I’m a little sick of Ibuki because of how horrific her bad match ups tend to be. I play her well, and yeah, I’m glad she’s respected, but I’m hitting walls with her that I just can’t make sense of right now. This has nothing to do with my execution or my overall mix up game – I do things with Ibuki most people can’t do on reaction. However, at this point now, I can play as any character at a decent competitive level, so I may look into a new main to take to the next level gasp, until…I don’t know…until she and I can get along better, again. =/
I may go for Urien, Hugo, or Chun since their normals are extremely good and, of course, they have damage. Yeah, they’re slow, but I’m a footsies player; spacing and understanding momentum are things that make up most of my fundamentals. =P
Thank you everyone for showing up on Friday night and making it an event. We had about 15 people join us. Thank you Lee, David, Kainzero, Resres, ALAX, Kara Fail, John, Galzpanic, Erosentinel, Strider, Lavell, The Absolute, Matt, Courtney, and Mr.12.
Thank you everyone for joining.
Well if you didn’t see on last Friday night I got a new showcase cabinet for $75 from Regency Arcade in Lakewood/Long Beach. I put Alpha 2 in it. So now we have Alpha 2. Even though I like Alpha 3 better, Alpha 2 is a really pretty game. I think the art in Alpha 2 is better than Alpha 3.
