Don's Arcade aka Astro City: Torrance/Carson Fridays 8pm-3am

It’s been about a year or so, so it’s possible they leveled up their game. There wasn’t much character variety at the game, but it seems like a bunch of players there are picking up different characters and stepping it up. The players there seem more focused on cool combos than solid strategies, and I think that gets them in trouble playing in heavy tournaments, whenever they do decide to travel.

The few notable players I’ve played against were Jorge and EddieC. They seem the most capable out of the bunch.

It was Jorge I think that was streaking with Ryu.

Oh another Round 1 in Lakewood is moving closer to our neck of the woods this Saturday. I wonder if that will impact the FGC in our area. They’re probably gonna be the first to get Ultra SF4 that is if they have an arcade version of Ultra SF4 which they should.

I’ll have to check out the Round 1. I had heard about this for a long time, but ever since I got hooked by the ST bug, nothing else really entices me. Still, they might have some pretty unique and interesting games like they do in the Industry location, so I’ll have to drop by and check it out.

Oh word? That will be fucking awesome.

Regency Fun Center is not too far from Lakewood, I wonder how the two arcades will clash. Regency is strictly a MvC2 scene these days, but even then it is dying down.

Regency is dead. I went there a couple of weeks ago and saw its nothing like it once was. Same thing with Camelot in Anaheim. All the old stomping grounds are dead. FFA is closed. The Big Three today are Super, Japan, and Alex’s. You can include James Games but its too far for me to know what it’s like.

I never been to Japan lately. I only went there twice in the middle of the day when I was in downtown LA. But I hear good things about Japan. I heard the best 3S players go there and they have a really deep Melty Blood following.

Regency has a few die-hard MVC2 players, but they’re few and far between, and they don’t really get organized to make a big splash in the MVC2 scene, despite the fact that that area, along with Alex’s Arcade, has some pretty strong players. Lack of organization is what’s holding them back.

James Games is a pretty good arcade with a LOT of space, a lot of good arcade cabs, and they’re all in decent condition. The only issue is that it’s pretty far from heavy urban areas, which is why it doesn’t get frequent traffic. Mando did a good job holding bi-weekly sessions over there for awhile, but tourney entrants has always been low there.

The big three (and last 3) is Super, Japan, and Alex’s. Japan has got that heavy 3s scene on lockdown, Super has all the top-level talent for SF4 and UMVC3, and Alex’s has a lot of talent, but nobody there to hold events, and it’s a difficult arcade to travel to for a majority of players. Alex’s is in that weird zone between LA and OC, and anybody living in either county has to drive at least 30 minutes to get there.

I would rather drive 30 minutes to Alex’s Arcade than the hour that it takes to get to Super

I will probably be supporting Round 1. Japan Arcade gets the most visitations from me though.

I should check out Japan more on the lively nights. For me I like the west side better. I feel more comfortable and like the ppl on the west side. That’s why I liked going to FFA the most before. The UMVC3 Lakewood/Long Beach tournament was awesome and I don’t even play UMVC3. But maybe it’s because I know more people on the West Side.

Thing is, Japan Arcade tends to be most active on Friday nights. At least from the times that I been there.

Occasionally I roll up with JC Exclusive and Forti. They seem to know JR Rodriguez really well, he works at Japan Arcade lol

Ya I know that Japan is lively on Fridays lol. I should’ve gone on my break but I was too busy. But maybe I’ll cheat while my gathering is going on and stop by there for a bit lol.

Tomorrow we shall have a gathering from 8pm-3am. $5 entry fee per person. Anyone and everyone is invited. The more the merrier. Anyone new who wishes to join us please text me at 310 344 9367. Hope to see you tomorrow:)

Tonight we shall have a gathering NEW HOURS from 8pm-3am. Anyone and everyone is invited. The more the merrier. I’ll be going around to ask for the $5 E Fee so please have it ready when I ask. Anyone new who wishes to join us please text me at 310 344 9367.

Yo!

Good games to everyone. I need to shake off the rust. I suck lol

I see a few people in here mentioning the new Round One Arcade in Lakewood that opened 8/3/2013. I just received word that it has AE cabinets and TTT2 cabinets. Hopefully someone with more details about the arcade can create a thread about this new spot. It’s too far of a drive for me, but it would be nice to see the Long Beach/Lakewood scene pick up.

Don actually went there recently to check it out. Round1 is a nice place to go, but at $1/play, it can get pretty expensive.

I was at Round One Arcade in Lakewood last night too. Cool spot, but I agree about the prices. $1 a game is a bit too much…

Was fun though. Apologies to the Ryu player that I kept idling against. Right before the match, I freaked out because I thought I’d lost my game card and was also confused because the CPU had Ryu selected too in Arcade mode, so by the time our match started, I thought I was still playing the CPU. If you’re reading this, I owe you a free game lol.

Setup wise Round 1 is awesome. Price wise it’s pretty steep. BUT that’s the way it is in Japan. It’s like a $1 a game in Japan so they can run the arcade business and make a decent profit.

In reality pay for play style is a hard sell in the US. Ppl don’t even want to pay a quarter anymore. I thought the return of SF with SF4 in 2009 would bring back that arcade mentality of pay to play but in all honesty it didn’t. SF4 and UMVC3 actually put the final nail in the coffin (or very close to it) to the So Cal Arcade scene. It was fine for seven years when it was underground 3S and MVC2 scene but once the new games hit, it just consolized the community.

Arcade games like these should be 50 cents at the most.

Pretty much every person who plays Street Fighter 4 competitively actually owns a copy (or two) at home.

Pricing it at such a high cost is asburd. The game is old. Are the older fighting games also $1?

I only played AE but it does say $1 on the old games.

Wooooooooooow

Well were the buttons good at least? What about the monitor? Was there lag?
