Don's Arcade aka Astro City: Torrance/Carson Fridays 8pm-3am

I teamed up with UltraDavid and MikeZ for Team UltraCheZ. I originally wanted Team Jew (myself being 16th Jewish) but it was vetoed by Mike.

You looked very popular so I left you alone with some big wigs over there. Even some girl was like: Is that UltraDavid? I haven’t seen him since Denjin! Lady… Sanchez is right there too! Pimp shirt tho dude. Fitting of a man billed as Alex “Sanchez” Sanchez by Wiz on the news article - that’s double the Sanchez!

[S]A real shame[/S](it reads off wrong that way)
It sucks that you and 5Star didn’t get to be broadcast to the world there, while the chat gets filled with that silly Gootecks emoticon.

Thanks guys. I didn’t know what Grant wrote down either or what anyone said just the same. I’ll put that list up later for 5Star so people can find out where their teams were in the bracket pools and names, respectively. I thought Grant inked us in as “Mongolia” when I saw that on the sign ups which would’ve been cool, while “Team Name” was pretty meta. Stupid new avatar, I should go back to the hamburger helper…

Oh yeah, I figured since it was for charity that I didn’t need the money back. Yeah, people kept asking me if I was disappointed, I was more disappointed I got in so late Friday and was so dead tired, if there was a rainy night of “FFA Generals” the calm before the storm of the 3 ring circus Saturday, that would’ve been where to be and I couldn’t get there *. And just being around the 3s scene, sorry if that’s the only people I saw there and that’s mostly what I know, you get your 3s lessons in different ways. Played a bunch with Dander, the bastard did “Aruka Blocking” on me. The walk up nonstop & parry the first low that comes out.

  • 5Star told a cool Sanchez story at the last one I made it out to. In no uncertain terms, somehow Sanchez Good, Renic not so good. I think it was referring to playing other characters. Game knowledge, why people are picking Alex. So good thing Dander got out of the Alex game. Its a 4 way leap frog there to who’s the last Alex standing… strong.

“Silly chop thing” also said to be no good, vs a certain gameplan. Man, but yeah towards Strong has uses and Renic has a cemented legacy as told to me by both Dander, Duralath. I’ll shutup now going so far with this on a Sanchez namedrop.

Thank you. You’re too kind.

*This is actually kind of shocking to me. Could I ask you to elaborate further?

Even if I can’t tell a story well in person, if might be better to tell it in person to you.

Since I don’t want to step out of my bounds to say this top player said this, when it should’ve stayed then and there. Don’t know where he was at with bullshitting or in RL trolling, since I’ve never been around him enough to gauge it.

Sanchez you’re 1/16th Chosen? Cool. No wonder the Midrash of playing fighting games comes to you so easy.

Being Jewish is the new Japanese in the FGC? I thought it was Korean, but clearly I’m mistaken.

Yes, but if you want to play KoF competitively then you must be Mexican.

I’ll be there along with Mr.12 if he’s down to go.

Tomorrow we shall have a gathering. Ya I know FFA is gonna have a 3S event tomorrow as well and people who play 3S here should go. But since it’s my last days here (And maybe the last day for everyone lol), I’m just gonna ride it out with the Christmas lights lol.

I read this article on eventhubs which stated how Watson had to pull out VF5 because there was no more people:

It’s sad how games get dropped off because of the lack of following especially to a great game like VF. All that effort and hardwork by Watson and LA Akira and then players don’t show up is tragic. Not to mention money being thrown out to “bribe” new players to commit. As for myself, that’s why I always put my faith in Capcom/Street Fighter. Even though Capcom Fighting games are even capable of being dropped, I stick with them and hesitate to add new games because for the most part they are the most “digestible” fighting games for the FGC. Honestly the player base when it comes to hardcore players is small and its hard to create new players so trying to steer a majority Marvel/SF FGC to try newer games is difficult. Ya there are great games made by other companies but for some reason, Capcom fighting games always had the strongest legs and it even resurrected the FG scene not to mention kept it alive, albeit underground, in the ten year gap between Alpha 3 and SF4 with 3S and MVC2 even CVS2 in some places. Not saying all Capcom fighting games are great (See SFxT and what the hell are they doing rereleasing Capcom Fighting Jam) but they will always be the foundation and roots of the FGC. And also luckily they just appeal to my taste. I find other game companies fighting games too weird and awkward but that’s just me. So I ride and die with Capcom. It’s just too weird for me to commit to anything else.

I’ve been telling people this for MONTHS now both offline and on the forums. People always want to talk about how good a game is, or how there needs to be more tournaments for Game A, blah blah blah. But it’s all just bullshit and talk unless these forum trolls actually support the game, by attending offline sessions and tournaments.

You vote with your money and effort, not with your words.

People just don’t seem to get that. It’s not enough to just talk about a game and why it’s good or why it’s bad. Simply show up to offline events and PROVE that games are worth playing. Tournaments don’t just happen, people put a lot of work, time, and money, to make tournaments happen. So if someone does hold a tournament, you better show up and reward the TO for their effort, otherwise they’re not going to do it again. People aren’t going to hold tournaments for dead games, so when they do show up, you better do your best to support the community.

This is largely why I stick with ST. Sure, it’s not the most popular game in comparison, but it has definite staying power, the game is fantastic, and the community members are far more supportive and engaging than anyone else.

I believe that inorder for the arcade scene now to survive that the average street fighter players in the fgc each have to dedicate themselves to four games: ST, 3S, CVS2, and SF4. They all have the same fundamentals so it won’t be that difficult. It will be a simple and rich experience at the same time. Both ancient/classic and contemporary.

MVC3 players will be fine all by themselves. They’re community is so strong that they can take care of themselves. And it’s console based.

So if the average So Cal FGC street fighter player adopted this four game philosophy, then the remaining arcades would be fine and last for a while.

True, but that’s not going to happen. People just need to realize that in order to keep arcades from dying, they have to show up and spend money. SF4 still has a pretty large scene, but most people prefer to play online nowadays instead of going to the arcade. If we could get regular socal players to show up to the arcades besides WNF, Super Arcade could last forever. But instead, people want to cry and lament the demise of arcades, while sitting on their ass at home.

It must happen.

I blame the economy. Why? Because it makes sense. No job having kids, no money, no going to Arcades or major tournaments. That’s one I can allow as far as people complaining. I’d go if I had money, but I don’t, so I stick to my 15 bucks a month, give or take on World of Warcraft, and the occasional League of Legends or whatever new game buy every few months. I just don’t by it when people don’t go to an arcade to support a scene when they have time and money. However, you can only find those people if you start talking to everyone.

No, really. You can tell who are the people that are willing, and who aren’t just by having a night’s worth of a conversation. I would go to the last hurrah’s here, Don, but this retarded timing on house construction my family has is leaving me completely destroyed. All the dust, no roof, cold air and incoming rain is about to leave my completely face first down in my grave it feels like.

No worries about not being able to attend. I don’t really want to make a big deal about the “last hurrah” anyway since I’m not really an arcade. I’m just glad we had a lot of fun while we did. We had a great run. A lot of the first gen people like you left, not because they played somewhere else, but because life made them do something else. When we first started we were ultra popular because of SF4 renassance. Back then people HAD to come here and play. Everyone was addicted. Whether they were married, had kids, had jobs, had school, they’d take time off their busy schedule just to play here. A lot of the old guard just had to leave. Some moved to Austrailia, some moved to San Francisco, some went to San Diego, some got a career job that took all their time, some got married, some got kids, some went to law school, some went to med school, some just refocused and decided that they needed to do more grown up things. I’m actually happy for everyone who had to leave to do other stuff because as fun as this is, we’re not suppose to do this forever.

A lot of those who left are the reason why the scene is dying. There’s no new blood that was as committed that was as big as the first gen group. So to steal from Ralph’s video I just provided the room and you guys gave it life. I’ll still hang around for a while and see if I could do this in the other house but eventually I’ll have to leave the game also. But for now I’m still ticking.

I mean, I totally understand if you’re low on money and can’t make it to the arcade. That’s fine. But I know for a fact a lot of people aren’t in these types of dire straights. They rather spend their money going out to eat, drink, watch movies, buy shit, etc etc. For sure top players have the money to these types of things, especially if they’re sponsored, and they definitely don’t show up to the arcades on the regular.

And I know from a fact that Watson is busting his ass trying to fill up every day of the week at Super Arcade with SOME sort of event to be able to draw players in, have tournaments, sessions, and raise money.

I honestly think its not about money. If there’s a movie, concert, or some other event that they want to go to they’ll find a way to pay and a way to get there. It’s what you value. People don’t value the fighting game event like they once did two-four years ago so it’s not as important as let’s say watching The Hobbit on premire night. It’s not a quasi religious experience anymore. Lets be honest as well VF5 doesn’t have the mass appeal that SF4 and MVC3 have. I’ve always felt that the other non Capcom fighting games that came out after 2009 were just piggybacking off of SF4 so the staying power isn’t there.

Also the value mentality for arcade play is fading with the online play. Why pay for it when I could get it at home for free. Unless the hooker is super duper duper hot and you have the cash, fucking your wife is much cheaper.

Oh I went to Frank & Sons in City of Industry to look around: It’s a marketplace for collectors aka comics, toys, video games, etc. (They sell some arcade machines there too) I saw The Magic The Gathering section and there was both a lot of selling and playing. Now this is a game who’s fans love to spend money and love to play at the same time. The trash cans were filled with card wrappers so it goes to show that a lot of money was being spent and they had table setups where they were playing each other. Now that’s the mentality I like: Pay to play. Of course that’s not gonna happen with the new fighting games since its all console based. Like I said before if MVC3 had a coin op, arcades here would still be packed. I wish the new MVC3 players had a machine. Maybe some of those MVC3 players with big egos wouldn’t be out of control. The machine has a way of humbling you.

Anyway we need to start a “four game legacy movement” in the So Cal FGC so that the remaining arcades Alex and Super can get more consistent showings. If we get the majority of So Cal SF players all playing ST, 3S, CVS2, and SF4 then that would be a good foundation.

I’m actually seeing the value in CVS2. Surprisingly above moderate to high level aka passionate CVS2 players have been showing up to my place for the past two weeks. I’m starting to see what a gem this game is. Not just a gameplay perspective but from a game design perspective as well. It preserves the SNK roster. A group of rich well thought out characters created by SNK that will live forever because they were in a Capcom game with six buttons.

It’d be cool to get into CVS2 and Alpha2 or 3. Those seem like really fun games, and I wish there was more competition for those games. CVS2 looks fun, but at a high-level, it look REALLY defensive and boring, and hardly anyone takes risks. Anchor matches are all down to basic pokes and shit.

Alpha2 is more similar to fundamentals that you’d find in ST, and it looks to be an extremely good game, asides from the whole Valle CC thing. Alpha3 seems much more offensive and free flowing, especially in regard to custom combo, and I guess it’s the more 3s-ish type of game that favors playing your opponent rather than playing the matchup.
