Don's Arcade aka Astro City: Torrance/Carson Fridays 8pm-3am

You kind of have to be pretentious about this kind of stuff once you actually know better. It’s the only way you’ll be able to fight a crowd of idiots who think SF4 is the crowning glory and achievement of the FGC, and before SF4, that it was basically one shitty fighting game after another.

No, I’m serious. Some kids actually believe this idiocy.

Kinda of in relation to what you’re talking about: Is it just me or did some of these newer players ala SF4 or UMVC3 spike up the “douche level” to unprecedented levels? I mean a lot of them who got good started to develop egos that are out of control. A lot of them believe their own myth. You sit down and try to have a conversation with these guys and they are like the biggest asses. I want to say dude you play a fucking video game take it easy. I know not everyone can’t be graceful and humble like Daigo but a little humanity would be nice. The way I see it a lot of these guys were a bunch of nerds who got picked on in high school and now beating everyone at these new games is there way of terrorizing the world and showing their dominance. I don’t know about the new generation. Usually it was the douches who were douches. Now small petite nerdy looking guys with glasses who are really angry can be the biggest douches.

Some of them need to take a little time away from their game and start learning life skills.

Online culture imo. Bunch of kids who act like they are hot shit and once they play locally that arrogance follows them.

The SoCal arcade culture wasn’t always the nicest bunch though. The Marvel scene at Regency man; that shit was rough.

Regency ya was retarded at times but it’s not even that. For me it was just the heat of the battle.

I’m talking about seeing someone you know in the FGC and then you approach them and they get all assholey. You thought you were friends and then they get all defensive and talk to you in a fucked up tone. I know fucking two pieces of shit who have been coming to my house before and then when I see them at Super or some place they act like they want to pick a fight. Fair weather faggets. I don’t know. There’s a lot of trash out there in the FGC. I’m fortunate that most of the people who come to my place are cool but just know there’s a lot of jerks out there in the FGC who will stab you in the back.

It’s simple. A lot of these newer kids grew up in the age of the internet. The internet is a place where you can act like a retarded child and not reap the consequences of it. Thus, they extend this attitude towards the rest of their life.

I blame Marvel tbh. The Marvel community has always been rather brash and rough around the edges, even in comparison to the SF guys. I kinda like that to be honest, but a lot of people take it to an extreme level. You don’t need to talk mad shit to people just to get them motivated to train. But I guess for some guys, talking shit and running MMs is a way of life in the Marvel community.

Hell, have you SEEN any youtube videos with Dark Prince? This dude is the epitome of a guy who tries to act like a thug playing video games. It’s kind of become the cool thing to do in Marvel to act like you’re a gangster. I don’t get it myself, but what do I know, I’m from the ST crowd, comparatively we’re like the Golf or Baseball of video game sports, lol.

I don’t even necessarily mind the shit talk. Hell, that’s half the fun of it. But there is a certain limit where it goes beyond just messing around and trying to build up your own confidence and get other people salty, and it starts to go into you just being really obnoxious and acting like a jerk for no good reason.

Even though it’s annoying it is the nature of the beast and you really can’t do anything but keep your guard up.

There was one time at Regency where I lost it. I was schooling this guy with Q at 3S and there was nothing he could do. It was some skinny nerdy guy who was obviously frustrated. He was “mad” playing. Just popping in quarters in the machine. So after the 15th win in a row he started talking shit and I ignored him and kept beating him. So after the 20th win, I just left because he did started to piss me off. So as I walk out, bitch guy starts following me in the parking lot telling me to go back in and play him. So I just walked away then guy yells out at me “Pussy”. So I walked up to him and he said “What you gonna do bitch?”. So I just smacked him real hard on the temple and his knees buckled. Smack was so hard you could hear it echo in the parking lot. So when his knees buckle he was defenseless and dazed and I could’ve literally done some serious damage but I let it go and left. I didn’t feel bad because guy had it coming. When I went back to Regency guys there who saw it were laughing and one guy told me someone got it on his webcam lol.

I don’t like to fight people because there’s other ways to settle disputes but if any of these little shit new gen fighting game nerds piss me off enough I will clock them in the face to show them a lesson. Some guys gotta learn the hard way sometimes.

I don’t like the philosophy of today’s fighting game community where extreme shit talking is ok but reacting with a punch is taking it too far. I don’t get it. If you talk enough shit someone’s gonna get hit.

Don is straight hood yo

You mentioning this story brings up memories of a Q player that was beasting pretty hard. It was me and two other friends playing and we were just losing every time. I remember being super impressed by it all; like a kid seeing Star Wars for the very first time. I think between the three of us, dude racked up close to 50 wins in a row. If I remember correctly, I was picking Hugo, and my homies picked Dudley and Ibuki. Maybe that was you Don :coffee:

No no no. Fighting is not good. That was just one time when the guy was trying really really hard to be an obnoxious asshole. He never came back again lol.

That was probably me. I don’t know anyone else there who went to Regency back in the day and used Q and went on long winning streaks. I had a lot of winning streaks at Regency and you know what? I got a lot of free soda too lol. Because before they got that damn soda machine at Regency if you got 20 wins in a row you’d get a free soda. That’s where I got the idea from lol.

All I remember was good times from Regency. Well of course beside that one incident. From my experience everyone was nice or decent. Really fun times there. I went there a couple of weeks ago because I was at Lakewood Mall and the place now is dead like a zombie. There’s no more quarter system. It’s like a Dave and Busters card system. Kinda sad. This use to be my stomping grounds and now like all waves it crashed. Regency was an exciting place when it was MVC2 and 3S. Everyday of the week at night there would always be a group play both MVC2 and 3S.

Surprisingly though Regency has a real arcade AE (Not 2012) but it’s in a funky cab. But I think people don’t play as much now because one reason is the card system. People need to drop quarters.

Now’s your chance, Suga! Train hard to defeat Don, the man who took your 3s virginity with his amazing Q play! He has revealed himself to you like Darth Vader speaking down to Luke! FUCK 'EM UP, BRO…or get me to do it – I’ll do it. Can I do it?

They moved to the card system because it was easier to handle their money that way. Last time I went the games were still 25 cents. AE was a buck to play I think, that shit is too much.

I don’t do too bad against Don, I wouldn’t mind having a FT5/10 with him though. How about it Don? Loser has to buy the other guy lunch

“Challenge Accepted”. Lol

I love the Q vs Hugo matchup:p

But talking about new dimensions the last dimension in SF that I want to explore is canceling supers at will in ST. If I could cancel supers in ST like I can in Alpha it be great. For years I got away with it but now it’s catching up to me lol.

Damn, the cholo in Don is coming out now. LOL.

I kind of enjoy being the “king of the machine” so to speak. I really enjoy that feeling you get when somebody just dumps MAD money trying to beat you, and they just can’t do it. It makes for a pretty cheap and enjoyable day at the arcades. Some people just can’t handle losing. They find it hard to just take the beating like a man, step up, think about why you lost, figure out a way to get past it, and move on with life. It’s that killer mentality and fortitude that’s really lost on this new generation of kids whose first response to a problem is to bitch and whine about it and hope Capcom patches all of their problems away.

But then again, playing Q has a tendency to just piss people off. It’s like the ultimate form of sandbagging. Just look at the way Kuroda plays Q, lol. I love watching that match between him and Jwong at SBO. He just plays like an asshole and gets away with it.

You just gotta practice it. Believe me, I didn’t really understand how to do it at first either, until I learned that you have to cancel the super pretty quickly and very earlier than you would in 3s. It’s almost like you have to kara-cancel the cr.fwd into the super, or plink it. But it’s not like you absolutely HAVE to learn how to cancel into supers, like you would in newer games. You can literally just ignore the super, and you can reach a fairly high level of play. Look at Damdai, he uses old characters too, and doesn’t even need the super, you can do the same if you’d like. I used N.Ryu for the longest time, and I landed the super quite a bit against people without bothering to cancel it. You just use it to punish bad pokes, fireballs, or even use it as a “frame trap”. An easy way to land it against a jumping opponent is to to do j.strong, land 3 hits of those, and then juggle with the super for a TON of damage for very little effort.

Great channel for ST execution tutorials. It’s a great video reference for the timing of super cancels.

Cool thanks. I think I saw this before a long time ago. For me it’s difficult lol.

Tonight we shall have a gathering. Anyone and everyone is invited. The more the merrier. I’ll be going around to collect the E fee so please have it ready when I ask. Anyone new who wishes to join us please text me at 310 344 9367.

Hope to see y’all tonight.

Thank you everyone for showing up last Friday. It was really fun. We had 14 people show up. It’s nights like these that are great. We had really good competition for ST, 3S, and AE. All in one night:) Some new faces also that brought it in ST and 3S.

Thank you Tyranix, Necro, Lee, Eltrouble, Miller Time, Karafail, Julius, Papercut, Marcus, Erosentinel, Secret Character, Abbas, John, and ALAX.

Thank you everyone it was great. Let’s try this again on Friday:)

I had a pretty good time playing ST as usual, but I loved playing HF and A3. I greatly prefer HF, and if we had more competition and more reliable sticks, I’d be a happy camper. A3 is a pretty damn fun game, even though I don’t know what I’m doing most of the time, lol. That game deserves a bigger community and more tournaments than it has.

I hate missing out on Fridays…:frowning:

Aside from GGPO comp (which is shrinking) and getting my butt handed to me regularly by Tenren and Yuuki, I don’t think I’ll be able to spend as much time as I want on fighting games for the next few weeks. I have a tight schedule to follow in game development now, and 3s is worse than a heroin addiction for me. Not sure if I can spare a Friday in the future, but we’ll see.
