Ya you’re right the artwork, the music, the voice are better in the earlier versions. I think with latest versions they mainly focus on the gameplay mechanics. I mean look at how uninspired the backgrounds in 3S are compared to NG and SI. In 3S two characters share a background lol. Always compare how smooth and perfect the controllers and gameplay are in the last versions.
Alpha 3 is a great game but history tends to overlook it and not appreciate. They kinda reinvented SF2 with it. ST is a great game but I think A3 is the more evolved game. For younger players ST is an old game with limited options but A3 gives you more option they love the anime style artwork. To them ST is Donkey Kong.
And also I never understood the mentality on why people believed that Alpha 2 was better than Alpha 3. I’m getting this is a USA thing and not a shared belief in Japan. Playing it today Alpha 2 is outdated and not fun. And I use to play this all the time and it was fun. Now it’s just lame. Alpha 3 is where it’s at.

I think Thursday was the first time in over 4 years I played my brother in 3rd Strike. At first I thought him asking me to play was a joke since he was bored, but apparently he was serious. I don’t play as many games as he does nowadays since he plays everything, so I kind of assumed he would be decent at the least. Maybe it’s because I play Grant and everyone at a higher level, but it was the first real time where I could compare where I was years back and where I am currently. Out of 100 games, I won 96 of them. The other 4 were from playing with no buttons until I parried 10 times (I could push buttons after the 10th parry). I think what bothered him the most was dealing with Urien’s corner game/unblockables for the first time. I swear to God that’s everyone’s moment where they lose their virginity in 3rd Strike. Either way, he seemed interested in learning what I know, so I may bring him over one day. He likes 3rd Strike, but he keeps telling me that he prefers ST (da phuk?).
Also, yes, Ibuki’s standing-forward outside of throw range is proving to be the ideal tactic against everything, Grant. Just took me time work my gameplay around it.
See, I am not sure I would even play that much against someone who doesn’t know how to play the game.
When I first dove into Third Strike, I made sure to play on my own. I bought the Anniversary Collection for PS2 like 2 years after it came out and so I played on my own. I eventually started going to Regency to play 3S and then played at my college (up until they took out the machines… ) I still suck at the game though.
Come to think of it, I remember played a Q at Regency and between me and 3 of my friends, he racked up around 40/50 wins. It was around this time when I seriously wanted to get better at the game, I left so mad/determined that day. When I did go back a few weeks after, I did not see him there. I never did see him anymore…
When I first picked up the game, it pretty much was the same as you with Anniversary Collection. I played that with my brothers, but I remember hating how 3rd Strike felt at first until I got into Supercade. Back then, despite how bad I was, I played better people way deep into the 200’s just for the sake of playing since I never experienced a community playing the same fighting game before. Even when I jumped into GGPO, I played no matter my win/lose ratio so long as the other guy was fun to socialize with.
Truth of the matter is that I didn’t take this game seriously until I decided to go to Don’s and attend tournaments. The only thing that I don’t like is how much harder I have to study the game compared to the work I have to do for my job. Either way, for some reason, my brother enjoyed the matches and seeing the crazy things I was doing for the first time. He just wanted to play more as we went along, which genuinely surprised me.
That Yatagarasu 4 coming out for the 3DS… Man, that’s a handheld third strike made by KOF people. I’m bringing my 3DS every where, even here just because it’s pocket 3S!
Idk, 3S has always been blah to me. Veeeeeery boring, slow and just not SF to me. No one was even playing SF3 til they hopped on the EVO vids, and no one even played the first two SF3’s. CvS2 could be fum at times but its another been there done that game to me. I used to own ppl at RFC,Lakewood Aladin’s castle and LBCC havent touched the game in a loooong time. Btw I do like the Alpha series but that era of fighting games lasted so long that that is why i got burned out and stopped playing video games.
I agree with you that 3S is not like classical SF2 in the way that HF, ST, Alphas, and even CVS2 are. Those are great games and I love them but 3S is a great game. Perhaps one of the best if not the best fighting game ever made. You know it’s great when the creator of the Guilty Gear Series said it’s his favorite fighting game ever. I disagree that 3S is boring and slow. It’s quite the opposite. Capcom reinvented the wheel with 3S. It’s probably one of the most unique and original fighters out there. Where SF2 is checkers, SF3 is chess symbolically speaking. 3S is advanced Street Fighter. Don’t get me wrong I love the SF2 system. It’s classic. But after playing SF for many years for me the problem with SF2 and even SF4 is that you don’t have to commit to your moves to win. You could turtle and zone people to death and be a effective player. The best way someone put it: 3S is great because it rewards the player for his commitment to his moves. There’s not a lot of faking or pussy footing or waiting for someone else to do something. The good 3S players take the risk for doing their moves and get rewarded. It’s probably one of the purest fighting games ever made. You don’t lose to a lot of bullshit. The game really is in the player’s control.
Looking from the outside I could see why 3S wasn’t popular. It’s an “egghead game”. It’s very cerebral. Maybe as a video game it’s asking for too much effort and commitment. But the more you play it, the more it rewards. It’s a game that constantly evolves and it involves constant adaptation. The misconception is that it’s a very technical game. The thing is that 3S is easy to play just difficult to master because of the endless possibilities the game presents mentally. SNK games are highly technical because they have characters who have like a hundred moves. Not the case in 3S. It’s just the guy who’s smarter and more seasoned than you that beats you not because he can execute all these moves like in KOF. But no knock on KOF. Great series. It’s different in it’s own way.
There’s a lot BS in KOF you just have to deal with compared to 3s or even MoTW. Frame traps and ambiguous setups for days, but half of the time you’re playing rock-paper-scissors with normals and jump setups like it’s SF2. I like it, but it’s needlessly complex when you get to the heart of how you play it. Despite the execution requirements, it’s pretty derpy at times. You win with setups, generally speaking. Heck, I only have to press one button with Mature (close 5C) and her pressure game is pretty much autopilot, AA’s included. That’s kind of a bad habit in 3s, but KOF really does encourage priority abuse. The tech game isn’t super deep either aside from hop traps, anti-low pressure hops (because everyone wants to 2B all day), high-low conditioning, command throw baiting, counter hit setups, run-techs, and a few other things. You also tend to encounter the same situation all the time because of the lack of normals and the nature of specials. Some characters just lack tools to challenge situations (Mature needs meter to pressure King safely, otherwise that fight is in Kings favor indefinitely) – you either take it, block, roll-cancel (without getting baited), or C+D.
KOF is a good game, but not a very “smart” game, imho.
KOF is a good series. I haven’t played it enough to judge it but it’s a solid game that is a worthy alternative to the SF series. It actually has a lineage to SF because a lot of people who were in Capcom on the SF2 development team moved to SNK to help develop their fighting games. Fatal Fury actually came out before SF2. Like maybe 3 or 4 months before.
The thing about KOF is that it’s more rushdown than classic SF2. In SF2 you could space and zone with hadokens and shoryukens. In KOF you could just roll under them. You could also run in KOF. KOF was kinda like Marvel before Marvel. It was just constant aggressive movement. You could say that 3S is a lot like KOF in that both are rushdown games. But unlike KOF, you just can’t keep moving in and poking your way in all the time. You have to adapt and keep changing it up. Good 3S players have to keep outsmarting each other. It seems like you can’t fully download someone good in 3S. The system is flexible enough for constant adaptation. And that’s why after all these years the game is still fresh and spontaeneous.
Thank you everyone for showing up last Friday. It was fun. We had 14 people. Mr. 12 you missed a great 3S night. Dander and my Palm Springs buddies were there and they got down on 3S and Blazegreen lol. The three arcade techy guys who don’t play but just look at machines all day fixed my broken cab lol. Awesome. We ended like at 6 lol.
Thank you Ryan, James, Amed, Arcade Game, Tyranix, Rufus, Karafail, ALAX, Dan, Quan, John, Mario, Dander, and Danny. Thank you everyone and let’s do this again this coming Friday. Yay.
Btw with Dan showing up SF4 is kinda picking up again.
Tonight we shall have a gathering from 7pm-4am. Anyone and everyone is invited. The more the merrier. Anyone new who wishes to join please text me at 310 344 9367. I’ll be going around to collect the E fee so please have it ready when I ask.
I’ll see if I can make it tonight. I leveled up a little bit while I was away. =0
Edit: GGs guys. My brother enjoyed himself. 3rd Strike may not ultimately be his cup of tea, but Marvel 2 and 3 seem to have his interest (now I need to learn how to play those games to help him out). He’s still not comfortable with Japanese sticks though, but he’ll get there – takes time. Anyway, word on the street is that P4A is legit and then some. I’ll have to check it out. Strangely, unlike KOF for some reason, I want to play everyone in this. I can’t decide.
