Don's Arcade aka Astro City: Torrance/Carson Fridays 8pm-3am

Mr.12: No sweat man. Thank you for letting me have your Marvel stick with the limited edition artwork. You still have the box btw? If so can I have it?

Herman: I only play video games on Fridays but 3S is still my game. I love it. I just like promoting it now and trying to establish and maintain a strong following at my place. But ya I could still play. I think.

Dime: Long time no see bro!!! You are missed. How’s Austraila? Congrats on the baby. God Bless. Hope all is well.

Ya the Alpha 3 days in Hermosa Arcade were good times. We were all in our salty primes lol. Ya I remember Tom. That guy was so good it was annoying. He’d mess with you too. Like just walk back and forth and not do nothing. Every time I saw him in Hermosa he was always owing and winning the tournaments. I never saw Tom vulnerable before in Hermosa or at Alladin’s Castle. He was always winning. But there was one time when I made a trip to Southern Hills Golfland and I happened to see him there and he was getting owned in ST…by Alex Valle lol. I was funny seeing him lose and put quarters in the machine for once lol.

Here’s the biggest misconception about Super Turbo. A lot of the OG’s played Champion Edition and Hyper Fighting. When ST came out Street Fighter was going down and a lot of arcades didn’t get ST. So that game was rare and hard to find. Now when you hear stories or see videos of a bunch of newer players beating OG’s in Super Turbo is because ST wasn’t their game. It was Hyper Fighting. A lot of the top ST players started playing ST in 2004 when Anniversary edition came out and they used hori sticks and not American. So when you see OG’s lose to the top ST players today on Japanese it’s because they’re also use to American sticks. When the OG’s ruled the world this was in Hyper Fighting BD (Before Daigo). Daigo came on to the scene with ST.

So in the Golden Age of SF2 it was Hyper Fighting that was the game. A Super Turbo scene was non existent in the states. When it came out everyone hated Supers. It’s only today that Super Turbo is appreciated. It’s a better game then Hyper Fighting. ST aged like wine while HF feels a little incomplete. ST is a lot like 3S. Both games were unappreciated when they first came out. It’s like they were games made for the future. Alpha 3 was really popular in it’s day. No one plays it now but in it’s day it was like the coolest game ever. CVS2 had a mediocre following. Maybe too much was going on. But it was all about MVC2. Extremely popular. All the Marvel games were extremely popular.

Yes, I kept the box. It was too amazing to throw away. I’ll bring it next Friday.

Thank you:)

Here’s another funny thing about the difference between ST and 3S players today.

ST players are divided about what joystick to use: American or Japanese. Some can only play on US while some can only play on Japanese. So they got issues. ST players are also very supportive of each other lol.

3S players unanimously agree that it should be a Japanese H2H setup lol. And 3S players are really mean, snobby, and elitist lol.

Oh ya Mr.12: Sanchez is really gonna disagree with me on this because he doesn’t believe the guy I’m gonna write about is that good lol.

You always say that you won’t be good because you haven’t been playing that long and you’re behind compared to everyone else. At Regency there was this guy named Smiley who within a 6-8 month period went from just starting to play the game to beating everyone who was good at Regency and also was able to use almost every character. And this guy was also on the Tennis team at LB City College so he had to find time. It can happen and it can happen fast.

I’m decent, but I know I have a ton of room to improve to be the best. I shouldn’t lose at all if I know what my opponent is doing every single time. I want to be Tenren good and then some. Sure, I can beat most people with any character nowadays, but I still don’t have have the oddball match ups locked down perfectly to deal with the unpredictable (that’s what knocked me out of the SCR 3S brackets, after all), and I’m failing to maximize on all of Ibuki’s options still (SGGK, her unblockable, 20 other mix-ups I hardly use, etc). Plus, 3S is the “liquid” game where I should learn and adapt at a lightning fast rate. That’s why it’s so fun to me. You taught me that much, which is why I try and keep that much in mind whenever I play. =P

I won’t consider myself truly good until I can break even with the one player who I know is good and understands the game on an intimate level: Tenren.

Also: the sticks don’t matter. If you’re a strong enough player, you can play on American or Japanese to compensate for whatever the sticks lack in 3S (like the wonky down-back on the bats to your american cabs). If you’re good, you’ll win regardless – the mindset and the ability to adapt matters more. The irony is that most of the elitist, idiotic 3S players aren’t that good to begin with. You can’t have an ego in this game, otherwise you’ll shoot yourself in the foot and never improve. The amount of times I’ve been humbled by this game and some of the best players in the nation is ridiculous. There’s a reason why Diago consistently does well in the games he plays, and it’s not because of his execution or something magical. He learns, he stays focused, he thinks healthy thoughts, he looks for challenges, and he’s concerned with playing the perfect game – nothing less. I don’t know many American players who think that way unless they’re already doing well at majors (Wolfkrone is a decent example).

So on some levels yes, I do see and identify the fact that I’m improving, but if my sights were just set on doing well at your place, I would have taken my double win streak 3 weeks ago and called the whole place free like a douche. I’m in it for the community and playing the perfect game no matter who my opponent is, frankly. =P

you never saw tom getting owned? haha. he wasnt the best, 4th street used to have ALOT of good players come through… marco alvarado was the best at the time (A2 he couldnt be touched at) ralph used to beat tom for free on A3 (cause guy was a fucking ch##%$pass) i dont know if you’ve heard of “the butler” he plays sim on sf4… he was a REALLY good x sim on a3 back at 4th street. then there was oldschool sam who was ridiculous with hyperfighting and st chun… hes the only player that could “occasionally” beat marco.

i think watching marco play was the prettiest streetfighter i had ever seen played… it was like tomo only marco made mistakes… tomo didnt.

lol 4th street was pretty hype for its time… lol do you remember brandon call (kid that played hobie on the first season of baywatch and JT on step by step?) he was a regular at 4th street when world warrior came out as well.

i remember the first thing he ever said to me “do you know how to do dhalsims fireball?” i was like “um a fireball motion” and he was like “no the other one”

me:

lol i didnt know yoga flame existed at the time

-dime

I didn’t know about 4th Street until Alpha 1 came out lol. I was more in Alladin’s. Really Brandon Call from Step By Step was a local there? Funny. Was he good?

Ya Marco and Dilton always gave me problems in Alpha 3. They were good. A funny story about Marco. One time I was in Vegas at the Excalibur Arcade and own everyone in Alpha one then all of a sudden some guy puts up a quarter and it was Marco. Then he beat me and own everyone lol. I was like I go to Vegas to try to win and he comes all the way here too.

So what happened to that place? Why’d it close down? It was still going strong because MVC2 was out and everyone was playing there.

Thank you everyone for showing up last Friday night. We had 14 people. Thank you Shotosallday, Alexis, Karafail, Julius, ALAX, Ryan, Kevin, John, Luky, Leiland, Herman, Reggie, Mr. 12, and Lee.

Thank you everyone and let’s try to do this again on Friday.

I’m gonna take out AVP and put in Vampire Savior. And leave it there for a while.

Tomorrow we shall have a gathering. Anyone and everyone is invited. The more the merrier.

Hope to see y’all tomorrow.

GGs Don and John. It was nice getting in some time with Vampire. We need a scene for that game around here so bad. I can’t get enough of it.

@ Karafail: I’m up for going to Japan Arcade next weekend. You and I can get some good practice in next Friday if you want so we can gear up. I really want to see if my Ibuki has gotten any better since SCR.

Thanks Mr.12 for giving me the box. It’s nice.

Thank you everyone for showing up on Friday. We only had six people but it was a tight knit competitive group. We only played 3S and ST and it was on a high level.

Thank you Mr. 12, Lee, John, Rich, James, and Brett.

So far every week since I installed the ST Supergun, there’s been a brand new ST player joining us and they all been really good.

Let’s do this again on Friday.

Tomorrow we shall have a gathering. Anyone and everyone is invited. The more the merrier. Hope to see y’all here tomorrow.

Is there be any Skullgirls at the Don’s?

@ Sanchez: No, because no one wants to play it apparently outside of just me. The same thing happened with KOF 13. BTW, how are you feeling about Skullgirls so far, and do you think that the stronger players are pushing it hard enough?

@ Herman: GGs! That was one of the more intense sessions I’ve had in a while. Thanks for talking strategy with me. Hopefully we’ll get better at baiting once the concept is imbedded into our gameplay.

@ John: GGs! Your Bulleta is getting a lot better. The only real thing I can critique as far as your gameplay is the lack of chicken blocking. I ran all over you at one point until you really got down your timing for tick-throws. Since momentum is more important in this game than out poking your opponent, I’d actually recommend less air-to-air normal spam so that when I jump in, for example, you can block then go into an untechable hit with something like Bulleta’s Jab. That would definitely scare me from approaching you aggressively, since I wouldn’t be able to press buttons without being countered.

I’d definitely give SG a fair shake, except I’ve been having hell with my Sciatica acting up for the last little while. Doctor gave a prescription for 800mg if ibuprofen which doesn’t feel like it does a lot. been meaning to make the drive out again, but being in pain after 20 minutes of sitting down isn’t exactly appealing, no matter my love of games. Even on the PC it’s 20 minutes on, 30 minutes of wallking or laying down else where.

However, it sounds like some people are getting in on DS over SG. Inteeeeeresting.

12: I love the game. Don’t really care who plays it as long as they like it. We’ll get some SG and KOF in next time I roll by. Maybe next week(?).

Say Don? How close are you to pyrolee? You’ve told me that you’ve played him before, but I’ve never really asked about the history behind you two (if there’s any that’s worth discussing openly).
