Don's Arcade aka Astro City: Torrance/Carson Fridays 8pm-3am

lol, you make it sound as if I’m dead or something. I guess that just means you know the matchup a lot better now

I missed the shenanigans and fearing for my life if I don’t play the perfect game. I am not going to lie. =c

Anyone out there know how to make a clean looking wooden box? I need something to house my supergun.

Thanks everyone for showing up on Friday. We had seven people show up but it was fun at always. Perhaps everyone was watching the Hunger Games or maybe it was Nor Cal regionals. But it was fun nevertheless. A lot of 3S competition. Thank you Lee, Mr.12, Herman, Ryan, Eli, John, and Allen.

Thank you everyone for showing up. Let’s try this again this coming Friday.

Say Don, I think the jab button to my arcade stick is broken. For whatever reason, my inputs aren’t coming out consistently to the point where nothing happens at all. Is it alright if this Friday you can look at it? I’m not sure how to fix it. D=

I don’t mind looking at it but I can’t guarantee that I could fix it.

Yo Don, sorry I didn’t show up last Friday.

The truth is, I’m kinda at a Fighting Game crossroads. The more I play SFxT the angrier I get. I am frustrated with the mechanics of the game and I find myself getting MAD salty even when I win. I tried to like it, and I did like it for the first couple days… but the game didn’t really evolve after that. I have a ton of hours into this game and the only thing that has changed in my play is exicution and some more alpha counters. It may just be me, but I have hit a brick wall with this game and I have absolutely no desire to play it. My salt for that game is part of the reason why I didn’t come, I was just too mad to socialize lol.

So, I think I might go back to Super Turbo… not just every friday at your house, but like honestly playing this game on GGPO and the like more frequently. I don’t know how you feel about this, but with Super Arcade having their ST ranbats now and all this ST revival buzz, I think now is a prime time to start gathering a little ST scene in this area. C’mon, there needs to be more poeple like me, you and John around here!

P.S.

Are you still working on that Super Gun? If you need any help just let me know! You better put ST in that thing… lol

I technically play and know a little bit about the meta game for ST, though I haven’t touched it for a good 2 years now. The best player I ever played against was Damdai in a set of 50. I only won 5 times against his unblockable Ryu tatsu and his T.Hawk. =P

SFxT has driven me up the wall, and even though I’m becoming a lethal player in 3s, it would be nice FOR ONCE to play another game consistently at a higher level without random things coming up.

I think I lost it for SFxT when I read that it’s gonna be 2v2 for EVO and basically that may set a standard. NOPE, moving on and possibly back to SF4.

It’s all good. You don’t have to apologize for not showing up. Join us when ever you can.

I don’t know about SFxT. It was super hyped when it came out and now I read/see/hear all this backlash. I don’t really have an opinion about that game just like I don’t really have an opinion about the newer games such as UMVC3 and AE2012. I don’t want to hate them now because I know they’re the newer games and they influence the community a lot but they just don’t appeal to me for what ever reason. But I know they’re important.

I don’t want to be negative (because that gets you no where) but with just reading that Gootecks is leaving CC, I think the FGC is in decline. The SF4 madness that started in 09 is on it’s decline. SF4 brought ppl together and then every new Capcom game that came out after SSF4 fragmented the community. Capcom should have just kept it at UMVC3 and SSF4 AE 2012. Adding SFxT made it too crowded.

So what to do? Just stick to ST and 3S:) You’ll never get bored playing these games and they are eternally rewarding:)

Oh ya I did build my supergun. It works great:) Only problem is that I need a box to house it. It looks clean as can be on a piece of wood.

SFxT isn’t horrific, it’s just that I’ve played a better version of it before. It’s called CvS2. =P

Capcom has been fickle for years, so I can’t personally say that they’re entirely to blame for all of the recent drama. If Gootecks had a legitimate reason to leave, it was either because of a deal he had (or lost) with someone else involving a new opportunity outside of the FGC, or because he fell out of love with fighting games. Personally, I think it’s a combination of both. He has far fewer reasons to quit on a community that’s admittedly driven by social events and donations. Likewise for quitting CC since he’s not technically obligated to host every show/mini series since he can easily swap in other people – he is/was the producer, after all. If this is any sign showing his faith in the FGC then sure, maybe this is evidence that the scene is in decline. However, I find this hard to believe. I bet the source of all this craziness goes back to money and exposure though, like the MLG thing, or Evo’s weird choices lately. =P

Video games are too serious, yo… D=

What happened with MLG?

There’s a lot of rumors going around about what happened behind the scenes at Final Round with Gootecks that sounds pretty stupid since we’ve had people drunk commentating before. It’s all rumors at this point, and a lot of them could be true and make sense to me, but I’m not saying anymore about it here until I see more truth behind it. Which, may never actually come but I am good with that because there’s drama. I like drama.

But I absolutely hate seeing one of the guys I looked up to in the one game I actually gave a shit about in comparison to the games we have today. I still remember when I first met him in person. Back with that long silky smooth hair. @_@

There’s a rumor that Gootecks is bothered by the fact that Arturo Sanchez was picked to coordinate the MLG event for KOF, MK9, and SC5 despite the same experience (I don’t even know where this came from). The ORIGINAL rumor was that Gootecks was ratted out by Darry after Skisonic made a comment on stream during Final Round that he “looked high”. Darry told the guys in charge of Complexity which soon led to him being fired from CC.Col. Complexity confirmed that this wasn’t even true…and kind of dumb to believe. There’s a lot of finger pointing going on, but a lot of the sources are making bigger assumptions off of past events that weren’t super serious (the PL/Triforce phone call, Final Round, etc.).

I really wish I talked to Gootecks when I saw him at SCR though. I passed by him a few times, but I didn’t start up a conversation. I should have though. I’ve picked up one setup from watching his Urien that I used on Lucca, but that’s about it. I’m not entirely sure how I passed him up but somehow managed to learn the secrets to Mike Z’s Makoto. Mike Z flat out handed me technology and told me his weaknesses. o_O

Well if Gootecks is leaving the FGC, it’s kinda sad. It just goes to show that nothing last forever and everything ends someday.

Everyone thinks that the SF madness started in 09 but for me it actually “restarted” in the early 2000’s where 3S players were going to the hotspots starting with SHGL then to Camelot then to Regency then to FFA. AI was somewhere in between there. When SF4 came out in late 08, the mainstream was just being included in what we were already experiencing when it comes to the SF madness.

It might be the beginning of the end of an era.

I can believe that.

The times have changed, and most of the newer players aren’t really looking to be best in the scene, just the best in a local setting or online. Same for events; there’s a lot more spectators than players nowadays, and there’s this weird detachment between them and the people who actually play and get involved. Everyone who is/was already apart of the scene is/were doing what they do best before 08’, like you said. Only difference is that those guys made the effort to maintain the offline community and do events, like we still do now, even when nothing new was out. If that mentality wasn’t present going into 08’, I think SF4 would have ended up like DOA over here: an online only community with a fragmented player base with no thriving events outside of Japan.

Well the thing was when between the window of the SF4 arrival and before UMVC3 came out, there was so much passion in the community overall. People were making an effort to come together and play. And a lot of people were into SF4 and playing hard. A lot of people wanted to compete even in get togethers and casuals. It was kind of like the SF2 Golden Age, people were making it a priority to play SF4. Yes I hated SF4 but the energy I felt in these gatherings was tremendous. People were intense. A lot of ppl were addicted to SF4.

Now everyone is overwhelmed and quick to give up. When UMVC3 came out about half the people just quit all together while those remained just stopped playing SF4 all together.

I can’t blame them though. If you practiced hard in a fighting game and then a new one arrives and you have to start over, it can be demoralizing.

But looking back I don’t think it was suppose to be popular longer than this. Players can sustain this level of excitement for only so long. And when SF4 came out everything seemed new or new again. It was the first time in a long time people were coming together to play Street Fighter. I’ve been fortunate to live through two big SF eras. It can happen again but Capcom has to stop making fighting games for a long time before they bring it back. But if SF4 is the last SF to be on a arcade machine then it truly is over IMO.

I’m still trying to get over the part where you said that the SF community “restarted” in 2000 with 3S coming out. Was there some kind of down time where people didn’t play SF2 or Alpha or even CVS before 3rd Strike came out that I don’t know about?

I think people are just becoming a bit more aware of the shenanigans in these games now and how silly they are. You do X much work, and the Y comes in and Factors you to hell and back. Come back mechanics my ass. You know what was the best come back mechanic?

You. And Parrying.

From my recollection SF as the most popular fighting game in the arcade ended with Hyper Fighting. Super was a flop. And no one cared when ST came out. ST is really only appreciated today. During that time everyone or most people moved on to the Marvel games starting with Xmen Children of the Atom and the Tekken Series. Also MK and Killer Instinct was some where in there. The Alpha series was decent but it didn’t over take Marvel or Tekken players. SF3 series was a flop until 3S arrived and only a couple of years after it was released after Capcom stopped making fighting games for ten years and got quite popular. CVS had an ok following.

Tomorrow we shall have a gathering. Anyone and everyone is invited. The more the merrier.
