I’d definitely say it’s more of the venue and scene that heightens the experience. You can go to an arcade and play your 25 cents a game and be surrounded arcade trolls that do nothing to help each other or new players, or you can go and pay for your play time somewhere else on consoles and be with a group of people that are accommodating and helpful, willing to help each other improve.
Granted, anything anyone enjoys ends up in the “like a bike” scenario.
You don’t think going on a winning streak on a coin op is more exciting than going on a winning streak on console? For me playing AE at Alex’s machine than on console is more thrilling.
The same goes for 3S. Playing 3S at the smokeshop was much more fun then playing it on freeplay in my garage. Taking quarters and saving your money is a big part of the fun. Imagine if you could play UMVC3 like that. It’d be the most exciting thing.
I think the reason why arcade trolls don’t help is because there’s money on the line. An arcade is like the fighting games generation’s version of a casino. The money makes it thrilling.
But I know the world is more console now.
But it’s good to know the new KofXIII is going arcade:)
The reason other games don’t end up like SF is because there’s normally never a big enough following in the arcade scene or otherwise to support them when they fall off the mainstream bandwagon, despite if they’re good games that are fun to jump into. There’s simply more SF players than there are Tekken players or KOF players in the states, and that logic goes as far back as the late 80’s when arcades were bringing in everyone (though, historically speaking, there was a dip in who showed up at the arcades during the time after 1983, but I digress). And I agree; I wouldn’t care for casuals in the arcade if it weren’t for the venue/scene aspects at play, despite the tension of coin-op. Perfect example: the North-East; the New York area. They’ve leveled down BECAUSE of the loner/trolling mentality they’ve had since forever. 90’s arcades didn’t always have that friendly environment that Super Arcade and FFA have now – especially Super since it’s basically the Chinatown Fair of SoCal – but I really think that the rivalry that breeds from wanting to be the best comes more into play, especially in a place with ‘potential’ killers. SF has always had random challengers that could show you up because there’s simply more of us; so in a way, it makes sense that coin-op would only add oil to the fire.
I think a win streak will be much more exciting where ever you will find the most capable competition. Yeah, at one point it was the arcade, but with the way things have came about and people being spread out as much as we are, we’re finding our games in little meet ups or big casual / console set ups ( Don’s Arcade / Super Arcade’s console stations ). If the competition between the two places were reversed where Don’s had the quality of players that Super had, and Super had the more casual scene ( this is strictly for argument’s sake ), I think it’d be easier for my picture to be seen.
I really, really need to get on the ball and get going out to Super more. Holy shit though, gas spiked up to 4.35 now in two weeks from being down at 3.80. Fuck this economy.
I’m pretty sure I’ll be showing up tomorrow. I haven’t been around for a good minute now. I ‘think’ I will be buying SFxT though. I was on the fence forever, but I’ll give it a chance. I’m calling it now though: I will body you all for free…because Grant won’t be around to ruin my fun this time! >=D
Tonight we shall have a gathering from 7pm-4am. Anyone and everyone is invited. The more the merrier. I’ll be going around to collect the E fee so please have it ready when I ask. Anyone new who wishes to join us please text me at 310 344 9367. Hope to see you tonight.
Good times last night started off dry but Kicked up pretty well. Got some good marvel matches in with… geez im so bad with names. He played Spencer Frank and i think iron fist but GG’s to him. And GG’s to lee the T-Hawk player Strong as always. GG to Lukybear She-Hulk is nice and his GG’s to LukyBears buddy, I cant remember the name he played Wesker and… I cant even remember the team he had. But GG’s to all and Big Thanks to Don For hosting another great event. Great place to test your might and Level Up your Game.
Thank you Memories for showing up and joining us. It’s an honor to have all of you guys here choosing my place to battle and leveling up your game. It was quite fun.
Lucky 7. Although only 3 of them work for now. If you are familiar with CPS-3 technology, after a while the cartridges suicide and die. So in order for the four other boards to work I have to send the cartridges somewhere to get them rebooted. It’s a guy on eBay in Canada. He’s the only guy in this side of the hemisphere who knows how to do it. But I’ll get those 4 dead carts rebooted later. I don’t have enough cabs to put it in anyway. My goal is to own 10 versus cabs and to put 5 3S’s and 5 ST’s in them lol.
Thank you everyone for showing up this past Friday and making it an event. 13 people showed up. It was a sea of great UMVC3 competition. 3 UMVC3 setups had to be used to accomdate everyone. Thank you Lee, Antwan, Memories, Erosentinel, Mr. 12, Galzpanic, Tri, Strider, Leiland, Loopy, Mcloud, John, and Luky for joining us.
If all goes to plan I hope to have Street Fighter X Tekken this Friday for PS3.
To be honest with you I’m not really feelin any of the new games. I’m just getting them for the community. The only game I’m really feelin is 3rd Strike. I had a blast battling Mr.12 at it last Friday. I know it’s not a popular game right now. Some say it’s old but I think it’s the most evolved fighting game out there. It’s that rare breed of sophisticated game that belongs with Virtua Fighter and Guilty Gear.
For me I’m guessing that the Tekken players will dominate SFxT. That rush down and those block strings will be too much for SF characters. And I never liked Tekken:(
Aside from the high level players like Tenren and Sanchez (Grant’s stupid Makoto aside), no one else really pushes 3rd Strike as hard around there. I don’t even need Ibuki anymore to win comfortably – my pocket Ken proved that much, easily. Granted, if 3S is the only game you want to play Don, I’m up for it. I hate your Q, but I’m up for it. I’ll see if I can put in the time for Yun.
I don’t really know if the Tekken guys will be the most dominate group playing SFxT. The game is still fundamentally a street fighter game (albeit a slightly more aggressive version of SF4), so it’s not too far from the norm. I think that the SF4 mentality will get you killed in this game – that much I believe. Any sort of background in footsies/rushdown heavy games like Vampire Saviour, Alpha 2, Guilty Gear, or 2nd Impact will probably take you further since block-string fundamentals are extreme in those games.
The block string’s aren’t safe, if you’re talking about them after watching Heihachi’s combo abilities. The over head / ground bounce in the middle of that combo isn’t a true block string and he’s going to eat a DP / Command Grab every time that string gets blocked. Heihachi’s will have to end the block string at about three hits to confirm the combination.
And I’m willing to bet that’s the same for a LOT of the tekken cast, so the Tekken rush down block string idea is kinda meh. Even then, Rolento’s got even better block string pressure than the Tekken cast by far.
Sanchez! One of the few men I can say I missed hanging out with. Seriously. Hilarity ensues with this man that the youngins just cannot comprehend 70% of the time.
No homo. Actually, should I be expecting more running jaguar bomb shenanigans from you playing King in SFxT, good sir?
Yo, Don. If you get the game for Friday night, I’ll make the effort to head on out. If you do get it, hit me up with where you copped a copy from. I’m expecting my spot in Long Beach to get it, which means I’ll pick it up come Thursday afternoon if not Friday morning. Anything to get it ASAP. ; ;
I guess I am the only one who isn’t purchasing SF X Tekken.
The Vita announcement with additional characters just screams “STAY AWAY UNTIL SUPER SF X TEKKEN”. I am at the point where I am being burned every time I purchase something, I want the complete package.
NakedSnake: I’ll probably see you at that same Long Beach place lol.
Sugafree: I totally agree. Nine months now it’s gonna be Super SFxT lol.
Well I don’t mind buying these fighting games because I’m also a collector. But I don’t like the new game fighting games as I always say. The FGC is missing out by not playing 3S. It’s over:p
