Depends on service, 15% to 20% unless it is horrible service, if that is the case I tip lower than that and don’t go back to that restaurant.

I’m black and I don’t go to restaurants. When I do go, My group puts in 20%. But usually I’m going with a group of SRKers, so we’re not all black either. I don’t see why people would get into service knowing you’re going to get shafted by both the management and even your clients sometimes. When I was in highschool at least I was getting a guaranteed 7.50$ an hour just to stand around McDonalds and pretend to mop the floors every now and then. I was making 500$+ a biweekly in highschool, it was pretty ballin.

I’m speaking purely anecdotally, but based on what I know, being a waiter, despite the horror stories, is one of the highest paid entry level jobs for untrained workers. Yeah it sucks to get stiffed, and you could possibly work a day and not make anything, but all waiters I’ve known average much higher pay than a retail or fast food customer.

I guess it depends on the Region then. I live in WI and we have one of the highest property tax and sales tax (damn Miller Park) in the country. Every region has there rules. I am only off 9.25% in yours. LOL

This gives me an idea, if not already in place. Someone should be a Tipologist and have a website that can pin point where an individual lives and help determine the proper tip. The website could use all types of variables; income, location, race, education, and favorite SSF4 character to determine your tip.

The tip at expensive restaurant might not seem justified (there really isn’t right or wrong about it imo) but take some things into consideration:

1. IRS assume they get tip well, different states got different rules but if you work at a expensive restaurant IRS will ask you for that kind of tax from your tips

2. Tips are a major part of income for waiter/waitress, most if not all restaurant’s salary doesn’t reflect the work the waiter have to do. Waiter’s work isn’t hard to learn but sure it is a pain in the ass to do & tiring, especially to deal with shitty rude customers.

But of course, when a waitress freaking chase you after you step out of a Japanese restaurant in downtown and DEMAND you to tip more because you tipped 14 instead of 15 those can really DIAF.

I’m black and I always tip 20% at a restaurant. I don’t tip certain delivery though, because they charge you that themselves. Depends on who delivers.

Oh but I always tell them to keep the change if I don’t have the exact amount.

If I’m out at an expensive restaurant and it’s on me to leave a tip… 2-5 bucks is what’s going to sit on the table, no matter the size of the bill. Why should a waiter at a fancy restaurant get a bigger tip just because I ordered more expensive food? He didn’t serve me any better than someone down at a local diner.

agreed. i know what you mean. sometimes i hesitate going to higher end restaurants because of knowing id be paying 15-20% of a $300.00 bill. ughh.

The common sense tip is to multiple tax by 3. Give or take based on service. If you can not afford tip, go to a fast food joint.

Never tip on alcohol, unless orderd at a bar.

I hate these type of articles. The article is just generalized waiter experiences and over paid researchers blaming a problem on race. Blah, Blah, Blah. Race has become a crutch to justfy everyones misfortunate. Its not me, its my race.

There are too many variables for us to be able to say, “Based on this study, black people don’t tip as well as white people.”

Maybe the wait staff give shitty service to black people because they don’t expect a tip, so they get low tips. Maybe the restaurant gets a lot of white customers, so when a white person doesn’t tip well they see it as “that guy” being a jerk, but since black people rarely come in, when one doesn’t tip well, they see it as “that black guy” being a jerk. I could go on, but you get it.

Researchers are not overpaid

IMO,researchers that contribute to these type of articles are. My wife is a Clinacal Researh Coordinator that handles organ transplants. If I was asked if she was underpaid, I would say YES!!! But, I think that the type of research represented in the article is just not productive.

Waiters/Waitresses are under paid.

I worked at a Village Inn last summer as a server and it sucks. And the tips were garbage. I now tip a little more then I used to, especially if I notice the place being packed.
