Does race play a role in the way we tip? [ARTICLE]

I always give the waiter tips on how they could do their job better! :wonder:

fuck yea. im asian and i hate everyone.

jk, im pretty critical on tipping. i usually base it on their timeliness and genuine enthusiasm.

You do realize by encouraging everyone not to tip every server will get minimum wage regardless of how well they’re serving you. Hell, as long as they punch in your order correctly at that point you should be so lucky.

The point is, if the server knows he’s not getting tipped, he ceases to work hard. It’s just the way things go in the service industry. I had a woman told me at the start of her meal she didn’t believe in tipping so she got hardly any service. I’m sorry, but they DON’T pay me to wait on you. When I was a server the biggest paycheck I got was $25 for two weeks worth of full-time pay. Earning $2.17/hr when taxes come out of it is a bitch.

And also, please keep in mind that if your grocery store clerk fucks up, he/she still gets paid. If some dude at McDonald’s messes up, he still gets paid. If you have to bring your car back to the mechanic that guy is still making his hourly. Table waiting is one of the ONLY professions that you can make someone not get paid for. So if you reaaaaallly feel the urge to stiff, try tipping like 5% instead. Tipping nothing just makes you look like an asshole where a 5% tip makes the server realize he fucked up.

The Official SRK Tipping Thread

People tip a whole lost less than they say they do. Average is about 16% in socal.

I think some people are failing to grasp that this thread is about people tipping the waiter/server based on the tipper’s race, not the waiter/server’s race.

I’ve never worked in the service industry, but I’ve heard from people who have that certain races will tip less (or sometimes not at all) more than others, particularly black people. As for myself, being white/asian, I tip 15% if the service was standard/average (order is right, food and drinks arrive within reasonable time depending on how busy it is). If the service is shitty, I will tip less. If the service is beyond my expectations, I’ll tip more.

Its feast or famine. A McD’s worker also is incapable of pocketing $100 cash for a single nights work.

wait wait wait… you think the OP is trying to get at the idea that black people are the worse tippers? jk

i heard it from my friend who works at outback steakhouse that its near 100% true. she, herself, is black. whys everything gotta do with race? i think the more correct term is culture.

I usually tip if the service is adequate, just because I worked a shitty job for a long time where nobody got tipped (with rare exception).

That said, I honestly think it’s a cultural thing, not just a “black people are cheap” thing. And there’s also the Mr. Pink philosophy, which applies to people of all stripes.

I would also agree with it being a culture thing more than race. Depends on how you’re raised IMO.

This article is not to be taken seriously. It has almost no facts and deals with stereotypes and perceptions without properly questioning them.

So we have a waiter and one person being used to represent a diverse nation-wide industry of millions, with one of them claiming to understand the “secret” of a “wide spread perception.” This person believes that SOME of the evidence compiled in a paper–a paper which isn’t quoted here, btw–supports (not CONFIRMS, but SUPPORTS) a stereotype. Its like the author of the article didn’t even read the supposed paper himself, instead choosing to quote what Lynne says ABOUT the paper and treat it as fact, despite that Lynne’s comments (which are supported by this paper) are pivotal to taking his article seriously as something other than bs racial spewing. Its all so shallow. For example, did the paper present any COUNTER evidence to the idea that blacks don’t tip well? (Rememer, only SOME of the evidence supports that idea, not all or even most). Why aren’t we provided with actual numbers and percentages concerning who tips how much? How do other store owners/waiters feel, especially the ones who, say, DON’T have a problem with blacks and tipping? What about the diversity within the “black” community: do recent African and Caribbean immigrants tip the same as African-Americans? What about rich African-Americans as opposed to middle and lower economic class African-Americans, is there no difference at all? Wouldn’t that seem a little strange? And getting to that, there’s a real dearth of discussion concerning the CAUSES of the alleged lack of tipping. Simply put: why? This is a weak article with no facts or even deductive reasoning or decent anecdotal evidence to support it, its using talk of race to get attention.

Edit: Not actually saying that some people do or don’t tip more, I’m saying this article is bullshit that presents a weak argument. Not interested in contradicting anyone’s personal experiences.

Double edit:

Pretty much. :chat:

I’m a mexican-colombian-african-american male working at a filipino restaurant. I’m the only non-filipino waiter there at the moment. But I get tip’d good regardless of my race. Sometimes I get a lot of ignorant questions like “why aren’t you filipino, or why can’t you speak tagalog?”, but the most i can say is sorry for being born this way, lol. For the most part I am treated equally to my other co-workers. Sometimes the older ones who don’t speak much english take preference to the tagalog speakers, which is natural because no one wants to suffer taking an order from someone who can’t understand. And when i go to restaurants now, i generally leave a decent size tip. Working in a restaurant, i’ve learned to be more patient for waiters than i was in the past, just because i know all the shit they go through to make a dollar.

thats a great point about how sometimes the tip is shared among the entire staff. but in the end it’s how well the waiter performed. regardless of how clean the floor and kitchen is, or how well the food was prepared, or how fast the busboy busted the table so you can be seated, people usually tip according to the performance of the waiters.

its apparent when sometimes your food comes out tasting like ass or was overcooked when you asked for medium-rare, but you over look that stuff when the waiter comes by and asks you why youre disappointed and tries to correct the issue as best he/she can. yea, he/she can be acting extra attentive to recover what little chance that he/she might be getting any tip at all. but the extra effort deserves some gratitude.

I’m black and I don’t go to restaurants. When I do go, My group puts in 20%. But usually I’m going with a group of SRKers, so we’re not all black either. I don’t see why people would get into service knowing you’re going to get shafted by both the management and even your clients sometimes. When I was in highschool at least I was getting a guaranteed 7.50$ an hour just to stand around McDonalds and pretend to mop the floors every now and then. I was making 500$+ a biweekly in highschool, it was pretty ballin.

The common sense tip is to multiple tax by 3. Give or take based on service. If you can not afford tip, go to a fast food joint.

Never tip on alcohol, unless orderd at a bar.

I hate these type of articles. The article is just generalized waiter experiences and over paid researchers blaming a problem on race. Blah, Blah, Blah. Race has become a crutch to justfy everyones misfortunate. Its not me, its my race.

So…

I’ve noticed that nobody has made a slight towards Jews and their notorious stinginess yet. Why is this?

I’m kinda weird about tipping in that I don’t necessarily believe in tipping based on percentage, but more of a flat fee of between 2 and 5 bucks depending on the service. I don’t see how it could be because I’m black, as it can’t be from my upbringing because my mom sure as hell doesn’t agree with me.

If I’m out at an expensive restaurant and it’s on me to leave a tip… 2-5 bucks is what’s going to sit on the table, no matter the size of the bill. Why should a waiter at a fancy restaurant get a bigger tip just because I ordered more expensive food? He didn’t serve me any better than someone down at a local diner.

edit: I flat out don’t believe that carrying me food is ever worth more than 5$ I expect restaurant food to have something awful done to it anyway, so I have no fear of retribution there.

I don’t know what the tax rate is in Chocobo Paradise, but here in CA, our sales tax is 9.75%, and hell no, I’m not going to tip 29.25%.

And what about places with no sales tax? No tax means no tip? That’s fucked the fuck up, man.

ya i tip tax times 3
15% is about right

nobody here waiters at a kosher restaurant

It’s because Jewish people don’t look black. :coffee:

On a more serious note, most Jews are white, so they’d be clumped in with white people. On average, white people tip more often than black people do.

It might be different in the LA area (and counties), but in Sacramento county the sales tax is 8.75%. Are you sure it’s 9.75%? Saying CA has a tax of 9.75% is slightly inaccurate; I think it’s probably safe to say it’s between 8-10% based on counties. :o
