Does jumping makes you move faster?

I’ve done this before as a beginner in street fighter. When I move forward to my opponent, or want to move away, I jump back or forth. Now I don’t do that anymore, because it gives your opponent to counter, it makes your character look stupid(they look like they have pogo sticks for their legs!), and it makes you look like a :arazz:n00b:arazz:(it does, people). I see people playing sf4 xbox360 kiosk at GameStop that does this frequently. I saw this video on youtube which is pretty much what I see at the kiosk.

Both of them literally never played this game before. They are beginner, and they just jump around. And so, here is the question:

Does jumping makes you move faster?

:coffee:

only in kof xi

depends on your character

Standing still makes you move faster.

/Deep

depends of the game, in sf jumping is bad, but in games like gg, mvc2, kof, jumping is useful tool to control your space

standing>walking>running>short hop>jump>super jump

basically the higher and the faster, the better.

you do realize that notation reads

standing is greathr than walking

walking is greater than running

short hop is greater than jump

jump is greater than super jump

exactly opposite to what you posted after it… either way you read it though, that’s incredibly stupid, each form of movement whatever game you’re playing has to offer is going to benefit you in certain situations, and fail you in others.

By TvC notation that’s pretty spot on though.

Ken wins matches just by super jumping. XD

Yeah I wasn’t serious, it was a joke. Also I had my signs flipped, but rather than edit it, I will leave it as an everlasting symbol of my shame.

Jumping isn’t bad, predictable jumping is though. You will see nearly anyone jump-in even in the highest level matches. Street Fighter is a highly mental game afterall. So what happens is that some people get harassed some much on the ground they risk jumping in. This is common for newbies when you zone them, and they can’t seem to keep up with your projectiles, they’ll start getting frustrated and jumping in predictably. If you’re waiting for it, they are eating an anti-air for free.

Anyway, jumping isn’t bad in fighting games. But you’ll see pros only jump from a certain distance. they’ll generally know the range of your anti air attacks and will jump in knowing they are safe and bait out your anti-airs and punish accordingly. Jumping covers a lot of space but it comes with risk. Also what you jump with is very important as well. Most people will jump in with heavy kick, which has a fat hit box, and are easy to be hit by anti-airs. Most intermediate to advance players will generally make their jump-ins a guessing game by jumping in with various attacks, since from certain distances they are hard to punish on reaction

Jumping IS bad in games like Guilty Gear and Marvel. Though these games have more variable gravity, so it depends on why you’re jumping. Jumping itself isn’t bad in SF, it’s JUMP-INs that are bad. They are equally as bad in games like Guilty Gear, hell even worse. You can not only be punished for humping in, but you can be use your anti-air to start combos. This is why you rarely see jump-in combos in high level Guilty Gear or Marvel matches. Most combos start from mid and low pokes. Jumping in predictably is bad in any game. People notice it less in games like Marvel and Guilty Gear because of the variable jump height’s in that game. But if jump-ins were really all that great, you’d seem more combos start from successful jump-ins in high level matches.

Thanks for the inputs guys.
Man, youtube comments are crap

But in those games jumping is more like a horizontal dash.

jumping in general is shitty because then you have to worry about anti air. Unless the game has air block.

It really depends on what youre playing.

I dont understand the OP completely.

yes, keep jumping…please…dont stop…just jump…

Slayer’s J+HS, Baiken’s air-tatami, Jam’s air-dash 214+K, pot’s J+Dust…
I don’t know about Marvel, but I see lots of spammable jump shit in GG (il all depends on the match up and the opponent’s anti-air options).

I play Jam at a “decent” level, and I am in mid air most of the time.

Thanks for sharing.

We learn special pro-level approach techniques everyday on srk lately!

jumping is a main part of the offense in marvel for most characters… sentinel’s always flying, storm’s mostly in the air, etc.

jumping was bad on oldschool streetfighter. you get aa’d and that allows your opponent to set up there offense or defense which could lose you the round.

every game after ST and even in ST (to a certain extent) jumping has been GOOD.

in sf4 jumping/ using an air based attack like divekicks or burning kicks or air tatsu, fuerte splash etc. make the game VERY jumpy. command jumps like devils reverse or stomp or even safe tiger knee all count as some form of jump.

sf4 as well as pretty much ALL new fighting games since the alpha series have all been jumpy as fuck. it caters to those that cant zone well… i include myself in the list of people that cant zone well, but i still hate the jump laden systems of new… but complaining wont get me anywhere.

so to reiterate: jump is alive and well, and isnt the noobshit that people make it out to be.
it SHOULD be noobshit but since the games that are coming out all support it so much (through REALLY shitty AA’s as well as many FORMS of jumping such as what i listed), it’s not.

I agree. Jumping is very strong in GG. Especially when you have a high priority air normal like Moroha ABA’s j.HS. You can hit people with this and it literally beats any ground normal.

You are in the air VERY often in GG. Especially with dash cancelling, characters live in the air.
