Does anyone use the PS3 controller for fighting games?

I’m too poor right now atm and i recently bought MK9 and want to get decent.

If you use it, do you use the d pad or the joystick? Just curious because i find the joystick hard as hell.

I play Super Turbo on pad at times… The analog stick sucks in my opinion… Others like it. I don’t like the PS3 pad though because of the R2 trigger. I use a PS2 pad with an adapter when playing.

PS3 pad is best pad. PS3 d-pad is best d-pad.

dude, the console controllers suck for fighters.
i know, since i use them till recently.
for mk9, i dunno.
but for games that require half circle, double quarter circle, and 360 movements…they suck monkey balls.
now the SNES D-pad controller was gdlk!
that D-pad was made by geniuses! even 360 motions like Zangief’s piledriver was easy and consistent.
but the sony and xbox controller D-pads are horrid and sooooo not a fighting games best friend…i don’t know about gamecube/wii controllers since i’ve never played those consoles.
the last thing you need is your controller working against you instead of for you.
my recommendation…
save your pennies and get a stick.
not just for mk9…but for any/all your fighters. past, present, and future.
the last thing you need is frustrations from your console’s controller misreading your inputs(which it will) and your victory being denied by some direction input misinterpretation.
they don’t call console controllers “oven mitt sticks” for nothing. cuz thats how they’ll feel like after so many dropped combos. like your playing while wearing mitts.
i.e., no precision and accuracy of input commands!!!

There are plenty of people who use PS3 pads for fighting games. The PS3 d-pad is the second best out there, right after the Sega Saturn’s, use it (or get an arcade stick, but MK9 is honestly designed with pad in mind).

It’s worth noting that some tournaments (e.g. Evo) ban wireless controllers, so you will have to use a PS2 pad and converter if you want to enter one of those.

what is it with fgd and the shity thread, its like its a magnet for them

ah alright, thanks i’m just wondering cuz i saw a grand final mk9 match in a tourny where at the end of the vid it shows the players using the ps3 controller. I thought all pros used fight sticks

Nope… Dude won HDR at Evolution with a pad… and he uses Zangief… SnakeEyes, I think is his name?

Fanatiq plays Marvel vs. Capcom 2 with a pad, and he’s better than 95% of the people that have ever played the game. Probably in the top 5 overall players, being Wong, Yipes, Duc, Fanatiq, and Neo, IMO… Sanford, Clock, and Chunk are very honorable mentions in that list.

Lots of players use pad.

I used to for super street fighter but i bought an fight stick recently. The ps3 joystick is alright but certain moves are hard to do.The d-pad is very hard for me.My hand slips alot when i try to use it.My main is Chun Li and charge characters aren’t good when your using a reg ps3 controller. With the arcade stick my moves come out more fluently.

Pad is easier to mash with.

I have horrible experiences playing with a pad after owning a custom stick. Even before, playing fighting games on a pad sucked. I’d get blisters on my left thumb a lot if I’m using the directional pad. My hands would cramp up during long play. I feel limited in what I can execute as my thumb has limited dexterity. And the analog stick fucking sucks. Arcade Sticks are fucking great when you get used to them. I can execute moves more consistently and precisely. I have multiple fingers that have the advantage over my single right thumb. If you like fighting games and have/plan play them for a while, I would suggest an arcade stick.

Tekken says hi.

One time I saw a guy at an arcade using a PS controller for Tekken.

I play fighters with the Playstation pad. Most of my fighter experience comes playing them of consoles so pad is a natural fit for me.

Doesn’t Vangief use a ps3 pad?

A lot of players use PS pads for Tekken.

I used the xbox pad for a while, but it sucked. I like the stick better, I don’t even wantv to play a fighter without a stick anymore.

Madcatz fightpad iirc

I use PS3 Pad for Soul Cal, Tekken, SF, MVC. No Claw for me, these thumbs dominate.

Use Stick or Pad, whatever you like. There is not correct way to play, although everyone here will tell you otherwise.

a “Pad” Viper beat J Wong in SSF4, recently, so just use what you feel is comfortable.

MK9 on stick is ass.
