I can tell you that the save state function in 3SOE will cause you to get the same rocks every time you reload and activate.

‘random’ with a computer is never random. (like ESN is talking about)
of course it works on some scheme, it isn’t 100% random, it’s just possibly convoluted to the point where it’s useless to try and actively control it.
computers can’t actually do random number generation. they can imitate it enough that it seems random enough to us.
this spirals into a philosophical wormhole.

wondering if he had a chance to try some stuff out with all that info.
it would be crazy cool if there were repeatable sequences to get certain stones. there are of course sequences but i’d bet they aren’t really repeatable except when doing save state. otherwise i imagine every frame the game is going through its bookkeeping and i’d bet part of tengu stones is based on that bookkeeping which would include things like time keeping (which obviously you can’t ‘repeat’ on demand exactly, even if there is a specific cycle).

Maybe someone (@jedpossum ?) into ROM hacking could look into it? I have no idea how much work it would take, but it may be possible to at least get an idea of what the game takes into account.
