Does anybody think being obese is caused by lack of discipline or genetic

I have nothing against fat people they just aren’t normal regardless of what excuses you make nobody is supposed to be 300 pounds and can’t walk a quarter mile . There is nothing fascist or superficial about your government creating exercise programs and not dating someone who is fat.

How can your girlfriend love you with all here heart if it ain’t healthy.?

Fatty here.

A few interesting points in this thread, but some callous attitudes have me a little worried. I can’t remember what it was from (I think a stand-up comedian said it), but obesity is the one thing people have left that we can make fun of without fearing repercussion. If you mock someone based on sex, sexual orientation, race, religion, etc., you’re looking at a trip to Lawsuitville. But make fun of someone for being a fat fuck and you’re just fine, 'cause hey it’s their own fault right?

Being overweight is a self-demoralizing and self-debilitating thing. It’s tough looking in the mirror after a shower and seeing all that fat, thinking to myself “wow, what girl would ever want to go out with me?” (btw, I’m 23 and still never had a girlfriend, go me) It’s tough trying to justify buying fruits and vegetables when frozen pizzas and cookies are so much tastier, and it’s tough justifying paying so much more for “health food” when it usually tastes like garbage and my wallet’s empty in the first place. A $2 frozen pizza (on sale of course) can keep me full for half a day whereas a $4 Kashi bar will do nothing.

And it doesn’t help that I work at Taco Bell. Not by choice, but the simple fact that I couldn’t find another goddamn job in this stupid fucking economy, and apparently TB is the only place that’s interested in my 4+ years of management experience. Regardless, it’s now much easier and cheaper for broke me to accept and consume a free burrito than to eat right. Add to that the fact that my feet are in blistering pain after standing for 9 hours that any form of exercise seems like it would be suicide. Fuck, today’s my day off and I can barely move, let alone go for a walk.

Both my families (mom’s and dad’s side) are predisposed to poor metabolism and obesity, but I believe things such as metabolism and genetics have a -slight- role, not as prominent of a role as the daytime specials would like to shove down our throats. It’s much more to do with self-control, eating right, and exercise. But all these things come at a price - physically, monetarily, mentally. The position I’m in right now, I can’t afford to lose weight. Literally can’t afford it. I’m basically living off of shitty Taco Bell food because I can’t buy groceries, and I’m in too much pain to exercise because of my work. I can skip meals, sure, but then I’m miserable and in more pain afterwords.

But I dunno. Am I just making excuses to justify myself? Or am I really in such a salty situation that weight loss is beyond my reach? All I know is I don’t consider myself “disgusting” or a “fat fuck” - I’d wager I’m a human being just like everyone else. But it sure doesn’t help when I read stuff in topics like this saying I’m worthless and incapable because of my size.

Agreed! I used to be crazy overweight my whole life until a few years recently, and now i’m in amazing shape.

I’m no special case either, the only thing that separates me from typical obese types out there, is the DRIVE and the WILL to get it done(and keep it off long after).

The majority of those overweight out there have it well within their power to make the change. No excuse but their own weakness.

I know money is a huge factor but, don’t you think your health is more important than that.

well it is your own fault. in the same way nobody really feels bad for smokers that got lung cancer after smoking for 2 packs a day for 40 years they shouldn’t for a fat person. the difference being smokers actually pay a fuckton of tax ot do what they do and once they get the big C they’re usually out of here within a year or so; fat asses on the other are eye sores that drain the economy for decades on end.

true that. I like how in Australia they turn down fat people for citizenship because they think they will just come in and drain their health care. props

One problem with the modern era is too many have junkfoods integrated/engained in their everyday lifestyles, and they just can’t bring themselves to break that cycle. They can’t imagine life with such things removed for good, and yet it is the constant involvement of it that strongly contributes to being overweight.

The reality of it is foods like Apple pies, ice cream, and snickers bars are every bit as much of a vice for the WEAK as stuff like cigarettes & alcohol are.

Just as harmful in the end too. Only different health risks involved.

The first part of my post wasn’t about “feeling bad” for someone, it was about mocking them. Mockery is mockery. Making fun of someone, no matter what they’re made fun of for, is still hurtful - it’s just that people can get away with treating overweight people like human waste because it’s something that “can be helped.” (Protip: it’s not always something that can be helped.)

And I’m really finding from your posts, Thurst, that you’re an incredibly callous person. Must be rough up there on that high horse of yours.

LOL forget austraila, here in the good ol’ U.S, good luck finding a job if one is obese. Hell, especially with the way the economy sucks hard right now, jobs are hard enough to come by as it is.

And those areas that are looking to hire, aren’t going to want to deal with an overweight employee who may not be able to meet the needs of the job(if theres any big/consistent activity involved). As well as health care risks/costs.

Being overweight is just a huge DISADVANTAGE overall in life. Not just for obviousness of looks/dating issues, but just life and well being in general. And yet this is not a good enough reason for many to get off their asses and make the improvements.

Edit: sorry if this sounds harsh, but as a former human planet for many years, i believe i can say that such types have no excuses but their own sheer lack of initiative.

Oh god where do I start.

Yes, it is.
Instead of sitting down typing about it, DO SOMETHING.

This here is another fucking problem.
The answer is simple…It’s better for you.
Don’t be a dumbass and pretend like you don’t know what foods are good and bad for you and make the taste excuse.
Diets take adjustment, but it doesn’t work if you don’t even fucking try.

So bring things in from home, and eat that. Again, more excuses.
I was watching a documentary last night about obesity, which happened to have George W Bush in it, and this was the smartest thing I heard come out of his mouth, that I just HAD to agree with him.
“If people have the will, they will make the time to exercise.”

Can’t afford?? GTFO with that BS.
When I started losing weight back in 2001, I went to the park (cost $0) and walked/jogged (cost $0) for about 2 - 3 miles a day. This was after a 8 hour day at school. Dont gimme that BS.

Yes you are making lame excuses. But the problem is that when an overweight person doesn’t even try and or make excuses thats when shit hits the fan.

I went from being 250 pounds to 135 as of June 2009. Now I’m gaining in muscle and I’m back to 150. I feel awesome.

You’re probably broke too from buying so many tissues to soak up your big fatty tears.

Oh, no. Not an 8 hour day at school, sitting on your ass listening to your teacher lecture. God, how awful for your body.

I’m standing for 8-9 hours a day, slavering over a 180+ degree hot table or a 370+ degree fryer, sweating my nuts off and obliterating my feet on a concrete floor. I’m already overweight - it adds to the poundage being forced down on my flat feet. I’m in extreme pain after work. Painkillers help a bit, but not enough to make it go away. And you expect me to magically be capable of walking 2-3 miles every day after this shit?

But whatever. Obviously I’m just making “excuses.” The primary point of my post wasn’t to show a circumstance where weight loss, while still attainable, is incredibly difficult - at least more difficult for Mr. 8-hours-of-school. But that doesn’t matter, right?

I lol’d.

ITT: a bunch of skinny people talking about how awesome it is to be skinny and how fat people are worthless, stupid and have no self-control.

I must have misread the topic title.

It doesn’t, because again, your one track fat brain keeps making excuses and crying. Is that really the only bit of my post that you could focus on?

Recess, its not just for kids.

60 minutes. It is long but find SOMETHING active to do. (Hate running? go HIKING!)

Gandara: you are in a tough situation, but just ask yourself if you want to change. If the answer is YES, just just work slowly at your goal. Work with something small, like as an example: Cut out soda. This thread might not be the best, but look over at the SRK body transformation thread. Post up everyday there and they will help you through it. Your weight IS something you can control.

I will admit, it is an eye sore to see an obese person (more so if it a female).

Don’t act indignant, you are making excuses. I don’t think you really need to make the point that its difficult to anyone. Most people would enjoy eating shitty food all day, but many make the choice not to.

Rotfl. Yeah seriously.

But the fact still remains, you come out much cheaper buying food as opposed to eating fast food. I might spend 30 dollar at a restaurant on a friday night, but if im trying to conserve cash for the weekend, I can easily take 30 dollars to the supermarket and get:

-eggs
-bread
-milk
-sausage
-potatoes
-onions
-pasta
-tomato sauce/alfredo sauce

Still with 5-7 dollars left over. SPLURGEEEEEE.

lol whatever guy, fat people get coddled enough in america so i’m sure my sympathy will not be missed in the least. and if thinking fat people should make losing weight a high priority means that i’m on a high horse then so be it.

and just to touch on some of things you mentioned…

-who cares what’s tasty or not?! taste is obviously a luxury that a fat person shouldn’t be concerning themselves with imo.

-what does “pre-disposed to a poor metabolism” even supposed to mean? your metabolism is a result of your eating and lifestyle choices. fat people have fat kids bcuz they’re teaching their kids to be fat asses just like themselves not bcuz of any innate predispositions.

Well, I gotta say that I’m shocked at the responses to this thread. It’s like the half of you that get shit on in your real life because you sucked at sports, can’t get girlfriends, don’t shower, etc. went nuts on people who you actually think are lower than you.

What a bunch of hypocrites.
