Do you think MK9 will be in EVO 2012?

Also on top of the X-rays are not useful comment, X-rays can now be used in the middle of some block strings, (like Baraka, on Raiden)

gags how did this thread turn into a “my game is better than yours” argument? Those discussions are so idiotic and 1 sided. No game is the same.

I would love for MK to return to Evo. I think it would get a lot more entries than it did at EVO2k11. The online warriors would come out for sure. TTT2 probably won’t be out in America by then so you can count that out. I don’t see KOF or Skullgirls making it to EVO on the big stage anyway. I predict…

when do they normally announce the Evo lineup?

You really don’t understand how this game is played do you?

  1. High/ low mixups are worthless due to fuzzy guarding, MK9s mix ups come in the form of whether your opponent is going to do the block string, a low poke, go for a crossup, etc.

  2. How is a rush down character supposed to pressure if their block strings push someone back?

  3. X Ray is no where near as game breaking as Ultras are in SF4, the only time they’re worth using is if your opponent has breaker and they will win you the match. Otherwise you’re just burning up all of your meter that you’re probably gonna need for a breaker to use a move that only does somewhere between 30 and 40% damage. Every character in this game has combos that do more damage than their X Ray, its only advantage is that it’s unbreakerable.

  4. See point 3

  5. Scorpions hellfire can be avoided by jumping and if it whiffs it leaves him very unsafe and if you cant jump on reaction to Nightwolfs lightning than stop playing fighting games in general.

  6. They’re only invincible on start up and can be easily baited and sub and punished.

  7. And? Combos are just free damage, I don’t know if you’ve noticed but we’re long past the days of execution being everything in fighting games.

Didn’t realize people JUMPED IN or WAKEUP RUSHED CAGE.

:d::b: + FK FTW

Any Cage knows that even though X-Ray is all nice and stuff, Cage has no way around zoning other than EX Shadow Kick. Not to mention that anyone against Cage is trying to get AWAY from him, not toward him. Going toward a Cage is asking to get either kicked in the face or frame-trapped.

And by any Cage, I don’t mean me. I prefer the nice stylings of Skarlet or Freddy.

Basically, if your name is not Kung Lao, odds are you probably shouldn’t do an X-Ray because you won’t build bar fast enough to Breaker. ONLY moments to use X-Ray:

  • When you’re comboing into it (that means that if your X-Ray is a throw, you should never try it)
  • When it will win you the match

BTW, both of these are requirements. If it will win you the match but you’re not comboing into it, it will be a waste if it’s avoided. If you’re comboing into it but it won’t win you the match, then you’re just putting yourself at an instant meter disadvantage and giving meter to the opponent from the damage.

Now, in Cage’s case if you have the reflexes to punish a move with it (on reaction) and it will end the match (or the following combo, if you’re sure you won’t ever drop it) then go ahead.

X-Ray is more of a hassle than non-MK players like the salty dude earlier will probably ever understand. I play Skarlet. Her X-Ray scales ITSELF so badly it only does 29%. You REALLY think I would care for it at all? When instead I can have a super fast approach move with full armor and a high/low mixup followup that can lead to combos or cornering?

Of course you want the EX shadow kick. But landing Cage’s X-ray gives you the 40%, and you can easily make it ~55% PLUS reset to follow up. That’s nothing to scoff at, even if it leaves you on a meter deficit. If you land the X-ray, you will either always get the reset or the player will use their breaker after you’ve already done most of the damage, making your meter deficit way less important. Either way is nice. The whole point of having red kick is to get through zoning, but I wouldn’t mind having a massive, automatic life lead instead of meter lead. I mean think of it this way, you want your meter to have red kicks, and to prevent your opponent from doing combos. Is it REALLY that much worse to spend an extra bar to do an automatic 55%, vs breakering your opponent’s combo, which will sometimes only be around half of your damage?

And obviously people aren’t gonna try to rush down Cage like other characters, but are you really saying that not one decent player EVER jumps in on Cage? No one has EVER tried a mini-rush down? Match up strategies are guidelines, they’re not written in stone. People know it’s a bad idea to jump in on Ryu if he has either of his meters full, but it’s not as if no decent player in the world has ever been caught with a lp SRK > U1.

I totally agree that X-rays should be used sparingly, but there ARE times other than the specific condition you mentioned where it’s appropriate. If I’m Cage, last round and low on health, if I see an opening for X-ray I’m probably going for it. Yes I want my tools to get through zoning, but with such a long way to go, having meter is a moot point if you’re out of life and the match is over. And it’s not as if those red kicks don’t trade with most fireballs, meaning if you’re already low on health they’re not going to be as useful as they were before.

They have. But that’s because it was a SRK attempting to punish, FADC’d which allows for a hit confirm or safe escape if blocked. You can’t hit confirm a counter move, although you can punish EXTREMELY TELEGRAPHED moves, like a random Raiden torpedo (which doesn’t really happen often against good Raidens, although now that I remember doing that helped me win a midnight launch tournament in my local Gamestop against a Raiden spammer).

You’re right, and I did say that before. Last round, if it will win you the game, is the PERFECT time for an X-Ray. But most other times it really is a crap shoot. Especially because you can’t hit confirm into Cage’s X-Ray, and you have to bait the opponent or catch them off guard. I tend to knock down cage and crossup jump when they have X-Ray. 80% of the time they won’t just go for the kick anti-air, since they’re getting crossed up, and most times they try the X-Ray thinking I’ll actually punch them. It’s a case of a huge risk/huge reward for Cage.

Oh, it’ll be back. Too many people are still playing it.

I’m not sweating it.

I actually meant that if I was low on health in the last round, I might do a (well timed) x-ray to turn the momentum around. And yeah, it’s a crap shoot but my whole point is that when I’m about to be KO’d anyway, I need to take those risks. Red kicks don’t do me that much good if the damage I absorb knocks me out, and while I want a breaker the bottom line is I need to get some damage in to have a shot.

In the last round, I’ll take a situation where I have 10% health, no meter but my opponent’s also down to 10% vs me having 10% health, full meter and an opponent with 65%. If I’m Lui Kang in that scenario, I might even quickly combo into x-ray if the opponent’s going to have breaker. Yes I can do the same damage without meter, but I need to close the gap, and I’ll take the guaranteed damage vs my opponent using a breaker. The health gap becomes more important than meter when you’re close to losing the match, IMO.
