Do you think it's possible to become a top player with limited time?

Natural talents exist in many areas of life. I don’t see why it would be so wrong to assume a natural talent for fighting games would also exist. It doesn’t matter how many scrubs are out there using it as an excuse, it very well could exist.

of course they do, and thats why i deleted a whole paragraph i had on that, because in reference to this fighting game shit, we know that the most unhealthy, out of shape, couldnt out run a a 3 legged dog mofos can still wild the fuck out in greatness in this fighting game shit. unless you are talking some spiderman shit, or some savant level shit, for the most part there arent too many natural talents that would exceed someone who no matter how much time they put in, could not surpass them. thats fiction. yeah some people are smarter then others, and their memory is better then others, so they can catch on quick by remembering what to do, or being able to improvise and adapt quicker, but thats nothing you cannot teach yourself through experience.

i say this respectfully, but marn, yipes, jwong, floe, etc… are big out of shape motherfuckers who we would think would have terrible reactions, trouble executing with their bigger hands, trouble positioning themselves to comfortably execute from a sitting point on chair or ground, but they have excelled beyond those 50 pounds lighter, who put in 4 times more time practicing. thats all out of years of practice and desire to be good. they found their way, despite any physical weaknesses or oddities, and pounded competition into the dirt.

yes for something like football, you can have clear natural born talent above others, but fighting games hasnt proven that, that theory is applicable to us. top 8 isnt filled with a bunch of brad pitts, its a variety of all types. you just train and condition your body to learn something new, and it works. thats it. unless you are spiderman, i dont know what kind of natural talent would put you ahead of everyone else.

again, imo fgs are not rocket science. people approach it like that, and they frustrate themselves. fighting games are very clear on results. so when you suck, its very clear you suck, which is why most people suck. not because learning movesets, combos, matchups, and movement is like trying to understand a stephen hawking book, but because they are self defeated by something they go into feeling is already much more superior then them.

if anyones goal is to go from scrub to top 16 player at a major at least after a year, it is very reachable if you put in that work. that work doesnt have to be 8 hours a day, just that work. once you hit a certain barrier in fg’s, at least for me, everything just snaps into place anyways. i remember vividly when it happened. when i just got it, and it applied across the board. now there is not one game i cannot pick up and understand in 2 hours max if im drinking and jogging laps while learning the game.

mo drunk replies from jimbones. lol

yipes used to be skinny too

BTW, Jimmy, ArtVandelay, Pherai and eltrouble post are 150% the truth. IMO, they should be featured in the front page, or read by all the lurkers (or posters, of the SF4 and Mahhvel boards) of SRK.

People possess many different abilities, some of which could theoretically affect their ability to excel in fighting games. Things like, reaction speed, quick thinking, problem solving, abstract thought, and so on, are not things that rely on physical traits at all. I’m not trying to dissect fighters and how the mind plays them, I’m just saying that there can be many factors at work, and possibly working together, to make someone “a natural” at fighters.

Definitely don’t discredit the notion because you haven’t made the connection, or because some people are sore losers.

those games are different because they mainly require memorization: lose-retry-succeed. One modern platformer that captures the spirit of those games, plus it gets even more frustrating and harder, is Gianna Sisters. Produced by the same people who made that Mario spin-off in the late 80s for computers. Even then it was a difficult and hardcore platformer. The sequel was meant for those who played on console gamepad all their life. I dont think I have cursed more than in any other game. watching a playthrough on Youtube on Uberhardcore mode made me shiver. 1.20 hour of continuous gameplay, where if you lose even 1 life, you have to restart from the beginning of the game! Shmups are about the same.

While Real time games like fighters require also to be able to adapt to the situation. Training alone doesnt suffice. you have to play against human opponents to improve your adaptability and reaction. Not on random ranked matches, but multiple matches against the same person.

currently I have to spend every day totally 4.30 hours to go to work, back and forth. waking up also at 5.45 in the morning. that kills any energy left for anything else…
