Do you play with widescreen turned on or off?

I was wondering if you guys play with the widescreen turned on or off? I’ve been playing with it turned off, because I can’t get used to the widescreen, at least not yet. All my spacing is off. I’m sure I’ll get used to it in time, though. And is EVO going to use the widescreen format?

I prefer widescreen with HDTV and Fullscreen (well more like conpressed screen) with CRT. I play widescreen on my 32 inch HDTV at home. The bigger characters fit more naturally on an HDTV and I don’t really need the bit of extra viewing space you get with the original game. Most of the action happens on a certain part of the screen any ways.

Regular mode looks strange to me on HDTV’s. Makes the game look bootleg and out of date with the black hole side bars. I’m not good enough at Super Turbo for widescreen to mess with my spacing. I just mash buttons. Which the same can be said for regular TV’s. Widescreen on regular TV’s is just useless. It’s like playing Art of Fighting and all the characters are needlessly large.

Nah, I couldn’t stand widescreen. Spacing was also totally off, and the health bars and super meters felt like they were constantly in the way of everything. I turned that shit off and didn’t look back. Black bars don’t bother me at all.

I love the widescreen. No spacing problems here. I have some theory fighter opinions about bison’s headstop and reverse being better since he flies OFF the screen in WS mode. But I don’t get to play enough to try and work it out.

So…the whole hitbox and spacing thing is something I need to learn so I’m wondering. This is for all the pros out there. Does it really make a difference playing in wide screen?

off, couldn’t stand widescreen.

New game, new generation of hardware, new aspect ratio. Widescreen all the way. Altough it took some time to get the spacing back, but now the old 4:3 looks so outdated.

About tourneys, I think that as long as widescreen (HD)TVs are available, there should be no question about the mode in which tourneys are run. Then again, wouldn’t know about 4:3 CRTs. I’d try to avoid them for tourneys of next gen fighters anyway, cause people are used to playing on HDTVs at home, so forcing them back to 4:3 ratio/tiny letterbox doesn’t seem that fair. 22"-24" monitors are hella cheap nowdays and much easier to carry. Oh, and can have little to no input lag.

widescreen is great imo I cant go back to fs.

I play on 16:9 ratio. I can’t really do 4:3 anymore.

I prefer widescreen with HDMI connection. Once you get a 1080p TV with widescreen going back to a 480i rear projection monitor is brutal for next generation games. But older games, 3S, MvC2, CvS2, look much better on my SDTV than they do upscaled or upscan converted on my HDTV.

I wonder what will be the standard for EVO and other tournaments? Not just for ST:HDR even.

If 480i and lower games are used (3S/MvC2) you can’t use HDTVS at all and those games run FS.

And some combos in TvC are apparently only possible in FS mode and not WS. Which mode will be used for tournaments?

People are used to playing ST in FS, and most of the YouTube matches I’ve seen from SRK members are 4:3 and not 16:9. But the votes on here are slightly in favor of WS. Sirlin said that initially WS mode wasn’t even planned and was added on later.

When Brawl and VF:5 were played at EVO was WS or FS used?

I go back and forth, except when i’m on psn. Because of the lag i turn off ws mode 95% of the time. On XBL i usually turn it off if i’m going into a room full of good players. But yea, i def. notice spacing probs when playing in ws mode.

Didn’t even know you can turn the WS off

I turned it off once I found out you could, just to see what it was like, and much preferred the non-wide screen.

Why would widescreen mess up your spacing? it’s not like the characters are stretched to fit, they’re just bigger, its like sitting closer to the screen! Maybe it does for some but i was new to ST when i picked this up so luckily it hasn’t been an issue. I tried playing in 4:3 but didn’t find it helped in any way. its easier to see and react to things in widescreen cos its so much bigger

Yes I play WS on.

However, I am great considering changing. I am still having trouble with all the “jumpy-ness” that happens. With all the bright colors everywhere, it takes a moment for my eyes to catch up. (I.E. Seeing the first frames of Cammy’s HC.)

WS>>>>>>>>>>>4:3.

Seriously on an hdtv 40" or bigger I don’t know how the hell anyone could go back to 4:3 it looks so weird and unnatural to me.

I prefer widescreen on an HDTV and fullscreen on a regular TV. Since I use an HDTV, I picked widescreen.

I don’t think it has any real gameplay effect, and I play Bison - you can still see when he is doing the devil reverse, although most of him is offscreen, and people still hit me out of it just fine.

Depend what the TV system support, most of the new HDTV support WS, so 4:3 is too old, or a history…

I didn’t know you could go widescreen.

Is it an option in the 360 dashboard menu, or in one of the game options?

Wide for hdtv, 4:3 for non-hd. Keep it simple.
