I’m not touching my wallet until I’m sure online is working decently.
I have pre-ordered it as Deluxe Edition from PSN. It comes with the season pass if I am not mistaken
In light of the recent Beta I can safely say that I’ll grind it out. It’s feasible to win 200+ matches a week. Even if it was 150 by the time next year rolls around it’ll be 300,000+ Zenny. You could purchase everything in the game easily.
I think some of us need to support them with actual money so I’ll be buying a season pass. Besides I’m a stickler for costumes.
I’m a average sf player who works a lot so I just bought the season pass. If I do get plenty of zenny money over time I will use it on characters for season 2.
you already know how much FM characters will be? FM to zenny equation hasn’t been worked out has it? Do we already know how much FM will be earned with wins/loses/survival/single player ect? Its to early to make these claims, they could charge one million FM for each character for all we know.
What we know is each character will be 600 zenny (essentially 6 dollars) and at least one of their alt costumes will be 400 zenny (4 dollars). We can safely assume FM to zenny won’t be a 1to1 conversion but since we have no idea how much FM will be earned or how much things will cost in FM (could use a completely different scale) we have no clue how long any of the grind will take.
Apart from me not being a fan of season 1 DLCs, one of the reasons I won’t be grinding is also because Dark Souls 3 will be released just a month later and I will probably giving some time to that.
Same. heck I bought 3 copies of the game: 2 for PS4 (one of which was a collectors edition) and another for PC.
I have a strong feeling that they are gonna release yearly season passes for each year with new characters and costumes. So those who bought the season pass, Smart move cause all the zenny you earn this time could be used for season 2 costumes and characters
It realy depends on what’s unlockable with fightmoney. Capcom said all gameplay elements will be unlockable with in game money, costumes aren’t gameplay.
I realy want all the costumes but it’s not worth 29,99. If they’ll be available as a separate purchase for a decent price I will buy them each. If they’re not available seperate I will Think about buying the seasonpass and save my fightmoney for other unlockables, maybe Season 2 or Whatever.
My theory is get season pass , horde fight money all year for season 2
Or vice versa depending on the content pricing
I’m not spending a dime on any character unless it is Elena. I’ ll use fight money money to unlock characters. Two months between character releases should be enough time to accumulate fight money.
I’ll try to get everything in this game with fight money.
Unless a character that I really like comes to the game.
What season pass?
This whole optional DLC/Free Characters via “fight money” is a terrible idea.
Nobody is going to pay and at first you’ll rejoice that you get to unlock new characters for free, and pros will rack up the “fight money” very quickly.
However shitty players/casuals won’t be able to, and scrubs/casuals are the least likely to care about dlc characters.
So I get the rationale, that scrubs will be forced to pay, pros will be happy but I just think it’s backwards and won’t work.
This might mean an anemic roster for the game overall as Capcom realizes that people aren’t as lazy as they thought, that casuals don’t care about DLC and hardcore players who do play enough to unlock it for free.
I hate to be a pessimist but, I just don’t see it working out, and in the end I see a small roster compared to what your used to but that’s not necessarily a bad thing in my eyes.
19-25 is more than enough characters for me (if it get’s even that big).
Actually I forsee this whole fight money thing being dropped after the initial “DLC” and they just do normal DLC prices on characters and seasons.
Well they are already at 22 since the first 6 have already been announced. I think they will hit at least 28 so one more dlc season and I would be shocked if they didn’t make it to 40 by the games lifespan…
I do however agree with you tho, this model may back fire And everything could shut down if they don’t generate enough revenue after the first season.
I just don’t understand what Combofiend/Ono/whoever was thinking.
On the one hand it’s bold, and a bit a of a throwback being able to unlock characters like back in the day, but it was usually just a boss like in PowerStone or characters who were 99% copy/pastes from other games (MVC2). However here a tremendous amount of work goes into each model, moveset, gameplay balance, animation and so forth. To just give this work out for free… I don’t get it. It’s extremely risky and I don’t understand business wise how this makes sense. At all.
Hardcore players such as myself would be more than happy to pay, whatever the going rate for a DLC character is these days, whatevers charged in Killer Instinct or Mortal Kombat (5$ per character or discounted bundles but that’s a guess I don’t play or own those games).
We don’t mind paying it because we know it means they will keep making more DLC characters and support the game with balance patches, new stages, new costumes and so forth.
However, knowing I can unlock it for free, even I find myself hard pressed to pay a dime for anything. So they’ve lost my money and the money of the players who want the DLC characters the most, because we play the most, obviously.
Casuals don’t care. Certainly not about characters like Alex or Urien. They’ll pay 5$ or whatever to unlock Akuma when he’s announced, or maybe Sagat or something, but otherwise they won’t bother either and will either grind in single player or just forget about the game.
Honestly I’ve tried to wrap my head around this but simply draw a blank each time. Sure you’re making the hardcore players happy people like free things but it’s bad business and it’s not like people would be outraged or something if Capcom simply went with the old, proven models. Maybe they think that casual or not so good players will be forced to pay for the DLC characters because they can’t earn enough fight money… however that’s making one enormous assumption, that they give enough of a shit to do so, and I’d suggest that if they can’t be arsed to earn the characters through gameplay then the simple answer to that is ’ No.’
In todays gaming world one failure = Game Over. Even for giant publishers like Capcom (who nearly were Game Over until Sony stepped in. I really worry about the future of SF and it’s really sad that SFIV was almost not made, it was a huge success then SFV was almost not made, and Capcom probably the company with the largest amount of mega-successful IP next to oh I don’t know Nintendo has dug themselves into near bankruptcy with bad business decision after bad business decision…
Anyways… I also think the approach to balance is backwards ass as well but that’s another topic.
-edit- just as I suspected, the vast majority of people will just chose to grind it out. Can you blame them?
I will too, I only selected the “indivisually” option because I think it’s the far more sane business move…
Killer Instinct is way more poverty than SFV and it’s going on its 3rd Season.
There’s always ways to drum up money. In DOTA and KI they both had schemes where they would promise people something if they bought enough of a certain character or accessory. KI got the money they needed to give Shadow Jago a real moveset in 3 days and all they asked people to do was buy the character. They also got free KI GOLD for buying him. You could also buy KI Gold to help towards the goal if you already had Shadow Jago. Which of course some people purposely bought KI Gold just to add to the pot.
If anything people will be pissed off at how SUCCESSFUL this will be. LOL. Get ready to have to know 40+ matchups by Season 2019
I know that most people understand where I’m coming from. But just to give a simple and easy example that’s less wordy;
My most played game of the last 3 years is The Pinball Arcade. If you’re a fan of classic pinball from the 80’s and 90’s this game is a dream come true. They offer near perfect digital 3D recreations of the best pinball games ever made like Addams Family, Medieval Madness, Monster Bash, Twilight Zone, Dr. Who and so on ok. I’ve spent literally over 500 hours on this, easy, probably thousands of hours at this point 3 years in, and I’ve bought every single pinball machine, of which the initial release had 4, today there are over 65. So you do the math on that, at 5$ a pop (though Season 1 and 2 it was 2 for 5$, Season 3, 4, and 5 are 5$ each). The point is I’ve spent over 300$ on iOS, around 80$ on Xbox 360 and just bought all 5 Seasons on PS4 for 150$ (Seasons are 30$ discounted).
Now imagine if Farsight, the studio who makes the title, let you unlock tables for free the more you played. Uh… I’d have then spent 10$ then because I’d easily have unlocked all tables with plenty of “fight money” to spare. Farsight would be out of business, the model would have failed flat on it’s ass and they’dhave stopped making pinball machines 3 years ago. Instead of 67 and counting we’d be lucky to have 20. The hardcore fans like me who buy the monthly tables the day they come out, and there’s about 3-5,000 of us, we keep them afloat while older tables sell a few hundred, the more popular ones can sell 500-800 a month (judging by leaderboards).
Anyways.
We’ll see what happens and I hope I’m wrong but, if I had to guess I’d say this whole fight money thing will be an enormous disaster and that after the inital 6 DLC fighters the system is replaced with normal $ per character and season pass charges. If I had to guess I’d say that fight money is either done away with or used to unlock something else, like IDK maybe give away roms of the older SF’s or something.
But DevilJin they actually charge for DLC characters on KI. You pay money. You don’t just grind with Jago and Sabrewolf and then unlock the other 10 characters or whatever for free. Fight money makes zero sense business wise and IMO is a huge mistake. If they simply went with the KI model (or MK model?) then the game could be HUGELY successful with an enormous roster (though personally I’m not a fan of 40+ fighters in a game, but I’m not going to lie, in the SFV engine and graphics, I’d buy all 40 lol).
The difference between SFV and Pinball Arcade is that SFV still has skins that are cash only. If the past is any indicator, people will definitely drop money on those.

Nah it’ll be fine. KI could be played for FREE. There are people that still play the absolutely free version of KI where you just play one character that rotates every week. Some only buy 2 characters and just sit on those characters. Yet, that game is still getting a 3rd Season.
You have to pay 60 dollars (or whatever discount you find for the PC version) in order to start playing SFV. People want to play SFV so they will pay that up front. Which it’s obvious that more people are going to be buying and actively playing SFV than KI. What makes games like this successful is that there will be things that you have to buy that can ONLY be gained through Zenny/Real Money. Those will usually include premium costumes and accessories. These are things that casuals eat up like kids at a pizza party and they will want to have all the swag stuff for their characters.
DOTA/Counter Strike/LoL have all proven this to be effective. They are all games where you get all the content necessary for gameplay pretty much for free. Yet, they find a way to attract the casuals with flashy accessories that make them visually stand out from the pack. Plus anyone who is too lazy or doesn’t have the time to do all the quests to get the fight money for the free characters will most likely cave in and spend Zenny.
