i may be late joining in on this thread but i used to practice shaolin fut gar kung fu and a bit of lion dancing. the same “school” also taught muay thai and a bit of bjj, but i never touched the bjj stuff.
had a dab of karate and tae kwan do at the local community college too but it wasn’t for me
Dude are you black or asian? Because the japanese sn and liking of “asian” things is more forgiveable if you were asian.
Also kali and silat are the cool filipino fighting styles. I did arnes along with tkd and wrestling and boxing as a kid. Always felt i was being steve blackman
I probably looked like star wars kid
Maxx Going to chinese new years. Bah only good part of cny is red envelopes of money.
So many lol. Stupid chinese.
The reason silat, arnes, kali aren’t shown in mainstream. Is because the words karate, krav maga, kung fu, and Now “i train ufc bro” are what’s easily marketable
Want to learn a fighting style where you use open palm strikes that won’t break your hand? Learn kali
Steve Blackman huh, I remember he was dating the secretary of the property manager at the building me and my dad had our business on back on Singer Island. Needless to say I stopped hitting on her for a few days until I was sure that big ass nigga was gone.
I have no idea what you’re trying to say there. Unless that was a roundabout way of you calling me a weeaboo or something.
This is my first time seeing a Filipino martial art even though it was rushed since Guro Inosanto was pressed for time. It would be cool to see more stuff like that.
It would actually be cool to see other countries indigenous martial arts just to see what they look like.
So, wrestling season has come to a close. I don’t know how I feel about it honestly. I know there are a few kids who could really make a name for themselves if they were willing to continue down the path. I had a “rolling fest” for the last day of practice where we grappled without wrestling rules (so subs and chokes were aloud). Man oh man was that fun. I got to give these kids one last lesson before they left which was: Don’t fuck with the old folks, because they can (and always will) bust your ass, lol. But seriously it was pretty cool. The 70lb kids has really come along and I would love to see him enter some Judo tourneys, but he said he wants to relax over the spring and summer. Oh well, I know the parents were super supportive, which was nice. I know it did get tiring hearing from them every other night though (hey sometimes I just wanna chill and play Tekken). But all in all it was a good season.
Since I am moving to Chicago in fall of this year I won’t be back to train these kids, but I like to think I made somewhat of a difference. The simple fact that I was able to reach some of thee kids and actually have them enjoy wrestling was sooooo awesome. I was at a point to where the kids were asking me to help them work on their ground game and how to improve standup grappling.
I now understand what they mean by a “rewarding experience”.
Having a weapon, e.g. a knife, changes everything. When in a fight, and it gets close, it turns into a struggle to get your weapon free to kill them while at the same time stopping their weapon from stabbing you.
Here’s a longer video, but they have a ton more:
at 0:55 the fighting highlights start. Notice how fast the fights are over because of weapons.
at 5:20 the knife comes out in a few seconds after they go to the ground.
at 7:50 turn being vulnerable into being dangerous.
