King of the hill. God, having that five minute firefight 3 rolls in only to get taken down and controled and subbed within 30 seconds by the really big guy.
Do you have access to sandbags dude? These kids probably don’t know what it’s like to manuever any amount of mass. Sandbags are an excellent object to lift, carry, slam, sprint with, and learn movement on.
@dab00g, @anglepalm, @maxx, @RockB: So as far as training drills go. We do king of the hill twice a week. Usually I start off with them doing 25 laps to warm up, we stretch then we do shuffle but I yell out different exercises randomly and that usually will last for a while. I have them do wall sits a lot and back bridges. The biggest hurdle is the kids are lazy. One kid said he can’t do workouts because his doctor said he can’t do anything on his knee. So of course I say sit out and get me a doctors note. Well yesterday I get to the school and I see one of the kids running out of the wrestling room telling me that said kid for real hurt his knee. Apparently he and another kid were wrestling and he for real hurt his knee. Of course I am pissed because they shouldn’t have been wrestling to begin with (its against the rules/school policy if I am not present) and this kid obviously had been lying about his knee to get out of workouts. So of course I gotta get him the proper care and what not. but I was really salty because the boxer kid actually for real sprained his ankle a couple of practices ago, but lied about it being messed up. I really wanted kid to not get hurt because his conditioning is insane and he has all the building blocks in place to be a great wrestler/fighter. So I had to drop out of the invitational tomorrow because it takes 5+ kids to make a team and my team had been reduced back to two (some of the other kids have been skipping practice).
So with the two kids I had yesterday, we went through some drills and I had to tell them to quit trying to lock up like it is WWE, and quit letting me grab you. I had to punish one because he was trying to show off in front of some cheerleaders who were watching. So me and him rolled. The kid tried to go full retard on me, so I had to embarass him. the funny thing is that I didn’t even wrestle, I just did Judo moves. I caught dude in a tomo nagi, he tried to flip out which I knew he would do, so I grabbed his leg thus making him look super extra. Dude elbowed me so I did a Kata Guruma (basically a fireman’s carry). And then when we were on the ground, he kept trying to choke me. So that’s when I really let him have it. I got dude in so many submission moves, I even surprised myself. I guess this is the tough love these inner city youth need. They just need to get their asses kicked on a consistent basis, lol.
I will say this, there is a kid on the team that is 70lbs. I can tell he is kind of scared as to what to do, but I told him to get mad whenever he is on the mat. And I can see the progress. So I guess after this weird ranting story, I am trying to say that it is nice seeing that some of the kids are actually learning what you are teaching. On Monday I have a whole new workout planned, and after talking with @Maxx I have decided to make weight lifting mandatory. I will schedule 4 weight training sessions a week along with practices. Heck i even have individual regiments for each of the kids.
Also your kids need to get owned on a consistent basis. You always have to have the kids Be humble and willing to learn and have the hunger to win, but also the ability comeback from a loss better.
Kid threw an elbow on just a regular session. When he meets up with a kid trying to take his soul in front of people and girls and his parents. Then what.
Kids need to learn that they aren’t invincible and there are always better people. The boxer kid probably has the best work ethic because he knows what it’s like to get owned and will improve to get better.
If the school has a martial arts club, anime club, find out. Ask dudes in water polo. See if you can recruit kids from other sports
A lot of them dudes probably thought they were the shit. Until they bumped into you dude.
If they want to spar and grapple. Try to find an affordable mma gym close the nogi classes and wrestling classes at mma gyms usually run cheaper than at a local wrestling club/bjj school/Judo school.
But inner city just makes me think your niglets be in a situation.
well the school is like 98% black in a not so good neighborhood and what not. Actually there are guys coming through trying to wrestle the little guys, but when I come in and say if they wrestle they have to wrestle me, they bitch up. I have a rule that when I ask the kids a question and they respond “huh?” then its automatic 10 pushups. I noticed that a lot of the kids are used to saying huh when they are asked something out of habit… Its time to break that habit, lol. I wish it were that easy to just train them and be done, but there is so much baggage that is brought to school due to less that ideal home lives that I have to approach it a bit differently than if I were to do my Judo club or something. I know when to let up when we wrestle, mainly its when they are working on a technique and I am walking them through it as we wrestle.
Yeah Boxer kid is tough and just all around a good kid. Asking me to show him more and wanting to lift with me is cool.
But like you said a big thing is that these kids think they are the shit from seeing fights on worldstar, but in reality they would not last a second against a lot of people out there. I know If any student stepped to me, they would get broke… plain and simple.
i regret not joining wrestling while in high school. i was more into baseball then.
while i was at Gracie, one of the senior instructors had a wrestling background, and would incorporate some elements during classes. and its even worse at my current gym. the instructors don’t have real wrestling backgrounds, but have picked up methods during their training, and are passing them down to us.
it would have been nice to gain some first-hand knowledge.
oh and as far as martial arts go, i fucked my left shoulder/collarbone up like 2 months ago getting uchimata’d so i took 2-3 weeks off to let the bruise/swelling go down…and of course within 2 sessions, my other shoulder gets fucked even worse in the exact same manner.
Yea Escrima. Make that weapon the center of the universe in a struggle.
It’s funny how it really changes things given it’s a knife coming at your head and not just a hand.
I learned something last night during Jiu Jitsu (Hawaiian):
Rear naked choke is assault with a deadly weapon because you’re choking with two arms.
If you choke with your right arm, and place your palm on the back of your head for leverage, it’s no longer legally a felony because you’re using one arm, it is equally effective at choking someone, and you have your other hand free to fend off another opponent.
speaking of weapons, i firmly believe that firearms should be fully incorporated into certain martial arts systems.
and not just defense against it, but learning weapon retention as well as tactical deployment/shooting, especially since more and more people are concealed/carry.
i’m pretty competent with my .380 in concealed scenarios, but that’s because i have LEO friends who have worked with me, plus my current head instructor is himself an LEO
currently, most people do not have access to this unless you are an LEO, military, or sign up for private courses.
i disagree…most martial arts already have some kind of weapons disarmament training…but if you push it more…you dont come off as a self defense anymore. it can def turn alot of people off from the art.
you’re right, a lot of programs do, particularly in terms of disarmament.
i was speaking more towards the “offensive” uses (for lack of a better term). what you do when someone tries to wrestle it from you, when someone is rushing you with a knife, how to circumvent the “21 foot” rule when it comes to knives (attacker) vs. guns (you), etc.
but you are also right in that that’s not necessarily why people sign up for martial arts classes. especially purists.
i’m not very familiar with what they teach in Krav Maga. i wonder if any of that is covered?
