Do YOU do any Martial Arts?

laughs I’m only a white belt still. Still got a long way to go.

It’s cool man. I am a white belt in Karate. It’s been a long time since I have donned a white belt, feels weird, lol.

hehehe.

I want to see this.

You know what tkd footwork is? Bouncing a lot and switching stances and being quick.

Just don’t be flat footed, bounce on the balls of your feet, and become faster

I’ve got to start doing some martial arts. Any tips on doing so on a time budget? Which would be a good one to start with? I’ve only done Eishen-Ryu Iaido for a short period of time, but I don’t want to learn a weapon art. I’m already starting a work out routine and getting my diet straight. I’m basically trying to empower my body and mind to become the man I want to be. Strong, disciplined and at peace with myself.

Any one go through this later in life than usual?

Thanks!

that’s the thing. I’m extremely flat footed and slow. So bouncing on the balls of my feet. What are good drills for that? As far as switching stances that would help since I’m a natural south paw and am learning to fight regular.

honestly I didnt start judo until I was about 21. It saved my life because I was going nowhere fast. It’s never too late to start. I say just look around and see what your city has to offer in terms if martial arts. And if they are teaching the principles that you value.

Hyper Kid’s last remark (“principles that you value”) is particularly important! Sadly, there are schools out there that are run as only a mildly more sedate version of the Cobra Kai schools in “The Karate Kid” (Original)… or else tolerate a few students that behave like that. I have a permanent injury in one foot (joined by another one in the other foot later on, through causes I can’t quite determine) due to such a student at one place doing extremely unsafe things to me.

Don’t be in a rush to join just any school you find. Ensure the instructor has a good philosophy, and that any students you get paired up with (if the school even does this sort of thing, not all do) are likewise there to learn rather than kick your ass and get away with it. Even a class or two a week can help if you find the right place, if it’s one with a mindset of teaching you practical defense and the right mindset behind it. If the instructor is there to brag about what a badass he is and show off his tournament trophies, you may wish to look elsewhere. There is a world of difference between learning practical defense and being someone’s punching bag to pad their ego, however. Definitely observe and ask questions before forking over any money.

Paying for a bad school means you’re paying to get yourself seriously hurt (note that even good schools may leave you a little hurt from time to time, it’s an inherent risk when you’re spending 30 minutes to 2 hours per session learning how to hit people), paying to not learn anything about proper defense skills (it’s not just striking; learning how to keep your eyes open, assess common ploys that lead up to an assault, etc. are important too), not learn about the possible legal ramifications of any fights you wind up in, and not accomplish much for your own benefit. Even if it’s the only school in town, don’t go to a place like that. It’s never worth it. Make sure your precious time and money go to good teaching.

Good luck with whatever you do, though. There are risks and expenses in this kind of training, but the health benefits and psychological improvements can be worth it.

I miss Karate. I wish I wasn’t so poor. Thankfully I still remember the techniques.

Bad sparring partners lead to you getting hurt

Like a week or so ago i got this guy in an armbar. Guy lifted me up and dropped me on my head. I got knocked a little loopy, but he dislocated his own shoulder because “i don’t tap ever bro”.

You got these guys in gyms everywhere, the ones who get owned never comeback because to them the gym record is everything.

They only want to learn the cool moves and are disrespectful to everybody.

This is the guy who attacks your sprained wrist when you say “my wrist is wrapped because i sprained it”

The guy who crossfaces you because “sorry dude”

Fuck that guy.

You choke his ass out, you kick him right in the sternum with a 75% backick to let him know.

If you don’t assert yourself, you end up being reemed by the guy

That is real talk. I had a few guys like that. I always played cool and would tell them to chill out. But they have that shitty mma mentality where you just beat people up and that’s it. I had to join a place where the instructor and students left their egos at the door. Funny enough where I train now. The instructor reminds me of an old boxing coach. I appreciate him expecting me to train after the first day and actually being cool with me not knowing anything.

I try to avoid those youtube martial art A VS martial art B, but these kids did well

No surprise the fighter with the better footwork comes through as the victor.

I have come across those “alpha badasses” in both boxing and BJJ. To me the funniest ones are the huge roided out guys who are so overdeveloped that they can’t throw a decent punch or have the speed to really hit anyone hard. While rolling I had a guy in a full triangle and he decided to pick me up and try and slam me on my head (this was just free sparring not a comp or anything) so I lifted my head up and took the force on my shoulders, and I didn’t let go until just before he passed out. He laid on the matt wheezing for a long time, but it was his own doing. You shouldn’t try and hurt one of your teammates when there is nothing on the line but your own pride. Besides that this isn’t high school or college, and some people need their bodies to work, so you can really hurt someone’s ability to provide for themselves with those kinds of shenanigans.

Honestly those guys in muay thai and bjj just bad attitudes so we get told go hard on the dochebags

Really if you comeback after getting an ass kicking you show your want to learn. Those guys get more respect than “bro you will tap”

They get put out and don’t comeback because their manhood was taken in their caveman brain. Lol

anytime someone puts god into a martial arts school i say suspect as fuck.

The strange part is these ‘alpha badasses’ do not seem to particularly care what style they learn (or don’t learn; some of them seem to just show up for the sparring). J-ride, you mention BJJ and Muay Thai (the latter of which I expect is particularly attractive due to its reputation), but it’s not just those forms that bring in the nutjobs. My foot injury happened in an Aikido school of all places, while I was still a child. Some guy in his 30s-40s thought it’d be awesome to pick me up overhead and smash me to the ground, pretty contrary to the ‘soft philosophy’ behind the style. …Not that I believe, in hindsight, he was doing anything Aikido-related in the first place. He was not invited back for any future classes.

So don’t let your guard down just because you find a school teaching styles with fairly gentle reputations. Not everyone who goes to said school agrees with those philosophies. Some of them are there to dish out pain, and “make you tap, bro” as dab00g put it. My strongest advice would be to simply watch one training session before joining, so you can identify any problem students/teachers before you give them permission to punch, kick, grab, and throw you.

King9999: Presuming you have the open space for it, nothing precludes practicing alone. It’s not as good as an actual learning environment with someone to work with and correct any mistakes you’re making… but it’s something. This is particularly nice for ‘environmental defense’ things like rolls/break-falls, which have come in handy for me outside of fights from time to time.

At any rate, I am pleased to see most of this thread has been pretty level-headed. Not too many people acting all “Pfft, I’d take on Bruce Lee, Ali, Mike Tyson, a grizzly bear, three apes, and Zombie Guan Yu all at once… and win” from what I’ve seen in the last page or two. That’s very good to see.

Yeh, they look rather cult-ish.

Christian values karate

Super suspect

Irish boxing gyms with a crucifix on the wall no biggie to me though

If anyone asks you “are you Protestant of Catholic?”, how do you respond?

Or worse, who’s your favourite football team…
