Do YOU do any Martial Arts?

ata…man…there are mcdojos…and then there is ata. them niggas is a pyramid scheme disguised as a martial arts school. when a ata member opens a school their teacher who gave them their black belt gets a slice. like really nigga? plus i think they gotta pay the association too. everyone gettin a cut.

“A gun outdoes years of martial arts training in a split second. Like I’ve said many times before, it is important to differentiate between movies and reality. The hero in movies may be able to knock the gun off his opponent and save the day, but in real life – probably that is not the case.”

i aignt listening to him…he does wushu lol.

Lol my school was wtf for tkd and i got my blackbelt at 16 after 9 years of getting brutalized by my strict ass korean instructors

We did full contact sparring, and yeah he liked having us do punching and other stuff beyond 720 spin kicks.

Lol our demo team was 3 dudes, the rest of us were just in tournaments and were told to kick people as hard as we could and to block.

So much tkd with the hands down and bouncing

Spinning back kick, sidekick, and roundhouses bros.

I did boxing too as a kid and wrestled from 10-15 years old.

Now i do muay thai and grappling. Yeah

So there is all that. The way of the martial artist is focus and discipline and always improving yourself.[/miyagi]

niggas catch feelings over styles battles. i dunno how we are still doing the this style sucks or this style sucks. niggas in 2,000 years aignt learned fuckin shit.

Wado Ryu and ofcourse Karaoke

Well where I am training at, it’s an old black guy who is our instructor. You can tell he isn’t into the point sparring thing except maybe for the kids. The first mat drill that he had me do was: jab, cross, hook, uppercut, then block attacks (he liked switching up the angles and everything which was nice). He told me that he sees how I really torque my hips when I punch which gives me good power (thanks to my Judo training).

I was never really a fan of point sparring. I guess I can see it for sport comp, but for self defense it basically forces you to create bad habits. Where I used to train, my teacher was really big on his black belt students, so when we would spar I knew aI could beat them but I also knew showing up his students meant hell for me. Needless to say, I ended up leaving there (just wasn’t fun and the atmosphere was terrible).

I like where I am training now, because it is so low key and I like the old school mentality that the instructor has about hard work and not just letting you slip by with mediocre work.

And on the which style is better. I am surprised people are still on that. I guess for me I respect all styles and am genuinely interested in where they come from and what they encompass.

I know I have two karate schools near me that I am thinking about joining. I already checked one out but I have to check out the other one. Here are the two schools.

Since I’ve been out of the martial arts loop for years, what do y’all think?

im pretty good with a bo-staff

Damn son. That Seichou Karate club is expensive, lol. I would just sit in on both and speak with the instructors about ther mission and what not and go from there. it’s really the one you feel the most comfortable with. But I’d probably lean towards Kazoku but there really isn’t enough info.

I did check out the Seichou school last summer and it was pricey but what do you expect from karate schools in Northern Virginia. LOL!!! What intrigued me about the Seichou school is that the sensei’s martial arts background is Kyokushin so his sparring is full contact. I’ll see if I can get to Kazoku this friday.

I do Shinshinkai Karate. When things get tough, I flex all my back muscles because I am the strongest creature on the earth. =)

I practice Kendo (Nidan), Iaido (Shodan), Aikido (Ikkyu), and Kenpo Karate (no belt).

My grandfather and uncle trained me in Karate so there was no belt system… though, I have sparred well with brown belts.

Kyokushin is tough, but training in that way you will become a very durable martial artist. Also you may want to check out if there are martial art classes in your local college. I know there was a community college that had a great Judo class, I joined and it was like $45 a quarter (3-4 months). What was so great about it is that I could practice at his dojo as well at the college for no extra cost. So I got to train 4-5 days a week. So those are some options as well.

You know, I remember years ago University of Maryland having a Shotokan club. I have to look into that again. And I may be going to Prince George’s Community College next month so I can check with them also.

Heck yeah man. Like I ended up joining the Judo team at my city’s community college and actually competed on the collegiate circuit. I got to face IU, Purdue, OSU and others. It was a good time.

So I am officially a member of the Strike Force Karate team (God’s Dominion). I decided to enter the Judo tournament at the 2k14 Arnold Classic (anyone who plans on going should get at me so we can meet up).

Here is my school patch.

My second day of class, the students were asked to do a demonstration. Needless to say it was funny seeing my bulky ass trying to do katas with the little kids. Either way I am excited to begin training for this tourney. Kind of nervous, but it’s all good I have a different outlook on how I want to develop my judo game. The first thing is build up better balance, and power to weight ratio, as well as dropping a good 50lbs to get in the light heavyweight/heavyweight division my bod can’t handle super heavyweight anymore).

TKD and BJJ for me.

Good stuff man. Any advice for building up good tkd footwork?

I’m too old. Quitting everything. Injuries don’t heal like they used to. Punching a tree in half then getting deep cuts or punching rocks and getting broken bones is pointless now that my healing isn’t as abnormally fast as it used to be. Coming in to work with servers when you can barely move and control your hand is a bitch and I’m too lazy to finish my voice recognition bot.
