OK I’m going to offer my criticsm, hope it doesn’t sting too much:
Well I’m sure I don’t need to say it, but you played pretty badly in that match. For starters, you had several chances to punish and never hit with anything harder than a throw. When you get that opening with Dudley you have to nail your combo into EX MGB to start your offence.
In terms of zoning and spacing, you’ve misjudged the space you need to fight Balrog from, which is just outside of his cr.HK range. You ate at least 3 from my count which you cannot afford to do. The way I play this matchup is to dance back and forth from this range, trying to bait Rog into throwing it out. If he whiffs it, it’s Stand HK xx EX MGB -> Ender or you can just use your Stand HP to counter hit from this range too. Sometimes you will eat a sweep whilst trying to bait it, but you were just plain standing in the wrong place and making it easy for your opponent.
On Rog’s Wakeup, you only had one real chance to mix him up and you chose Overhead, which he Headbutted. Everyone plays differently so it’s hard to criticise here, but personally against Rog, I will always start pressuring with cr.LK, Stand MK xx LP MGB, Option Selected with a Sweep (so cr.LK, cr.MK + cr.HK xx LP MGB). If he blocks, you are safe, if he dashes backwards, you sweep him and if he blocks high, you combo him. Best of all if he tries to reverse with heabutt, the cr.LK recovers fast enough to block it and you can then punish with a Stand HK combo. I pretty much do this over and over until I have “trained” my opponent to block low, then I might throw in the overhead.
You did alright with the dash punches though. One round you got killed by them, but you smartened up quickly. Generally, I would say that you should block high against the Dash Punches. Yes you can be knocked down, but it’s prefferable than eating the overhead -> headbutt combo.
Thanks brainpipe for the great advice. I struggle with jump ins alot cos I’m used to doing c.hp with sakura. COmes out in 4 frames and I had all day to do it cos she was already crouching and she is small. With Dudley I have to either press b+mk or do the c.hp early. Also I’m thinking should I duck under it, fa or cross counter. He has soo much stuff and I was hoping after a while it’ll all become second nature. In the end most times I end up just blocking cos I was thinking about it too much and the jump in is already complete lol. You are right about everything though. Thanks again
Thanks for the advice. I know I played pretty badly, and one of the things I need to work on is how to properly punish whiffed attacks. If I can do that one thing, my game will improve significantly.
OK watching this video and the previous one you posted, you need to work big time on three key areas.
First off - punishment. Dude your punishment is terrible, and you need to work on that right away. Hit up training mode for an hour or more a day and work on:
Stand HK xx HP Jet Uppercut
Stand HK xx EX MGB
cr.LP x 2, Stand HK xx EX MGB
Kidney Blow, cr.LP x 2, Stand HK xx EX MGB
cr.LK, cr.LP, Stand HK xx EX MGB
Dart Shot, cr.LP x 2, Stand HK, EX MGB
Dudley’s biggest strength is that he can deal incredible damage from even a small opening and you just do not utilise it in your play. If you have trouble performing the combos mentioned above, Dudley is not the character for you. You need those combos (or similar) on tap and you need to be able to execute them anytime and under pressure. You kept doing cr.LP, cr.MP xx EX MGB, which does not combo… cut that habbit OUT!
Second up: Pressure. There were a number of times when you had the opponent in the corner, or near to it and you backed off. BIG no-no. Dudley is a boxer, and any good boxer wants their opponent up againt the ropes with no way out. You need to learn the art of corner trapping the opponent and keeping them stuck there. This doesn’t mean you have to be right up in their face… sometimes you can be a couple of steps away, but you need to control the fight so that the opponent feels the pressure and is stuck in the corner.
Third: Stand your ground. You move back too often and are willing to let the opponent take the initiative. Learn to be able to stand on the spot and stop your opponent getting in on you. Against Ibuki, if she slides, it’s a free combo. If she jumps, you can AA her. That leaves her to zone you with cr.MP and similar, and against those you have cr.MP, Stand Fierce and Stand HK.
Believe it or not, I’m not trying to combo cr. MP into EX MGB. I know that doesn’t work, but the problem is I press the buttons too fast. So, instead of cr. MP xx LP MGB, I end up with EX MGB instead.
If you know it is guaranteed, and you don;t need to hit confirm, Dudley should be regularly landing around 400dmg punishment combos even with no meter.
For things like a whiffed SRK: f+MK > st.HK xx LP SRK > HP SRK or just f+MK > st.HK xx HP SRK dependent on the character is a must to learn, including the correct timings for those punishments against different moves.
You also MUST MUST MUST be able to do cr.LK > cr.LP > st.HK xx Jet Upper/Ducking Uppercut/EX Machine Gun Blow dependent on various different situations.
at around 2:52:08 of that video Dudley did an ex mgb straight into ultra midscreen, how is that possible? or is just something character specific for Seth?
That Dudley player was called “Dainawa.” His counter poking game is pretty buff, buy boy to take on Sagat WITHOUT using Rolling Thunder is madness! That Ultra completely shuts down his Tiger Shot game.
Maybe someone can cut out his footage and put it on YouTube? There’s a dearth of good Dudley videos on YouTube sadly.
It works on some characters.I know it works on Guy and Balrog, but then again i only tested it on Guy Balrog and Adon, and on Adon didn’t work, and no, i do not need information on what characters it works for my matchups because i don’t use Corkscrew Cross lol.
You can do this against all characters but you just need to delay your button press a bit after the second forward to allow Dudley to inch forward a bit.
it might be “dainama.” it’s hard to see because of the font in that stream, but dainama was a good 3S dudley from a few years ago who used the same colour so it seems plausible.
I am no pro Dudley, but I have taken to only using RT for the honda match up to punish headbutts. Against the fireballs that I want to get through most (Dhalsim/Guile), RT generally does not work. Against fireballs that are like Ryu or Sagat’s, I prefer to have them feeling safe with projectiles, so that I can sneak in more ducking uppers/straights and max range jump ins throughout the match. Baiting and punishing badly spaced fireballs is a lot easier than trying to footsie up close with Ryu, and Sagats tend to turn up the tiger knee pressure when they can’t rely on tiger shots. Having RT makes characters like Sagat play much less predictably to me. I also always like having the comboability on hand for U2 in any match.
But you are completely right about needing more good Dudley players on youtube. I am almost shocked at the complete lack of people using this character in tournaments considering how popular he is as a character.
I’d also like to point out for those that might watch that video and have read the thread I made about FADC with Dudley, He clutched out that win against that Sagat because he kept his eye open for the possibility of an EX upper xx FADC when it mattered. Just because Dudley has such great meterless potential doesn’t mean that stocking three bars for EX upper xx FADC ultra isn’t a very strong, safe option when the health pools get low.
