Different types of Comic Covers and Cards

Can someone tell me the names of the fancy comic covers and different types of fancy cards have, like “aluminium”, “chrome”, “hologram” or are there no official names for these?

I’m just looking to narrow my search on ebay for these types of cards and comics.

I think you basically have it. I don’t remember if comics ever had aluminum covers. Back when I was a kid, we called them “foil” covers. (Like Silver Surfer #50 for example.) Chrome covers might have been called “chromium” covers. I think there were also “holofoil” and “holografx” covers but I don’t remember what those looked like.

My favorite gimmick cover was the die-cut cover. If there’s anything that summarized the '90s more than a die-cut cover, I can’t think of it. I mean, c’mon! Even the name of the gimmick could have been a perfect name for a random Image superhero - all of those guys had names that were compounds of two threatening-sounding words. Dudes like Warblade, Ripclaw, Deathblow, Bloodwulf, Badrock, Shadowhawk. You can’t deny that a character named Die-Cut would fit perfectly right up there with Deathkill and Cyberclaw on a team called the Poison Berries.

I think I have a retro comic book idea I gotta work on now. Sano, you wanna draw this bad boy?

heh nice reply, you’re right about the foil cover. I remember the die-cuts from the 90’s.

I dunno man I get the feeling that the entire thing will be making fun of me somehow but I won’t be smart enough to get it. “Wow Zephyranthes this Fano guy is such a loser, DAMN!”

Last I know they were called Holofoils. Udon was releasing them for the Street Fighter comics but they stopped because they had problems with the company that handled them.

Yeah there was a yellow Wolverine cover that had 3 scratch holes in it, like Wolverine actually clawed the cover. Pretty funny now when you think about it.

Haha, I remember all those crazy covers, no wonder why DC and Marvel almost went bankrupt in the 90s.

Wolverine #50 : aka the return of the yellow and blue costume.
