Didn’t they work out of a print shop? Someone local get to the bottom of this because I want a MAS box.
It was a family in a trailer as best I understood. Dad did the soldering, mom took the orders, and Anthony the son posted on SRK and got grief. Yes I am bitter that people gave him crap.
Yeah. I was asked to do stuff with a MAS stick, and the screws that hold the bottom panel into place are driven into end grain which made me cringe a bit when I saw it.
I expect that people like that MAS sticks are big and heavy though.
MAS never did Super Wiring.
Uglier than Gummo’s.
Laugh.
This is why MAS has gone.
Back in the day, I’m completely unaware of anyone coming anywhere close to MAS’s level of excellence and reliability. Now that professional companies and (more?) informed hobbiests are moving into this space that MAS to my knowledge pretty much single-handedly built out, there probably are newer and better (or different) options. I’ve had about 18 MAS sticks over the years (still have 8 here, I think), and they’ve all been top tier. The only problems I’ve ever had were when Happ fucked up p360 manufacturing (RIP WICO), and that’s clearly not on MAS.
Having traveled the country filming videos from 2003- … 2008 or so, MAS sticks pretty much brought us the modern tournament scene on the joystick side of the equation. The dog-eared Seattle sticks were kind of legendary, and anybody who has seen those should be pretty impressed at stick durability. As regards the bottom panels: I think their blueprint was designed before people expected to travel with their sticks - my own 18 bottoms have been fine.
You’re expected to bypass and be better than pioneers. That doesn’t mean that they weren’t awesome. And MAS is hands down top tier legendary. If you enjoy Evo, you should give MAS its proper dues.
I’m not surprised if MAS or any American styled arcade sticks fade away, it’s been like that for over a decade during the release of the Dreamcast and arcades all dying in North America.
American game developers/companies are to blame as well since most of them moved over to home consoles and completely out of the genre while Japan developed games for both arcades and home consoles. I don’t think I’ve seen anyone use the PDP MK9 Tournament FightStick at any locals or tourneys.
Back to the topic, the only time I could appreciate MAS/SFAC/American styled sticks are playing classic arcade games like X-Men, Bucky 'O Hare, Simpsons and others back when I was 7 years old in the early 90’s. Late 90’s, I converted over to Japanese layout and parts due to the arcade scene evolving to Japanese cabs in Toronto. Concave push buttons were great for fighters but when you’re playing side scrolling beat 'em ups, they were a pain for bonus stages.
Soo anybody know where I can get one? ps2 specifically. I seen a few on ebay but always get outbid.
This is mostly due to the shitty button layout. Yes, it was the classic layout that you found on many MK1 cabinets, but that doesn’t validate it as a well-designed layout. The X-shape was awkward, and the button spacing was excessive, alongside the fact that there hasn’t been a decent American stick made since the original Wico360s.
Arcade Shock sells them although not sure if they sell the PS2 version.
My MAS took a flight of metal stairs in my old apartment building and a 27" CRT TV falling on it… Shit still worked.
MAS is amazing.
I have a ps2 8 button convex mas system stick laying around. Anyone interested just PM me.
They do sell the PS2 version but it’s a mix of HAPP and Sanwa parts which to me doesn’t make sense. It’s a HAPP stick as in new HAPP without the good cherry microswitches and then 30mm Sanwa buttons. You may still be able to find old MAS sticks elsewhere with all HAPP parts, maybe even old HAPP comps with cherry microswitches.
Doesn’t the iL Euro buttons still use cherry microswitches?!?
Note arcadeshock somehow obtained more stock of these. Including PS3/Xbox360
Yes. IL is the modern day equivalent of old HAPP. Cherry microswitches for the joysticks and pushbuttons.
MAS = Made American Strong
AMERICA! Fuck that lolipop shit.
Yeah, I thought so since it comes standard in the PDP Klassic stick while the PDP MK TE stick doesn’t have them. I’d swap out the Happ Comp stick in both for an iL Euro stick but I’m too lazy especially in the Klassic stick since that’s a PITA (no internal storage aka latch).
Ok…
I’ve had the classic MK stick for both consoles and it isn’t that hard to get at the internals to swap out the HAPP parts for IL.
Well, like I said…I’ve been lazy to do it, hehe!
ironic considering HAPP parts started going to shit when they relocated manufacturing plants to China.
