Dhalsim's Matchups

Instead of focus backdash the buttslam you can just release focus and crumple him

Or, backdash when he’s in recovery if he lands behind you.

What are your thoughts on the Adon match? I haven’t played it too much, but on paper I wonder if it isn’t Sim’s worst in the entire game (unless there’s some match breaking tactic I’m unaware of). Here’s my rationale, or rather Sabin’s actually. I got that podcast of his from vanilla that was recommended to me. And in explaning why Rufus was so bad, he was saying the 2 things that make a character hard for sim are the ability to change jump trajectories (to get in) and the ability to do big damage once in. Hence Rufus was the poster child for bad Sim match. But, in theory, wouldn’t Adon be just as bad if not worse? Sooo many ways to change jump angle, and lots of dirty mixups and options inside.

Anyway, I wanted to put that out there and see if anyone w/ some more experience in the matchup had any good tricks to keep in mind.

Conversely, here’s what Adon mains are posting as to how to combat Sim, though it’s very limited, like our own Sim vs Adon thread:

I always think it’s a good idea when you have a tough time vs. a character, to visit that character’s thread and do a cursory search for ‘Sim’ to see if there’s already a thread created by players who main that char, to help us fill in any holes that we may not be noticing are apparent. Most times it will be info that’s already been discussed or posted, but it’s still good to know what goes through our opponent’s heads when fighting Sim.

Honestly IMO, the character specific threads don’t have really good information if its a character that the more senior dhalsim players don’t have trouble with. So you’ll find a wealth of knowledge in the Cammy or Abel thread, but other characters where it may be a 50-50 such as Adon or Cody not really much solid input chiming in.

Just me…

Good point. I agree. I’m leaving work now, but I’ll throw in some more advice when I get back to work on Monday

Happy Saturday, fellow Sims!

hi guys, how do u actually fight akuma? i dun rly know how to deal wif his nasty wakeup games and once he gets a knockdown, its basically over for me :(. Can some kind soul walk me thru the list of wakeup options he has and the appropriate counter that i shld choose for each situation? would appreciate that a lot! thks!

I started typing this in the general discussion thread till I realized it could be a lot more character-specific than I originally thought, so here goes:

Just curious what you guys like to do to open up a round (assuming the opponent is competent, not a training dummy). It may vary depending on matchup (since they can open with DPs or FBs), but in general, what will be the 1st thing you do at “FIGHT!!”

Thus far I’m varying between:
-sMP
-sMK
-cMP
-dash back, then usually yoga fire unless they prompt something else
-teleport back

Just wondering if there are better options, or if one of the above is the consistently smarter choice. Thanks!

There’s a real old thread about openers, but it’s really just one good Ultradavid post. Some of it might be too old, maybe some hitboxes change, but for the most part i think this holds up.

So here’s something dumb but great. Was playing a decent Bison. He U2’s a IAT setup, I jb.lk out of panic, and it stuffs it whil he’s landing. I don’t know how it will work on crossup U2, but then maybe jb.mk would work for that. Basically, if you IAT a bison stocked with U2, don’t go for j.hp, because its too slow and will get beat, or at least IAT higher.

His U2 can be reversal-ed, but had he done it while you were still in the air from IAT it would have caught you.
I would never attempt to fireball, IAT against a Dic with U2 stocked… this may change however if they change his U2 motion to a charge back.

you can probably just teleport low enough to be able to block the ultra. it also adds the mixup of going low after the teleport instead of a jumping normal.

We should test that out but I REALLY doubt that you’ll be able to block it no matter how low you teleport. I play this match every day and my buddy and I have done a lot of testing. I don’t want to say that I know this 100% certain, but let’s do some testing and see what we find.

Ya, I’m guessing you’ll either get caught in the air or during recovery if Dic does it correctly.

Did you guys know that an empty jump, no matter how well you time the shangrila, can beat the ultra if an invincible move is used the exact moment after landing? This is ofc very difficult, since you can’t spam an invincible move after the ultra flash, as this will lead to an aerial attack and thus 3 frames of recovery as you land, but it is doable, and can potentially lead to shangrila being shut down completely.

Edit: Derp… I see that this post didn’t quite fit the thread. My bad guys!

This thread should stay stickied imo

Is this the general consensus? I can ask UltraDavid if it’s ok to put a reference to the table of contents for individual match-up information in the OP.

My only concern is that when people come here looking for match-up information they’ll see this giant thread of mostly vanilla SF4 information and not realize that there’s a somewhat organized set of individual match-up threads.

True. I guess we should start using the specific matchup threads.

I think that a thread like this has a use, however when good information is validated the individual matchup threads should probably be updated to reflect it. I don’t know, you guys tell me what you think.

I gave up looking for an ibuki thread. How do you block that mixup she does where she knocks down into air knife and just repeats over and over. Blocking it online seems completely random =/

its exactly like the dhalsim fireball mixup …
u dont block the kunai … u just block away from ibuki wherever she is … when u block … focus on her not the kunai
hope this makes sense
