Dexter Season 8, The End is inevitable

I admire Dexter for his mind, but the things he does will eventually destroy him. Evil just doesn’t win.

Exactly. I did the same thing with Nip/Tuck. That show stopped being good really early, but I watched until the final season just to see what happens. Dexter isn’t as bad as N/T got though. That’s about the only thing I like about it right now.

It’s just so troubling that a show about a fucking serial killer as the protagonist in its final season (meaning ANYTHING can happen) is “meh” at best.

I feel like I’ve been watching the same episode 8 times.

The fact that there’s a scene with Dexter, Hannah, Deb and Harrison, and then the very next scene has them again but in different clothes, speaks volumes of the lack of diversity. They’ll throw in a Quinn scene for the hell of it, but that’s it.

I FUCKING HATE THIS SHOW

Why is Dexter telling everyone he’s moving? Like, what is the advantage of that other than letting the marshal guy know? To be nice to the people you know? You mean the ones you also lie to in a heartbeat in any other situation?

If you’re Hannah McKay, super wanted criminal, why don’t you fucking dye your hair or grow a beard or fucking whatever and not look exactly the same as you did before? Also why would you go out in public and be all like HERE’S MY FACE, YOU MIGHT RECOGNIZE ME FROM SUCH HITS AS ME KILLING A BUNCH OF PEOPLE. Also why did we have to bring Harrison to the ER for a gash on his chin? You couldn’t just google it so you wouldn’t have to SHOW YOUR SUPER WANTED FACE IN PUBLIC?! In the same line, why is she walking around in a house with the windows and doors wide open right next to a public beach? Like if the marshal had just turned and looked at the house he’d have a direct line of sight to Hannah.

As for other stuff, hurrrr hafta kill the son of Vogel guy because hurrrr emotions. Quinn is with Deb again? Sure. Deb is back on the force? Ok. Deb x Elway relationship done. zzzzzzz Also what was the point of the 20 second scene about Masuka’s daughter smoking the sticky icky? That scene pretty much literally accomplished nothing.

[details=Spoiler]Wow. Vogel’s murderous son ended up killing her when she thought love would conquer all. What a fucking surprise.

I heard some spoilers for the final eps of this series, and they sucked. Unfortunately, they seem to be coming true. I don’t know if you guys are going to be really pissed at the finale, or if you’ll accept it just because it’s a shocking turn and the rest of the season has been garbage. Time will tell.[/details]

Again, I don’t want to start any show beef here with Breaking Bad. I shouldn’t even be comparing the two shows, seeing as how their only common link is that I care what happens in both. But I just remembered something that, for me, makes all this Dexter fail even more unbearable.

Breaking Bad has a flash forward. Thanks to 501 & 509, we already knew EVERYTHING would come crumbling down. We knew the Whites’ house will be evacuated. We know Walt will run. We know he has NOTHING in the future, if his appearance is any clue. We know that EVERYBODY, somehow, will find out he’s Heisenberg. Hell, we know Walt will survive until the finale. Think of just how much tension they’re throwing away with that. It’s a handicap. STILL, the show has had me on the edge of my seat. It’s just as riveting as it always was.

Dexter had no flash forward for its final season. Just a serial killer as the protagonist and a sister who was spiraling from the revealed secret. Oh, and free reign to do any fucking thing they want, since this is the last season. Just evaluate that premise by itself. Shouldn’t it lead to far more awesome things than we got? But no. We’d much rather see Quinn and Jamie. Will Quinn make Sergeant? What is the deal with Masuka’s Daughter? Hi, Zac- OH SHIT, they killed Zach! You bastards! And on and on and on. It’s like the writers got together every week and said “how can we make sure this show goes out with a ‘meh’?”

Honestly, I’m just going to allow myself to be spoiled. I’m tired of things.

…OK then. Here’s a GameFAQs thread that sums things up (as the actual spoilers don’t break it down by episode), with links to the actual spoilers:

I already read it by the time you posted it.

I’ll say this to those who don’t want to be spoiled.

Don’t bother with the rest of the series if you want to keep your sanity and peace intact. Normally I’d never do this as it would have the opposite effect of making everyone want to see it. Plus I’m always privy to everyone else making their own opinion.

But I’ll say this again with as straight a face as I can.

DO NOT WATCH THE REST OF THE SERIES! You’ll hate yourself, you’ll hate the writers, you’ll hate the actors, you’ll hate everyone.

I’m watching the series now just because I can’t look away from the trains that are about to collide.

I’m really sad here that the actors don’t have more of a say in how things go.

Damn, the ending is THAT bad, not even decent? Don’t spoil it for me tho, I’ve made it thru the Religion Killer arc, I can survive the ending

No you can’t. No…you can’t. Just…everything, including the choice of spinoff…your TV won’t survive and you may try to kill any of the actors in the street if you see them.

Masuka’s daughter in a skirt…goddamn. She’s a lobster. “All the meat’s in the back.”

I’ve been with this show for years. I’m seeing it through to the end even though the quality of the show has been up and down throughout seasons.

I’ll get flamed for this, but this season and last season have been decent. Sure, not Season 1-4 level, but WAY better than the shit seasons in between. If the ending can manage to make me not want to throw a brick at my TV, I’ll be satisified. Despite alot of shoddy writing, this series had alot of great moments. Still, I can’t help but wonder how it would’ve turned out if the Breaking Bad writers got hold of the series instead of the current writers

Alright. you’ve been warned. But it’s nothing I didn’t expect.

It’s not even like you need Breaking Bad caliber writers. All the problems with Dexter at this point could have been avoided by even semi-competent writers.

Hannah didn’t need to exist. For that matter, why does Dex even need a love interest? Wasn’t that territory completely explored with Rita? Even if Dex HAD to have another girlfriend, why not have someone he has reason to trust? Whether the girl knew about his exploits or not, trust would be a key issue here. Hannah could poison him and Harrison any time she feels like.

They could have stopped with all these side street arcs nobody cares about, and focused on the A and B stories. That, I think, is Dexter’s main downfall. Almost every side-story taking place is unimportant in the grand scheme of things. Since we’re talking Breaking Bad writers, that’s one of BB’s main strengths. Almost EVERY arc you see on screen is important, even if it’s not at the forefront.

On that note, they could have done more with their B stories. I didn’t like Zach, but he was something interesting other than all the C level things they have going on now.

Now, I admit I’d be hard pressed to come up with a compelling final storyline for the final season of Dexter that hasn’t been done already. He’s already faced off against big time serial killers. He’s already evaded capture (twice). He’s already toyed with letting people into his circle. I’m not saying the writers have it easy here. Still, almost anything would be better than we got.

It’s not hard. It’s hard because Dexter ran FAR longer than it should have. That’s the reason it’d be hard to have a good final storyline.

It should’ve never made it past 5 seasons. And that’s not so much criticism as practicality. MOST shows degrade in quality after a few seasons. Writing and creativity gets thin. Only so many times you can run in circles before encroaching an end game. Many long runners suffer from contrived ways to prolong a show. Even some of my current favorite shows run from that problem. Psych is hitting that problem right now.

Name how many shows run for 6+ seasons and then go back and see how many of those shows have seasons from 6 and beyond that aren’t outpaced by earlier ones. Now that’s not to say it doesn’t happen. But not often.

I made it through 8 eps. I’ll save myself the spoils and just get through the last 2, no matter how bad.

This is going to be weird, but just roll with me. If this series ending is just as bad as we assume it will be, how about we make it better? When this series is over, and the rage is washing in by the ton, let’s post here our actual ideas on what they could have done with a final season, and see if they’re better than what we got. They don’t have to be complex; just summaries of general arcs.

I was rethinking those spoilers I just posted. If they’re true, then this is probably the only show that’s convinced me that I could do better. I want to test that.
