Devil May Cry!

I was just trying to point out the irony of how it “blows your mind” that people like what DMC3 has to offer over DMC1 when you just told someone to realize that not everyone feels the same way.

Also I edited my last post with a response to your edit to avoid double posting but by the time I finished it wasn’t really necessary.

I agree. I have a different view on why I see DMC3 as the best. I first started with DMC2 and thought it was awesome, then I bought DMC3 on release and loved it. But when I decided to go back and play DMC1 to see what it was like, I really couldn’t appreciate it because I already tasted the nectar that was DMC3. I could understand why people liked 1 though.

Oh yeah, has anyone thought of an appropriate name for this guy yet? I can’t bring myself to call him cough up blood Dante.

Well yea around the 100th hour of gameplay the story and characters dont mean much and Gameplay is about all that matters. Yea DMC3 does have a better story then DMC1 does but that means shit at the 100h+ marker least in my opinion. So yes when deciding which one is a better GAME I am using GAME Play as the deciding factor since that tends to be the most important aspect of action games. It’s gameplay.

The difference is that I’m not quoting people going “Nuh uh your wrong watch how these other people play the game!!!” or giving vauge explinations for why UI think the game is better. I’m explaining myself and the reasons for such while most who have quoted me have gone “No your wrong” and left it at that.

I have no problem calling him Twilight Dante.

Well it still has that “Dante” part, no good. Need some meme level nickname lol.

I’m actually starting to warm up to the new Dante despite being absolutely livid when he was first revealed. I’m still not the biggest fan of his design but it’s not as bad as I originally thought. Still not a fan of what the atmosphere of the game seems like but it was just a 2 minute trailer, things will most likely change. And seriously, the guy doesn’t look anything like some out of twilight or have an Emo style to him Not 80’s or Modern emo. He has more of a Post Punk vibe going for him, though the smoking needs to go.

Oh… well my bad. I didn’t really mean anything by it, I was just poking fun at the idea.

Anyway, back on topic…

I don’t think the design is THAT bad, but it’s really hard for me to warm up to it because they’re billing this as a Devil May Cry game. It’s so different that it really doesn’t have to be one. That makes me think that they really don’t have any confidence in this title and that they need an established name to carry it.

The irony of all that is, Devil May Cry 1 was originally supposed to be a Resident Evil title but they changed it because it was so different from the Resident Evil series. Man I think my head is going to explode…

Because you speak for the entire “fanbase”.

If it was a new IP not nearly as many people would be complaining about it. Were that the case I think it would be getting predominantly positive press from everyone except those who really dislike Ninja Theory’s games.

I’m still holding out that it’s some alternate dimension shit. Naming the setting Limbo City leads me to believe they might go that route. Sadly I’m probably reading too much into it.

Not sure how anyone can like DMC1’s gameplay over 3’s when 3 has so much more freedom and comboability to offer. While I do agree the enemies from 1 were better, they pretty much become a joke like 3’s enemies unless you’re terrible at the game. Shadows are a complete joke unless you encounter two of them at once (happens a few times) on DMD. Frosts become a complete joke even on DMD because of DT + Kick-13 combo, and most of the time you don’t even have to fight them. The only enemies that are threatening in numbers are the lizards and that’s about it. Once you master the trash enemies in DMC1, they just become a chore to fight, rather than being fun combo fodder that DMC3’s enemies were.

DMC1’s bosses were fun at first, but once you get to DMD, they just become a test of endurance rather than skill. All of the bosses stayed relatively the same, with Nightmare probably changing the most out of all of them. Phantom was the same every time except the last time you fight him where he just ends up jumping as a new attack. Nelo Angelo 3 was just a big endurance test since your biggest combo was about 5% damage on him, so the fight would end up being a ten minute fight. Nightmare was the biggest endurance test of all, and the difficulty of Nightmare 2 and 3 on DMD was just so absurd it wasn’t even fun. Oh I forgot about Griphon. Fuck that guy too.

DMC3’s bosses felt much more varied and more of a test of skill rather than endurance, not to mention the style system offered a lot more freedom to kill bosses. Some styles were better than others for killing bosses, but you usually could choose any one that you want. All three of the Vergil fights were a lot different from the previous ones (completely new move sets sans Yamato swordplay).

I will say DMC1 was definitely harder than DMC3, but the difficulty did not scale in a good way. Like I said, difficulty came in tests of endurance, rather than tests of skill. It was like “how long can you play perfectly while landing your 5% combo every two minutes while the boss can kill you in 3-4 hits?”.

That’s just my thoughts.

Something’s bothering me. Theres a difference between:

Hipster

Emo

Punk

The new Dante is NOT a fucking hipster. He’s a punk.

I don’t know what I dislike more: Dante’s new look or the term “Western” being used as a) a blanket term for something “not Japanese” and b) in a negative light.

On the former: it’s the hair. And it isn’t that the hair isn’t the same as the original do, it’s that it looks… I don’t even know. It bothers me.

On the latter: Japan-worship is dumb. This isn’t me saying Ninja Theory is some godly dev. I don’t even care about the DMC franchise. Just hate all the “fucking Western dev fucking up Japanese glory” nonsense flying around the internet in response to this reboot.

Dr. B’s new hairstyle looks like Haohmaru mixed with Sephiroth mixed with Dolemite.

He’s ugly as sin is what he is.

Nah. Can do better than that, how about “Tweeking Dante”?

It would have been better if they just started up a new series if they couldn’t think of how to continue Devil May Cry, instead of rebooting Dante into a brooding character and losing the carefree one.

Overall, this guy is just Dante in name only.

Japan worshiping has always been dumb. Though this game didn’t need a western feel to begin with since it was already doing better in the west than east. If capcom (or Ninja Theory) wanted to do a more western game, they were better off just making a new action adventure and letting DMC take a seat in the back. Not like anyone would be any more mad than now. I don’t really agree at all on the “western dev fucking up Japanese glory” nonsense as most of the games western devs got hands on that are from the east aren’t even that vast to begin with. But it’s clear that most of the big heads all over the gaming industry say the East are falling behind. (minus Nintendo who seem to have a hack for keeping their mascots stay fresh with the same stuff over and over and people eat it up like it’s really new.)

The big thing here that’s affecting most is that DMC didn’t need a reboot or a westernized feel. The game was already big and selling big (if people want to believe it or not.) If this was billed as a new game by Ninja Theory, there would be cleary less hate (obviously), people would either care or not care, and everyone who’s had past experience with Heavenly Sword would still be weary to care or not.

The only thing dumb about Japan worshiping are their bitches. Anything else of interest can be dickrode properly.

See, for me and I suspect several others it isn’t “OMG these Westerners are ruining the majestic Japanese title!!!”, it’s “Oh fuck Ninja Theory sucks ass and they’re remaking a game that didn’t need remaking”.

For example of Western companies taking Japanese IPs and making them epic and awesome, see Castlevania: Lords of Shadow and Metroid Prime.

Castlevania: LOS is not looking that hot, TBH. I saw a fairly boring video from TGS of the main character doing his worst impersonation of the main character from Shadow of the Colossus. Then I saw some footage of him on horseback also failing to do that better than Kratos did on top of Pegasus in GOWII. Granted, the combat looked good, but I’m not seeing where Mercurysteam has done a better job than a japanese dev team.

I have yet to see a good non side scrolling platform Castlevania yet. Metroid Prime though is awesome for a series that jumped from platform to FPS style game.
