I think his current tools just aren’t good enough,** ex tatsu needs to hit low,** I don’t care if the others don’t but ex should. When I have 3 bars I want to be able to command a certain level of respect. As Gouken currently stands he commands no respect, when I fight against a gouken using any other character I just go in, and straight maul. I can’t say I’ve ever fought a gouken that totally destroys me when I’m using any of the other characters I mess with :be it dudley, ibuki, ryu, fei, I pretty much just walk forward since he’s not very threatening. Gouken is very susceptible to throws, having a move with some throw invincibility would be nice(maybe lk tatsu? ), or ex kongo get something like 3 frames of throw invincibility.
Things that I’d like to see change, but probably won’t.
Goukens buttons kinda suck, and by that I mean when playing against characters like Sagat, press buttons and sagats buttons beat yours. Maybe some command normals like oni’s, hell a target combo that could be started off a light and canceled into lp palm would go a long ways imo.
I meant the time it currently takes to charge a level two fireball should be how long it takes to charge a three hit fireball in 2012edition with half that being the time it should take to charge a two hit fireball. That’s still slower than other multiple hit fiteballers like akuma ONI and evil ryu but that’s ok cos we have better recovery. But still not as good as sag at and guile etc, but that’s fine too
He talks about AE 2012 Denjin, especially about how Kongo FADC Denjin is useful and will help stun the opponent. He personally believes being able to Kongo FADC Denjin is the biggest buff for Gouken. He thinks Gouken definitely got buffed, but losing the HP Palm follow-up from hadouken is a nerf. He said that for post-2012 Gouken close-range fight to stun the opponent is really important, and that it fits his playstyle.
He wrote that he wanted air tatsu as a flip follow-up in loctest.
Ahh, now I understand. Thx for clearing it up. Having a 3 hit fireball as a wake-up meaty option would be exciting.
Maybe someone should send some of those japanese players the list reipin compiled in his ono thread. It would be bad if none of our suggestions were listened to but we instead got a gouken tailored to 3 peoples play styles. Flip to air tatsu should be the last of anyone’s concerns imo.
I believe that if they raised Gouken to have abilities that would make him theoretically mid tier, we who have been growing with him would be able to dominate the circuits since we’ve become so effective with him as a crappy character. They won’t do that. Seriously, some people here are so good with Gouken that they win matches that are highly unfavorable against very strong players. Capcom is scared of the Gouken community and Gouken’s true potential.
Well, I posted this on my “Burned out…” thread but figured no one was going there so I wanted to share where I’m at right now. Not that anyone cares or will agree but the current situation regarding the game changes do not bode well for my continued participation…
I don’t even know how some players manages 5000 pp with gouken, maybe it’s just a lot of playing ranked(I don’t play ranked). But I can only imagine maintaining that must be daunting.
climaxter, that post makes me sad because everything you said about gouken is true. Maybe its the soft music I have playing in the background but your post almost brought me to a tear. I fully empathize with you. I wish I wanted to play another character but there is only one character for me and that’s what makes it so sad.

I remember a couple of people here mentioning they wanted air tatsu to be a demon flip option. That would be sick if there was tiger-knee motion for it.
Forward dash --> MP Palm is similar to HP Palm for tagging some air hadoken juggles. That could make up for its loss.
A faster two-hit charge hadoken (I’ll take 3-hits too) would be nice.
Play him since vanilla so u are a character specialist.
Kick opponents who use characters who fuck up gouken and are also excellent players if you’re bull cat
Play a lot and take the game seriously.
I can’t do any of those anymore but I had over 5k with my old main, you have to know your character like the back of your hand. I’d say I’m 75% there with gouken knowledge being ingrained, I’m clueless on some aspects of match ups, and I don’t press the right buttons on reflex (like cr.lk bushin flips 100%). I used to enter tournaments and travel around Europe to play during vanilla, good times, but real life took over so I probably won’t get a chance to dedicate myself to the game again to get to 5k standard with the old man, shame in a way
That would be a long list! Also I’ve played him since Vanilla.
When I used to actually play ranked seriously It was hard enough to maintain 4k. Im not sure if playing ranked and taking it more seriously would make me better or just stress me out, probably both, I’d probably be a lot more disciplined.
A farther forward dash would be nice. AA hp kongo fadc Ultra1 or mp palm would be easier. But I guess this would be pointless in 2012 if his old lp palm is back. Did u guys know that when Bison does his stupid jump in ambiguous mk, you can hp kongo fadc into ultra1 for 456 dmg or mp palm for 280dmg? I was doing it in training mode today and it works on crossup as well. try it and let me know what yall think. sorry if im not making sense, im tired and sleepy.
You shouldn’t really try to rationalize hitboxes too much, also it’s not that we want it to hit low, we want it to hit crouching opponents, I don’t think that’s too much to ask.
Not your fault , I can see how that can be confusing. We’ve just been using the words ‘low’ and ‘crouching’ interchangeably with regards to tatsu. being able to cr. mp xx tatsu FADC ultra would be nice to use on opponents not named sagat, gief or t-hawk.
the hitboxes in this game are so messed up anyways that it wouldn’t be out of the ordinary if his ex tatsu hit low enough to hit crouchers from a bigger distance.
If you can wrap your head around bison and sagat st.hk hitting crouchers you shouldn’t have any problem with hurricane hitting crouchers. Besides it looks fine vs Dudley sagat etc
I ran into a Takinflight last night on ranked. He’s REALLY good. So I’ve experienced how Gouken’s can get such high pp first hand. He bodied me three times. I somehow managed win one of the 4 games we had. How? I have no clue.
