Depression/Anxiety

Above all, the key first step is PROFESSIONAL MEDICAL HELP.
Only a medical professional can diagnose whether your depression is mainly genetic, post-traumatic stress, seasonal, or whatever.
Once you have a grasp on what the main causes are, then you can apply the necessary solution.

Telling someone to go out and exercise will help most people’s depression, but it won’t eliminate the root cause of depression from someone affected by a genetic chemical imbalance or trauma.

You need to understand that depression can be a biological illness just like diabetes. If someone has a deficiency of certain chemicals in their brain then they are going to be depressed and working it out themselves is not going to solve anything. Depression isn’t always just in your head, there is sometimes a biological reason for it and that’s where the medicine comes in. You’re right that medicine isn’t for everyone, especially people just having a bad month or year. Medicine won’t do shit for those people, like you said, but someone that has a longer history of depression should seriously consider medication.

Will medicine alone help? Very unlikely, medication only attempts to correct the biology of the brain, if the person is still being inactive and creating a bad environment for themselves then pills are useless. It would be like a diabetic taking their medicine but still eating shit they shouldn’t.

When depression is a result of environment, due to trauma or just having a completely shitty year/month/day then therapy is the better option for them because the pills won’t help them deal with past trauma. More serious personality disorders like Manic Depression(bi polar) or BPD, they need a combination of both therapy and medication (someone with BPD definitely needs medication as they are very chaotic).

We do agree that lifestyle has to change though. Like I said above if someone just gets some pills and does nothing to change their lifestyle then they are still going to be depressed, we definitely agree on that.

This. The suggestions in this thread are very helpful but a medical professional is what a person with depression really needs. They will able to determine the cause and help plan out a treatment much better than someone like me on a message board.

Tanner please do some research, it’s like you didn’t read my post. Medication doesn’t give any cure or correction, it just gives an elevation, temporarily. And again, people who inherit depression, are not actually born destined to be depressed (with no way out), it just means that they are more vulnerable. Medication is only prescribed when the person i mentally ill, seriously mentally ill.

I think one of the problems with medication is our society has become too dependent on it. All problems people have now apparently can be solved with pill popping, which I am very skeptical of. I know for schizophrenics and other legitimately mentally ill people its the only way, but I find it hard to believe in every case medication is the right cure. Its almost like society wants to use it as some sort of antidote for all human problems.

I do agree that in the end Shiki’s post is spot on because seeking professional help is the only way you’ll be able to truly find the remedy. Although, at the same time I’d like to know the relationship that these people have with medical companies as it almost seems like we want a society dependent on drugs for profit.

Bumping this thread because I’m making an appoitment with my GP regarding my past 2 months. And what I should expect. I’m uneasy taking pills.

When I went to a therapist (referred by my doctor), the first thing she did was ask a bunch of questions, including stuff like “when you’re alone, do you hear voices?” Answer honestly.

I’m also uneasy taking pills for depression, but partly because I’m already on prescriptions for acid reflux and sleep deprivation. I told her that I would like to avoid medication if at all possible, but that I’d be willing if it’s deemed necessary.

Some of the exercises she recommended I found silly, though I tried them all, and reported which ones I felt worked and which ones didn’t. She recommended alternatives, books, etc. (When I say “alternatives” I mean “to the exercises that didn’t do it for me,” NOT “alternative medicines.” Don’t buy into quackery.)

Summary: be honest, be forthright, and go there willing to get better.

I will channel the leylines into Dr. B-shaped inspirational messages for you.

At the first appointment, the therapist will just sit and chat with you, they will ask questions… a pep talk in short. The reason why they do this is because the first meeting will help them determine the seriousness of your issues (if medication is needed). Depressed people have a way of answering questions; they can also be detected by a psychologist by the way they speak. That’s what you should expect. If you don’t get any medication, then in reality it’s up to you to work it out… you don’t want to keep spending money on appointments if you are not prescribed with any medication or illness.

if your offered benzodiazepines for anxiety or depression ask your doc to prescribe you something else, if possible.

Why? Sell em and use the $$$ for happiness. Really though, if you don’t take them as prescribed, it could be bad
