Demon's/Dark Souls Thread. Dark Souls II!

How does the armor/weapon upgrade system work? And have you been annihilated by a super black phantom yet?

Rolling isn’t faster that I’ve noticed (other than obviously armoured/unarmoured and/or at higher stats). Everything control-wise seems to be the same as Demon’s Souls which IMO is fine. No jumping, X button (using PS3) is delegated to dash/roll/backstab.

Even though the controls are pretty much the same, and there are some items (that are just named/work differently) that reappear from Demon’s Souls, there are some very interesting new game mechanics (ie. convenants) and it does feel like it’s own game rather than a “map pack”, if that makes any sense.

After you find a Weapon Smithbox you can reinforce weapons at bonfires (using titanite - there are different kinds: blue, green, twinkling and demon). You can change damage type like in the previous game (ie. Crystal-, Lightning-, Raw-, Divine-, Chaos-, etc.) A Repairbox is required for repairing weapons (also at bonfires unless you have Repair Powder, which allows you to fix items in the field). Divine Embers are required for “Weapon Ascension”. Find a Bottomless Box to store excess items, only at bonfires (basically your Stockpile Thomas from Demon’s Souls).

Because there are more places to explore above and below you there is a new item called a “prism stone” which you drop and have to listen for the sound it makes. If it makes a loud sound, dropping off that particular ledge will be a very bad idea.

Beacon Fires are where you respawn upon dying and where you can refill your Estus Flasks (healing flasks) and spell “uses” (it works a little differently than MP in the first gam). Just like returning to the nexus in Demon’s Souls, returning to a Beacon Fire respawns all enemies in the area. You choose which Beacon Fire is “active” by lighting it.

There are open areas for PvP in the Black Forest.

As for super black phantom, I think(?) I saw one or two devs/mods around checking things out but I didn’t get close enough to any of them. I got my game on the proper retail date so none of them hunted me down as I have heard happen to those who had a pre-release.

wintermute, what’s the multiplayer like, more easily accessible for cooping?

im outi

Roberth

Yeah, what HeaT said. Is it easier to get into a coop game with your friends? It was kind of a pain in the ass in Demon’s Souls.

How was the rolling too slow in the first game? Were you playing with heavy armor, or did you just not increase your equip burden? You should always have your equip burden under 50% of its max.

Holy fuck if they made rolling any better!!!

Anyways, lol @ being troll’d. That explains a lot with some of the streams I’ve been checking out.
I guess people know better by now.

I know the difference in the rolling speeds from the first game. It just seemed quicker in Dark Souls. Possibly that the animation of the game looks smoother that I couldn’t tell.

Multiplayer is similar to Demon’s Souls, except now you are connected dynamically to people around you geographically rather than via servers like Demon’s Souls was. You can activate bonfires for other players and you can leave items for them, not just messages.

messages

Spoiler

You can leave helpful AND harmful messages this time around.

PvP is back and if you are invaded you can turn into an object like a broom or barrel to hide from stronger invading Phantoms. The game can be played mostly solo but there have been some parts of the story that required me to go online.

example

Spoiler

For example, I had to find an item that someone else had and attack him for it a couple of times. These types of battles are built into the game and it’s pretty seamless so when it happened I was like, “Oh shi-- this is an actual dude not the CPU”. There are parts of the story where you have to compete and parts where you have to co-operate.

There are things that happen to your character as time goes on but I really don’t want to spoil that with details but I will say that it adds tension to the game and really immerses you into your character. Oh, and even though you can play your own style and level up stats as you like, the class you pick does affect the way the story goes.

endgame

Spoiler

There are several “endings”, like Demon’s Souls, but it’s a bit different. There is a “completion point” but you can choose not to complete it and keep playing your character in the world forever.

Interesting, so the online players have more interacting as acting like enemies in replace of NPCs?

I remember Demon’s Souls did this once when you fight a specific boss, sometimes the boss is replaced with an actual opponent.
If this happens “more often” in a more creative way, that would be neat!

Yeah that was 3-3 IIRC, I loved invading on that level cause you could really surprise the shit out of someone haha.

3-3 boss was awesome. I will be happy if there are more moments like that in Dark Souls.

I loved being the boss for that level, but I didn’t like how you’re allowed to eat greens when you already have a huge lifebar and auto-homing arrows. Many assholes also like to stand beside the door so they can ambush you when you come in.

So is the level restriction for blue/black phantom the same? Back in Demon’s Souls the rule was (1/10 of host’s level) +/-10 levels.
And is there a way for multiple blacks to invade a game…?

I did that shit all the time.

Apparently, the 360 version has Party Chat disabled. This has made 360 board on GFAQs very pissy.

haha, WELCOME TO DIE.

PozerWolf:
Yeah, there is more online interaction (co-op/PvP/etc.) in the game.

online play differences

Spoiler

You can morph into different objects to help you hide yourself from invading players. You can have up to 4 (host + 3 blue/blacks) in co-op at a time.

Divinus:
Black Phantoms in online play

Spoiler

Yes, multiple Black Phantom invaders are possible.

As for level restrictions for online play, I haven’t noticed anything to suggest that it would be different from Demon’s Souls, but: 1) Everyone I’m playing with is around the same level as me since we all just started and 2) being linked geographically rather than by server like in Demon’s Souls, it is possible that such restrictions are somewhat relaxed if not entirely lifted. I’ll try and find out for you.

Hey, this game is out in America area.
Why aren’t you douche bags talking about it and sharing PSN user names?

I have something to say about this game.
It’s fuckin’ Demon Souls 1.5, but with added movement/moves and balanced some shit. In other words, it’s awesome (don’t fix what isn’t broken).
The music actually sound like boss songs, unlike before where it sounded like shit and nothing more. So yeah, the music is way better, but still isn’t saying much, lolololol. I dunno, maybe there’s actually a really good track somewhere down the line.

As someone who got the platinum in the first Demon Souls, trust me I am dying to play it lol. Turns out my new issue is I can’t get a hold of a ps3 again till Monday. Friend is selling it to me for $100 flat. Also correct me if I am wrong but I hear it is like the first game where it is very hard to meet up due to level differences. So PSN ID exchange might be pointless. Good to hear the music is good, but I am curious to know what the patches are about?

Played this game for 5 mins. If I bought it with my own money, I’d have returned it already.

It’s ok that you’re bad at games. It’s cute.
