I wish I could go but I don’t think i’m ready yet due to lack of tourney experience.
runaway? just stay solid and stand your ground.
i think rushdown is harder. i’m low risk lol
But its so much fun playing rushdown dee jay!
Jcool: You give the most compact and useful advice.
icefuzion.remix: It’s not “running away”, it’s “resetting spacing!”
My Shadowloo Showdown so far:
Thursday there was a pre-SS tournament at our local arcade. I didn’t play any of the big names in the tournament, but I did get a best of 5 rounds set against Michael Tan’s Akuma and one against Filipino Champ in casuals. I took a round off of Michael Tan (which was a highlight of the whole weekend so far), and put up a good fight in all but one round where I got murdered. Filipino Champ demolished me, highlighting my lack of Sim matchup knowledge.
Pool play at Shadowloo Showdown was today. I had to win my first match against an unknown (Gidster, from the UK, who plays Ken) to advance to play Momochi, which I did. I gave Momochi a good fight in the first set, but I think he downloaded me for the second, where I got smashed. I got knocked out in my next set by a Ken who is a bit better than I am (Botman, from Queensland). A friend filmed the match against Momochi and possibly Botman, so I’ll upload the footage to the video thread when it gets back to me.
Our pool also featured a massive upset, as local Guy player Phero upset Momochi in a tight set to advance in the winners spot. Momochi made it out through the loser’s side.
I always told ppl guy is really strong. He only gets raped by grapplers which you can just counterpick. Maybe I should go guy deejay? I’m done using deejay first.
I can think of a few hard matchups that Guy would have an easier time with than Dee Jay. Dhalsim, Chun, Blanka and Fei come to mind.
I think Adon/Dee Jay could also be a strong pairing. Adon has similar weak matchups against grapplers to Guy, and might be stronger against the top tier characters than either Guy or Dee Jay, player skill with the characters being equal.
After reading this i’ll have to try out adon for a pocket character he feels like more of a solid choice.
Check out box arena every tuesday night. AE tournament. And sometimes my deejay will be on stream. Got third this time, lost to viscant twice. damn blanka.
Did anyone see the triple Dee Jay blowup at Southtown arcade Saturday Night Snapbacks this weekend? Good thing I went first because I’m scrubby, but Willpower shouldn’t have lost his game. I find the Honda matchup hard so I wasn’t surprised Kurokiba lost his match. He dropped a few sobat to super to ultra. Any tips on the Sagat matchup? I dropped the dash ultra once and didn’t punish two whiffed dps. Other than that I don’t really know what to do. Play the fireball war?
Jcool has a useful video on the Sagat matchup on his Youtube channel that informs my style of playing that matchup.
The impulse against a character like Sagat is to rush down because his fireballs are variable and fast and the Sagat will want to sit back and throw them.
You can also play a slower-paced, grinding positional game against Sagat pretty effectively. Dee Jay has ways to move through the fireballs while advancing into a range where Sagat can’t safely throw fireballs. With this in mind, you can (and should) play a bit of the fireball war to build meter, but you should also slide under some high Tiger Shots, or knee hop over some Tiger Shots. Typically, the Sagat will have to back up in order to keep throwing Tiger Shots, or move in on you where the matchup is more favorable for Dee Jay. (Especially if he jumps in while you’re down-charged!) You can also EX Sobat through, and here it’s important to realize that you’re not just trading the meter for damage, but to gain about 3/4 screens worth of space and push him way toward the corner.
In the corner, I seem to be able to get a lot of counter hit setups off of Fireballs into cl.mp, st.lk (hit confirmable into LK Sobat with charge), st.mk or cr.mk. I’m not completely clear on this, since they’re not listed as being + frames on block, but it seems to work often enough on hit or block. Mixing a throw game and knee shots in with that can make for a lot of pressure.
I need to hit the lab to scope this, but EX Fireball can also lead to more tricky corner setups. It’s +5 on hit, which means that you can queue up a far st.hp (8 frame startup).to possibly create some high damage juggles on counter hit, not to mention +1 on block for traps with faster normals.
Ah ok that makes sense. I’ve played a few Sagats that kinda play the fireball war looking for the jump in to kara dp. I’ll check out that video, thanks Mike. Since Sagat is so tall I didn’t time a few of my jump ins properly and didn’t have enough hit stun to continue my combo; I ate a few mashed dps. I got hit by his cr Hp a few times too. It blew up my lk sobat, cr hk and a sometimes my cr mk. I remember saying “ok, here goes a lk sobat-SHIT that didn’t work”. Then “Let’s try a cr hkCRAP that didn’t work either”. Finally I was like “Ok the cr mk might be okWTF that got stuffed!”. Doesn’t help I dropped a dash ultra that might have won me a round. I need to play people more. What ends up happening to me is I can do the combos in training mode, including the dash ultra, but when I get the opportunities to do them in matches I drop them. Time to hit more training mode…
I can’t tell if you are serious or not.
Da Knut’s idea of what to do in the matchup is pretty much spot on. Blanka has to make some stupid mistake. Like for me when I lose to deejay online(I don’t lose to deejay offline), it’s because of connection instability or me dropping combos for the most part.
Patience, don’t throw slashers except at max range or to bait for a Focus Attack. Blanka cant ball without being punished. Just have to be ready to punish quick jumps or hops.
I like this post on the match up:
So assume that Blanka will do something stupid or not know the matchup and do unsafe slides/balls/jump like a moron?
The thing is if Blanka doesn’t, Deejay loses at pretty every stage of the matchup other than when blanka is knocked down or has blocked a cr.lp or a cl.mk.
Is there even such a thing? His fireball and situational AA’s suck! So damn frustrating sometimes. I love Dee-Jay because his simple knockdown combos rape mediocre players, but playing him against patient players just drains me mentally. I wish Crapcom buffed his fireball or at least made his slide better so he could keep charge better. I mean, what kind of an SF game has him losing to Honda and Zangief? 'Da fuck?
runaway deejay doesn’t exist. his jump back is shorter than his forward jump. his backdash is ass.
turtle deejay yes, rushdown yes? maybe, runaway idk
Yeah there’s no way Dee Jay could run away and constantly keep away. It might just be a case where you need to learn what to do in each situation. I don’t like turtle Dee Jay but I end up doing it a lot; but not really on purpose.
That works on a dumb Blanka player. A good Blanka player won’t ball. They will literally sit there and wait and do nothing but use safe buttons. The trick to the matchup is rushing Blanka down before he gets any meter. I can’t tell you how to do that, That’s when experience come into play
