DeeJay General Discussion

Yeah I get frustrated some times…like when I go to AA a jump in with st.mp from downback position and get fireball counter hit comboed.Upkicks getting stuffed or straight up going the wrong direction… Or fireball coming out when I want to standing jab someone who switched sides…or getting grabbed when I knew the grab it was coming…I mean those REAL obvious grabs…then I’m like “DAMN! why do I keep attempting this shit when it aint working…it feels like it should work”

I also seem to lack the ability to adjust…I remember a match I played with Dknut playing chun…I think I ran the clock out on him. So the next match he pushes me to the corner and tick throws/ frame traps the shit out of me…I noticed in some of his other matches he adjusts well too…I’m abit to one dimensional.

Did I mention I SCHUCK at teching grabs? I tell myself “dont mash grab tech”…then I get grabbed.

I think I’m just gonna work on commiting to the downback position…I think I get alot of unnesessary pressure due to releasing my charge and walking myself into a corner.(then again when I seem to do this focus attacks give me problems)

It’s okay man, you’ve just hit a momentary wall in your DeeJay progress. Some days will just flat out suck when you play. You’ll use all of your mind’s power, but the other guy just has all the answers or your frustration has compounded and makes your play worse. Nothing wrong with turning the game off and blowing off some steam. But! One positive that I’ll take from this is your dedication. You care that you’re making mistakes and you’re acknowledging them. So that means you’re ready to improve.

Now, one thing that I will tell you. Teching throws online is fucking hard. Even if you’re even halfway decent at it offline, the smallest bits of latency in your matches online make certain things tougher (1 frame links have gotten me reversal 720’d/ ultra’d more times than I can count). So I definitely understand where you’re coming from. Something that I stole from another player who told me this is to “damage mitigate”. There are no characters in this game that can combo off of their regular throw. Unless you’re gonna die or get put in a nasty mixup situation then it’s FINE to take a throw or two or even three. Characters like Adon or Balrog who have a NASTY counter-hit throw setup are banking on the fact that you want to tech their throws, so it’s like “Take a Counterhit combo for big damage potentially?” or “Eat a throw that puts me in a crossup/mixup situation that I may be able to escape easily.” The only characters I would say you’d absolutely need to worry about throw teching are : Viper, Twins, Gief, Fuerte, Seth, Akuma. Possibly Dudley and Makoto.

However I don’t think Downbacking is the answer. The key to successful DeeJay play imo is the Balance between zoning and rushdown. Certain characters are just gonna outzone you and that’s a fact of any FG. I played Boxer in Vanilla and HATED the Chun matchup so much. But you’ll find your ways to work around certain character’s bullshit and even the player-specific gimmicks. Just take a moment, watch your replays and re-create the situation in training mode. And try to think of ways to get out of the situation you’re getting put into. There’s almost always an answer. Even if it means you take a trade or two.

That’s interesting. I never really thought about that concept “damage mitigation”. I’m always trying to avoid pressing buttons(specially against Cody and Rose) but that makes alot of sense. Maybe not for Gouken tho :stuck_out_tongue:

I think I’m also approaching some matches wrong…Like early today I fought this ryu and tried to do the fireball war thing and got deaded up…Then I decided I was gonna just work my way in instead of trying to stay out…I freakn whooped the guys ass(perfect one round) and he seemed like he absolutly sucked…It made me think. Should I be using the fireballs to set up my ingame rather than using them to keep them out sometimes?

ehhhh, it depends on a few things. Positioning, Meter, your opponents meter and how they throw their fireballs. Are they willing to stand and chuck plasma at you? or are they the type that gets bored after a few and tries to punish with a Jump-in, Tatsu, etc.

But for Ryu specifically, I would say that DeeJay throwing fireballs serves three purposes 1) gaining meter 2) forcing them to do something risky to avoid fireballs 3) Helps you set up your close game. Due to the fact that Dee Jay has a really fast walkspeed and kneeshot, he can mess with Ryu by throwing some slashes at 3/4ths, full-screen and moving in slowly by sliding behind his slashes or kneshotting/sliding/ EX Sobating through fireballs. DeeJay doesn’t really want to fireball war a whole lot, but against Ryu it’s a decent strategy. I’d say it’s an important skill to learn spacing, especially against better players who aren’t gonna jump/ spaz out when you’re throwing fireballs out.

I agree,but with some qualifications.

Unless I’m about to lose the round (I’m on 1% health and he’s on 70%), and I’ve got less meter than he does, I never exchange more than three fireballs with characters like Ryu without moving. As has been stated, he wins the fireball race, hands down. I agree with what you said about moving behind your slashers, and I would add that you should be careful when sliding behind your fireballs at too close a range, since you can often get caught by Ryu’s next fireball while still in the recovery of your slide. Usually one or two slashers is more than enough to get you to the range where you can think about knee shot, jump-in, EX sobat through, or even slide under.

Focus attacks shouldn’t give you so many problems if you keep your sobat at hand. And if you haven’t got charge, st. mk is effective at the ranges where people usually try to focus attack you.

Nah sobats usually get stuffed at the ranges I’m talking about…or when they use them in attack strings. I’m having better success with just walk up grab against that stuff.

Man sometimes I wonder why the hell I play this game online. The stuff people get away with is terri-retarded.

…If you aint got a Dp, Dive kick, or command grab you aint got shit in this game.

It blows my mind how people can play this game as well as they do…

Ken: stepkick karagrab dp guessing game(absolutley safe for 2 meters)…Why am I playing Dee Jay?

If I dont see some serious options coming out Ae 2012…I dont know If I can hang with DeeJay…Tired Of having to make awesome reads at some dumb risk…Or characters basically laughing at DeeJay’s Zoning game…

Damn I’m going to a tourney tomorrow (possibly) but I don’t have good anti chun strats. Wish me luck.

No sobats when she has meter…Sun kick can link to super too so watch out for that. Daknut told me patience is the key :frowning:

I just played possibly the best SF I’ve ever played the past half hour. I had a 2 game set against a very solid Ryu player. The first game, I played if safe for the first round, but got hit by an ultra combo and lost. The second round I started to be more aggressive, but a few key mistakes (namely trying to focus EX fireballs in the corner-MAJOR BRAIN FART) led to me losing the second round pretty bad. I was excited to find someone above decent online, so I immediately ran back to the list to see if they had returned and sure enough. So the second game starts and it’s pretty much a replay of the first round. I lost by running into a focus attack and getting hit by an ultra combo. Second round my reactions are ON POINT. Every jump in gets punished, every bad fireball gets Knee Shot into full combo. Dumb blockstrings into fireball get punished by EX Sobat. I win, but we’re both stacked on Super bar. That worries me, because it takes away my ability to lk sobat in blockstrings, or randomly in footsie situations. But fortunately I get him to waste it. The third round goes by really fast, we’re both down to low life. I A2A kneeshot him and walk under and hit him with jab jab, mk x lk sobat. So now he’s at a sliver. I miss-time my kneeshot and he throws me. Low life situation. I block his mixup and tech his throw. I’m fully expecting an EX Fireball, but it doesn’t come out. So I let go of my charge and risk a jump-in. Throw gets teched, and we bounce back. And bam, EX fireball. I knee shot over it and jab jab wins the game.

And the next two guys both get Dash Ultra’s for their troubles.

It was good times, man.

Lol. Damn you remembered the fights in all their glory huh?

I need some good days like this…I usually go half and half. Like today I did great against most of the people I played…Then I played someone on my friendslist and it seemed like I got hit by a thousand Focus attacks.

Just got invited to make money on YouTube. Definitely going to be putting videos up soon. Going to need your support.

What? Hell Yeah!..What exactly is gonna be goin down?

Basically i can start sending videos to youtube to be monetized. There will be ads. It says it can’t be video game footage though.

Last time I checked you can have video game footage but you need to have commentary over it to make it a creative work rather than just straight up match footage. Something similar to the let’s play videos that people do.

ooo well i do commentary on some of them so i’ll probably have to do it over all of them now.

Well I was doing some research about it a few months back and those where some of the terms and conditions, but things could have changed since the introduction of Bill S.978 in the states. Also remember I don’t live in the US so Australia’s terms and conditions could be different, double check before you put up footage because youtube is pretty harsh when it comes to kicking people out of the add sense program.

I am looking forward to your DeeJay videos though as I learnt quite a bit form the DeeJay vs. Rose ones you put up a while back.

Great news, Jcool, you definitely deserve it. Don’t forget to link here when your content comes out!

Couple thousand views and you can buy a snickers!
