Dealing with Losses

I get mad and my anger causes me to lose the next match with even stupider mistakes, making me even angrier and dumber for the next round. Eventually I figure it out and stop playing for awhile.

If I lose a close one I look for someone to do a shoryuken on (in real life).

vs. Flowchart Kens (and occasionaly spamming Akumas though some don’t do it) - I will scream and cuss myself out for falling for the ridiculously known and telegraphed move set.

vs. everyone else - I will say…DAMNIT…and then try to figure out how to get better.

I’ve also noticed that if I go into training mode for a “warm up” for a few minutes, I tend to do better than going cold into online play. I guess at my age, you just forget how to play from one day to the next… :wasted:

when i was a kid i remember getting SO mad trying to beat M. Bison in Super SFII that i put my SNES controller in my mouth and bit it as hard as i possibly could. of course, that was after pounding on the floor, yelling and pulling my hair.

now, especially with SFIV, i’ve gotten to the point where i can usually take a loss constructively. sometimes my head just isn’t in the right place to play SFIV, and sometimes (read: a lot of the time) the other guy’s just flat out better than me. if i find myself starting to get really angry i just turn it off and play something else. i’m a grown-ass man and while that competitive edge is important and part of the fun of any fighting game, i’ve got no business allowing a video game to add stress to my life, y’know?

bottom line: if i’m not having FUN, i play something else.

i have the habit of running my fingers over the joystick buttons vigorously after a round loss, also the occasional random body scratch like im some crack addict, lol.

a friend of mine used to give any nearby door (or a pillow) a few right hooks to vent his anger, scary yet funny shit!

no biggie though, i learn from my fuckups and move on.

i take a ride on the h train

I get pissed when I lose to some of my friends that I know I can beat…haha. Usually though I take every loss as a learning experience. Last night i fought an amazing Gen…I honestly was so amazed at the things he could do I just froze and didn’t know what to do. lol.

I yell : “Goddamnit !” and vent my frustration on the next fight, that I lose also, since I’m upset.

I used to punch pillows and scream. Then I turned to whiskey. Now I drink whiskey as I punch pillows and scream.

Generally I enjoy losing vs better players and the most frustrating loss would be because I f’d up an input and whiff. I have a friend who has been like 20-3ing me since SF came out so I get ridiculously better every session. I just must keep the smoke flowing to keep the spirits up and continue enduring after like an hour of losing.

I hope that the person sticks around and plays a few more games with me. Usually after 2-3 games any frustration I have is gone, and I become much more aware of patterns/mistakes on both sides.

Then I win.

Dude my when i was 13 playing ssf2ce on Genesis i was losing to 8 star bison like crazy and my little sister who was like 8 beat him with chun li, no lie. I laughed more than i was pissed, True story.

I only get mad when i miss combos on my Dualshock3 ( sf4 of all games makes me want to get a stick now, i thought GG would have done that.) or i miss a throw break.

If I may give a little advice… what I think you should be doing after a loss is asking yourself “Why did I lose?” What was it about what they did that you could not beat? Write it down on a piece of paper or a notebook and be as detailed as you can about the parts where you got messed up. Come back in a few minutes, an hour or whatever, and set up training mode and try to work on the situation. Do this on matches you win too! Unless you won with 2-3 perfects that fight, you still have things to work on!

Essentially, what I mean is you need to take away things you can learn and improve upon to make you a stronger player all around.

^^this

When I lose to an obviously skilled player, I take it in stride and try to learn more from the encounter… but when I lose to a blatant n00b, I get quietly pissed off. More with myself than anything tho.

Usually fine with losing unless it’s to a total scrub/flow charter then it pisses me off. Random lag spikes -> eating an ultra, gee thx. Pretty bad network code in this, it’s aggravating as shit trying to perform a move, lag spike -> lose charge and get countered. Course I say this after a losing streak of ~15.

I laugh, take a deep breath and actually try on the next match.

Highly depend on the kind of opponent I play with. I know I will get a frustrated if I lose to a srk spamming ken in a ‘slideshow environment’.

But usually when it is lag free I will just laugh at my losses, think up new strategies and move on.

What frustrates me the most is the lag, not the win or the loss.

Slap my knee then go on…

nonesense rude-bwoy! i use chun and she kicks ass much of the time!

anyway, the only losses i get mad at are mirror matches lol. something inside me tells me that im the best chun player ever (even though i now i’m not) so i hate to lose to another, especially if they steal my golden outfit lmao!
the other one is comeback wins for example i’d have 80% health and they’d have 10%, then i make one mistake and they bread + butter me up to shame lol hangs head lol
