Dead or Alive 5

DOA1 and 2 came out in arcades. So why were/aren’t there tourney scenes for them?

And they do tourneys on console too, so that’s not really a reason.

Talking about a scene in japan, unless you follow arcade publications back then. It’s a big fat question mark.

That’s way besides the point, DOA was exclusively on X-box which was a very unpopular system in japan. Kinda hard to get a following when the console your on doesn’t garner notoriety.

Well…that’s why I’m asking. But they play and hold tourneys for obscure stuff like Breaker’s Revenge and other games. So I doubt that’s it either.

No…

DOA1 was released to Sega Saturn and Model 2 hardware for arcade (same as VF2) (1). DOA1 Remake was released to PS1. DOA2 was released to Dreamcast and to NAOMI hardware for arcade (same as CvS2, MvC2, etc) (1). DOA2 Hardcore was released to Playstation 2.

The rest were, indeed on Xbox, but 3 and 4 were the only “new” ones while Ultimate was a remake.

Most obscure tourneys I’ve seen are held by Arcades for a set of games like: Mi-Ka-Do. So, it depends on what machines they have.

And, at the peak/height of it’s popularity of the series it became marketed as an X-box brand. That’s when tourneys in general where even on the radar.

Yes, but that doesn’t explain whether or not DOA1/2 had tournies back when they were still new/valid to arcades (released).

EDIT: I Forgot One.

DOA1 and 2 were fairly popular. In fact DOA1 was the brand that got Team Ninja on the map.

Those obscure games that japan has tourneys for made post-posthumously as in much later time than when said games came out.

What landed Team Ninja on the Map was Itagaki’s restructuring of the company for his own development team before DOA even came out. And, DOA 2 graphical engine for Dreamcast [another failed system]. However, Team Ninja didn’t get as big as it did until it made exclusives with Microsoft, which is why their top selling games are all on the original X-box.

So why no tourneys for DOA1/2?

I’m done with this, gonna stick with the explanation that they don’t play it over there unless I see some footage.

I just searched high and low for some and came up with nothing - if there were a scene there would be footage on it. Only thing I got were some KOF vids off of Emil’s channel (not sure how those popped up) and some storymode crap. And the Mikido blog page has never had any that I know of.

You don’t have a scene over there, especially for a game like DOA, and not have information, results or footage on it.

No, the interview on the DOAU2 disc talks about it. I was looking for the interview on YT but it seems its not up. If not, I can record it off my Xbox and upload it right now if anyone wants.

Like I said, the game didn’t get big until DOA 3 and it was on a system the japs didn’t like. You have people mentioning that Japanese playing obscure games to prove that the Japanese will play anything. Despite the fact those scenes are new even if the games themselves are old and most tourneys are hosted by local arcades [since in japan arcades are big enough to have popular inquiry], it doesn’t prove anything. Bottomline is DOA has a scene, japan not being part of that scene doesn’t mean shit.

Uh, yeah it does. Because that’s entirely what I was talking about.

And since we’re on the subject, if there are any other places outside America with a DOA scene, could you tell us?

Yeah, and you were implying that japans plays alot of obscure games. I already touched on that, in the very same post you half-stepped on.

Here’s a taiwan DOA 3.1 tourney:

I should have checked Sorwah’s channel to begin with.

But yeah, my question was simple - do they have a scene in Japan or not? As far as I can see no, and that’s what I was trying to find out. Its irrelevant why or how they play many games over there. The point is they do, and its easier for them to do so. So its strange why I wouldn’t see footage for DOA1/2 at all. DOA3 being more popular on Xbox has absolutely nothing to do with that.

It’s obviously relevant if you can answer why they play many games over there in your own post no less, come correct.

What part of: NO Media Tourneys is so hard to grasp?

Its not hard.

I hate to break it to you, but there’s a whole world outside the internet, dawg. Just because somethings not on Youtube doesn’t mean it’s non-existent. Scary, I know.

I searched more than YT. Came up with this: Dead or Alive Ulimate Tournament Finals - Xbox

So a Japanese player but not necessarily Japanese scene. Anyway, you can look at it as a “burden of proof” thing. No footage or information = didn’t happen. That’s how I roll. In anycase, you’re not really proving me wrong or convincing me that one exists (you’re not even confirming yourself if you think there’s one or not…just that there COULD be) so I’ve lost interest in this “debate”.

Maybe the guys over at DOAcentral know something…

Funny thing is that I was never out to confirm anything, I stated from the get go that it was a big question mark. Your entire assumption rest on convenience of info from the net, and you couldn’t even find a non-us based tourney until I posted one no less. So, even if you searches outside of Youtube it really doesn’t say much.

Wasn’t searching for non-us based tourneys. Specifically for Japanese matches and tournaments. When I asked you about other countries I hadn’t searched. So me making note of Sorwah’s channel was because if I was looking for Japanese matches I should have checked there.

But if you weren’t confirming it and was just a big question mark from the start than 1) I guess I owe an apology for the assumption and 2) I still stand by the burden of proof in that no footage and info = it didn’t happen. So as far as I’m concerned it didn’t happen. Big question mark and didn’t happen = the same thing for me. DOA isn’t even obscure, if there’s any significant scene there should be info and vids on it.

I also looked up on Japanese DOA scenes… nothing… If DOA 3 and 4 had an arcade release, it may have been different, but I doubt many people play(ed) DOA in Japan for that reason.

edit : Glad I broke up the back and forth posts between you two.
