I went to an Internet cafe/regular cafe yesterday afternoon to work on a project with my study group, and I noticed that they had a rack of free comics with a sign at the top that said “take one.” It was mainly a bunch of early/mid-90s junk. Some guy my age, or more likely the mom of some guy my age, must have unloaded their childhood collection or something.
However, amidst that stuff, I found an issue of The Adventures Of The Outsiders from 1986. I didn’t even really think about it; I grabbed it.
I’ve flipped through it once without really reading it. It appears to have something to do with Nazis. I really just grabbed it because I have an unexplainable affinity for the way comics from that era are colored. I don’t know if it’s because of some subliminal childhood association, but it seems like color technology was just advanced enough at that point to produce an odd, distinctive pallette. I can’t explain it in words, but no other era of comics has those colors.
Lots of those old DC and Marvels were printed on that cheap newsprint, but the '80s were when people started making breakthroughs in printing and coloring. Like if you check out '80s comics printed on quality Baxter stock paper, they look pretty good actually. Almost as good as or occasionally better than today’s stuff. I think the paper quality was the difference maker, though.
I bet a lot of colorists back in the '80s knew what they were doing with new technology and stuff, but not all comics had the great paper. So maybe their colors ended up getting the dot printing, so even though their color schemes were awesome, they got dulled down because of the cheap paper DC and Marvel tended to prefer.
Dot coloring, baby - WHERE AMAZING HAPPENS. Just look at any Ron Lim Powerblast circa 1990.
I am willing to bet this is the case. Richmond Lewis’s coloring on Batman: Year One has this look that I’m talking about. Not the recolored version, but the original version. Lewis is obviously an excellent colorist, so the ink absorption of the paper with the dot printing is likely the x-factor in producing this odd coloring scheme.
Yeah WHOA at young Dick Grayson Instant Messaging people. Dang DC’s new timeline is insane. Still, Amy Wolfram worked on the TT cartoon so I’m expecting good things.
Lmao at that strip, Bruce Wayne seeing Pokemon…ahh. I dislike the idea of Bruce being 30, I like the idea of him being 40, still good enough to fight crime and he’s aged.
I think it’s the goofy look on Bruce’s face that really clinches it. Like, “Yeah, it’s Friday, and nothing bad ever happens on Friday.”
I agree. With the exception of the Year One era, which is obviously going to mean a younger Bats, Batman is ideally a slightly older, cranky bastard with a lot of crime fighting experience under his belt.
I don’t remember if I said it in this thread or another one but when Tomasi takes over Nightwing he is going to treat Batman / Bruce like Dick Grayson’s older brother and Alfred like Dick Grayson’s father. He feels under DC’s current timeline that Batman is only 10 years older than Dick, that he can be a father figure to Tim but not to Dick Grayson. Sounds crazy but I can dig it…
All Star Batman was a riot as always this week!
Morrison’s Batman story was really good too. I’m liking this Ra’s crossover a lot.
Teen Titans was great. McKeever is the man!
Freddy vs. Jason vs. Ash is hella funny, and gory too.
In Teen Titans Go! they hinted at Slade returning, he hasn’t been used in the comic at all after the last ep aired. J. Torres, the writer has said before he uses either Slade or Red X he would have to speak to Murakami about how to use them.
Teen Titans Go!
Spoiler
Wasn’t Slade but Ravager made an appearance! She removed her Slade Helmet and she has two eyes and all. She mentioned how she is Slade’s daughter. In the end they turned her around and made her a Titan. It’s interesting because so far the comic hasn’t called out Jericho as Slade’s son yet.
Whoa Countdown Arena was bad IMHO. How the heck do you handle two three on three fights in one comic dang that’s rushing it. I think I’ll just pick up the Green Lantern comic to see Bruce Wayne Lantern own the other poor fools and then I’m out…
The Ra’s storyline has been really good so far! Justice League fighting off the Injustice League was lots of fun too!
