DC Comics Thread

So I just read this last page and it seems everything in the N52 is either kinda bad, bad or really bad.

I was on Comic Vine and Earth 2 caught my eye - any opinions on that?

Earth 2, that the James Robinson comic with the gay Green Lantern? Would anyone be surprised if I said I hate that comic (even though I haven’t read it)?

Gay Green Lantern in the Earth 2 series?

knothxbye.

I liked Starman but I have to say that James Robinson is dangerously close to reaching that point where he’s used up all the goodwill he earned from that series. His recent comics that I can remember have been crap. His Justice League was way messy, I couldn’t finish reading that junk. And that Arsenal comic where he got his armed amputed and then got high and beat up a bum with a dead cat? I guess that was hilarious, but I honestly couldn’t tell if it was supposed to be intentional comedy or if Robinson actually thought it was character development or gravitas.

I swear to god Robinson and JMS fell off pretty fucking hard around the same time.

Also Flash is really fucking good but Teen Titans #0 almost used all my goodwil up with DC. Some straight bullshit.

So enlighten me. All I’ve read are complaints.

Ah, man, JMS. That guy definitely used up all his goodwill with me. He’s in the negative zone now. I’m at the point now where I’m legitimately questioning his entire past history of comics work. I suspect his comics (well, the ones he bothered to finish - he has a terrible propensity to bail out on a series when he loses interest, before he reaches anything resembling a satisfying conclusion) rely more on the strength of his artists rather than his own skills as a writer. Supreme Power is probably my favorite thing from him and a lot of that is due to Gary Frank’s best work ever in that series. I even reread some JMS Amazing Spider-Man stuff recently and I didn’t enjoy it as much as I used to.

So which are the main Batman and Superman books? Might give those a shot and I’d like to check out the Joker arc that’s coming.

Posting this from the Lounge del Toro is apparently working on getting a JLD movie made: Heaven Sent.

Gotta say that I really enjoyed bats #!3 and most of the post 0 issue stuff. I’m dropping batwing though but aside from that my collection is still what it was since the new 52 launch. I also gotta add that for whatever reason I just burst out laughing in talon #0 when the baby court of owl member said"I want to watch"as they were performing a execution…if talon can provide with more moments like that it will easily become a new favorite lol.

Batman #14 was really good but I don’t like Joker’s new look.

Oh well I don’t like anyone else’s redesigns in the 52 Reboot either so at least they’re consistent…

Just read the New 52 Batman: Court of Owls volume 1 hardback. It wasn’t bad. I’m not particularly enamored with the whole notion of an underground secret society that’s been running things for hundreds of years and Batman is just now learning about their existence. It’s not my favorite concept but it’s something I can live with if the execution is clever.

I did read Scott Snyder’s pre-New 52 Batman comics and thought those were pretty solid. I think he does a good job with setting a certain tone and mood, but I feel like he tends to write his protagonist into a hole, and then comes up with some unsatisfying ways to help the protagonist overcome the obstacle. He also likes to put his heroes in crazy deathtraps; not sure how I feel about that. I remember in the pre-New 52, he had Batman all chained up and hanging over a shark tank or something. It didn’t seem like it was supposed to be an ironic, tongue-in-cheek kinda thing, but I don’t know.

In Court of Owls, Snyder has Batman stuck in a super elaborate labyrinth for like a week, being hunted by an assassin. All it took for him to overcome that was to just punch the guy hella hard, basically. I’m not even gonna address the absurdity of a secret society building a gigantic labyrinth beneath Gotham City. But, like, even though Batman has just been stuck in that maze for days, drinking drugged water, all messed up, wounded, and malnourished and stuff, he still somehow has the capacity to overpower his foe physically. And this is right after Talon just whoops on him in front of the Court of Owls. You’d think Batman would have gotten some bones broken or some massive internal bleeding from the beating Talon gives him (even putting him through a wall at one point). But it’s like Batman just has a special button where he goes, “Okay, bub, you’ve taken your best shot - now it’s MY turn” right before he kicks someone’s ass.

Greg Capullo’s art isn’t too appealing. Like Jim Cheung, all his characters have the same face. Unlike Jim Cheung, Capullo’s art is just overly '90s with all the crosshatching. His layouts are also messy at times. (And not in a Chris Bachalo, purposeful, designy way, either.) There were a couple of pages where I had to reread carefully to figure out exactly what happened.

His talking heads scenes are almost as boring as bland David Finch’s or Mark Bagley’s. It’s not the worst art in the world or anything, and there are a few panels here and there that look fine. I can’t help thinking that for a story with such an emphasis on the city and architecture, how much more intriguing the whole package would look if Guy Davis or someone had illustrated it.

Overall, I was entertained enough by the book to keep an eye out for the next volume.

Still need to give Talon a look.

Finally read all the Batgirl issues out right now, good sweet lord Gail what have you done. Should have just rage quit after the first issue and the whole “You were always meant to be Batgirl” thing.

Another thing that was wack about Court of Owls is the idea that Talon is Dick Grayson’s ancestor. Like it’s not dramatic enough that this new supervillain can kick Batman’s ass, he has to be related to his ward somehow. There’s just something kind of unnecessary about that, and ridiculous, too. I hate it when they force new villains to have some sort of direct relation to the hero. It’s just contrived. When we see you straining to make the connection, then it doesn’t have any weight.

After trying to read the new Batman event, I’ve come to the conclusion that I just don’t care enough about them for it to make any difference. Either that or the story is just really uninteresting. Think I’ll just start Aquaman and some of the Superman-family books and see how those go.

those are all worse turds, from dc, if bats aint doing it for ya,almost everything else is several notchs below the bat family titles

I don’t think I can ever try Batwing so long as Judd Winick is writing it.

Gail Simone talks about being taken off Batgirl.

I read some earth 2, its in that wierd zone ,some writers take comics that have not established itself yet and slowplay it from the start, they usually get canceled after a year or booted from the title, the snail races, like ultimate xmen was for a while, where you bought it and it seems like nothing happened…earth 2 is stuck in that feeling of they dont know wtf to do and each issue… if i did not get afew copies of earth 2 free i would drop it from my pull for a while and see if like ultimate xmen, if they can make shit happen and feel like you got your $ worth, but its far from being as misshandles as teen titans

an is hal jordan gonna be back maining greenlatern or is zak branagin or what ever the new main focus?
