DC Comics Thread

i’m not a huge fan of this character myself. but i trust johns. i have faith in him. he’s a mini bru. all will work out for the best

you are crazy…SBP is the best, perhaps only decent “new” villain in comics from any company in the last ten years

The thing I don’t like is how shallow and childish he is. Maybe that’s the way he’s supposed to be written, but it just bothers me that the be-all, end-all villain of the DCU is essentially a kid who has the power to throw an unstoppable tantrum. It makes the stories involving him feel really silly. It’s as though being superstrong and superfast are all it takes to be top tier villain; that, and the ability to rip the limbs off and kill forgotten, D-list heroes in a throwaway panel.

Add that to the way that so many comics in the DCU nowadays are trying to remind us how EPIC and CRUCIAL each page is… I just lost my emotional investment in the proceedings.

See, the villains I like most are the ones that toy with your mind a little. Like when Johns wrote Flash, he made Captain Cold and Mirror Master such guys. You never really knew what to expect from them. Or when Johns wrote Avengers and made Red Skull a villain that genuinely pissed you off. With SBP, all you know is that this is a character who is going to fuck shit up and almost no one can hope to stop him. That doesn’t really interest me, I guess. I don’t know, I’m just not into that.

I guess it’s that I dont really consider him the be-all, end-all villain, just the most fun/interesting. Like you said, he has only killed some d-listers and Superboy. And DC has always elevated mediocre villains into the top tier: bane and doomsday anyone?

man, i was hoping for a SPB And black adam rematch… that would have been great; but not now that he bitched out. oh well, crazy shit is going to happen and i’ll be reading it.

in regards to the Super Boy Prime appearances recently, he’s been in various green lantern/green lantern corps issues randomly… just so you didn’t forget he was there until this happened i guess.

SBP?, WOW.

Black Adam, Maybe, but SBP?, hells no.

and with Sinestro stepping into the limelight this month, even BA could be yesterday’s news before long.

Yeah, I don’t like Bane and Doomsday, either. Both of them were basically just created to do a lot of damage to Batman and Superman. There was no depth to them at all. They were just presented as unsophisticated “destroyer” type characters who basically fulfilled the role of living plot device. Just because they played a major role in two big-name '90s storylines doesn’t make them top tier in my mind.

then besides the joker, who else is top tier? maybe sinestro? especially after his ownage to a certain for GL yesterday…

Well, it depends on what the standard is for “top tier.” Because there’s top tier in terms of in-universe impact and then there’s top tier in terms of real life.

In-universe impact top tierness would go to Bane and Doomsday, sure. Because they made a big impact on Batman and Superman. Beating the crap out of a major character might be enough to rocket a nobody into top tierness, but it doesn’t necessarily make for a great, or even good, story.

But in real life, I still think those guys suck as characters. Joker and Two-Face are two of the top tier Batman villains and Luthor and Brainiac are two of the top tier Superman villains. I mean, how can anyone even say that Bane is in the same tier as Joker or Two-Face? That just makes no sense to me. Not to say that Bane and Doomsday are completely worthless; I’m sure some clever writer down the line someday can find something useful for them and make them more interesting.

DC’s Top Tier Villains:

Luthor
Joker
Black Adam (Currently Depowered, but not to be underestimated)
Sinestro
Flash Rogues (as a whole)
Darkseid
Despero
Starro

Those are the only truly MAJOR threats running free on the DCU.

most other threats are currently contained.

what about deathstroke

Didio finally talks about that broken Statue of Liberty image from a while back. Minor spoilers for what’s going on in DC comics right now. Sinestro is coming to NYC oooh… There’s a possible hint about something regarding Superman and Wonder Woman but I won’t say it outloud…

I think you guys are judging SBP too quickly. He’s been a villain for like 4 issues of Infinite Crisis, and that’s it. Johns pretty much made him the way he is for a reason, and Johns is a great writer, so I trust he won’t disappoint us.

Just read Sinestro corps, and wow. Even though I was spoiled about who was coming back, I was still amazed.

Teen Titans was kinda boring, I think I should wait till McKeever starts, but I know I’ll still be buying :frowning:

yeah sano im not reading that

Oh shit!

yeah, Deathstroke is to the non-powered heroes, what Darkseid is to Superman.

and FUCK Didio…the man thinks a death every other month is edgy and cool.

nevermind that every character he’s killed has a legion of fans.

and he promises us one more before the end of the year, like we’re gonna get excited about it…fuck that noise.

so help me, if it’s Kyle Rayner, I’ll be pissed like a motherfucker.

Finally, in regards to Sano’s link, I think Didio is pulling this all out of his ass…that wasn’t Bart in the picture until Bart died.

Bart has YELLOW EYES. It’s one of his key distinguishing features…Barry (much like the Flash in the picture) has BLUE eyes, and I think Wally has brown eyes.

so to say “That’s Bart” is bullshit, because if it was, then they were deliberately misleading us by changing his eye color.

Lol the entire thing is full of spoilers. Obviously not major ones but a lot of teaser stuff…

EDIT: Spoiler and talk about Sinestro Corps with Johns -

Yeah, that’s the thing. From reading stories such as Infinite Crisis, it’s like we (the readers) are just supposed to accept the fact that SBP is a top tier villain. But he hasn’t really proven himself in the story. That’s what I don’t like- that artificial boosting of a character into the stratosphere without any adequate development. It’s a very old-school style of comic book writing that doesn’t grab me.

I like Johns, but I just haven’t dug any of his work since around the time Identity Crisis began. All that Crisis stuff made him bad. Green Lantern’s getting interesting with the new mythology he’s creating, though.

DC stuff I read:

Teen Titans - Not really interested in Amazons attacking…

Teen Titans Go! - Lol 2 good Raven vs. evil Raven!

Ninja Scroll - Villain looked better on the cover than he did in the actual comic. Story was kind of tight though.

Countdown - I dunno man. There was a major build up for something in Countdown and then it went down in Flash’s comic. Not really feeling that. They should of showed it again from a different perspective in Countdown. Just my 2 cents…

dc I currently follow (in trades, of course):

Checkmate
Green Lantern Corps
JLA
Jonah Hex
Shadowpact
Superman (busiek/pacheco)
All-Star Superman
Teen Titans (until Johns is done)
and the IC related stuff, so right now that is 52

I never liked Hal Jordan but after the sinestro corps special Im wondering if I should go back and pick up the johns GL trades. I already have rebirth but I dont want to miss anything, even though kyle >>>> hal

I thought DoomsDay was still around, since he could never die?
