Superman Blackest Night was cool this week! Smallville’s getting wrecked heh!
Too bad Wednesday Comics came to a close, I’ll miss it. Kamandi had the best ending. Flash and Metamorpho had the wierdest endings lol! Supergirl ending was funny too. All around great series and I hope they do another.
Remember during the height of the Cassandra Cain Batgirl run, they were all setting her up to be the next in line for the mantle? I mean it was never going to happen, but just the story ideas from that direction were pretty cool, trying to make her a more complete well rounded character. Batman was teaching her all the detective skills, Barbara was teaching her how to not be insane, all that stuff - I really enjoyed those stories back then. Great character that was really badass while allowing a ton of stories for character development.
But Kelly Puckett was the only single writer that could write a decent Batgirl story for some reason - or maybe DC just slapped a line of bad writers on it afterwards and never gave her a decent creative team after that. Like they had her fall in love with Superboy…? God, it was so forced and silly.
DC’s handling of this character just really bummed me out. That wacky flip where she turned heel (which was later reconned into some stupid Deathstroke brainwashing thing) really sucked for me. One Year Later fucked up so many properties for DC.
In a way it was a lot like how Green Lantern fans got jerked around for the last few decades - first they lost Hal Jordan after he turned into a bad guy, which was heavy. Then they pushed this wussy artist fruit Kyle Rayner, which no one originally liked. And then when they warmed up to him finally, they bring back Hal Jordan again and bump Kyle to second string - he has to share time with Guy Gardner and John Stewart. Like all those years of stories you read with Kyle finally getting out from under the shadow of Hal Jordan and becoming his own man as the #1 Green Lantern? They were all meaningless, because here’s Hal again, fuck Kyle Rayner, he’s back to #2!
Geoff Johns had step up Kyle Rayner as the better, faulted Green Latern from the start, too. And Grant Morrison was following the same idea in JLA, which I enjoyed a lot. During JLA (Rock of Ages or something…) he meets the future Sandman, and he basically goes “You are better than Hal Jordan - because you know Fear.” That was wicked!
But then Rebirth comes along, and all those stories, all that character progression, all those cool ideas about having a Green Lantern that wasn’t just about out-willpowering-everything (like Superman just out-supering everything in a slugfest at the end of every story) went right out the window.
But the funny thing is that there are like virtually no Kyle Rayner fans out there, compared to the guys who like Hal Jordan. I guess only the hardcore Green Lantern fans, who have been reading the book all through this time are the ones affected - everyone else with just a passing interest in the book is now like “Oh SNAP, Hal Jordan’s back!” And that includes me.
It’s a little bit similiar to the Flash property as well - what the fuck is the point of bringing back Barry Allen? Are there seriously people out there that waiting for like 20 years for Barry to come back? DC has such an over-inflated idea of how cool and nostalgic their old characters really are. But at least Wally had already come into his own and was clearly established as a hero himself for a significant period of time, unlike with Kyle Rayner.
But what the hell, isn’t the Spoiler dead? This is not like the original Barbara Gordon coming back in a Batgirl: Rebirth or something - Stephanie Brown was never a better character than Cassandra Cain, this is messed up.
They’re just not religious zealots who form cults and send death threats to creators over comic book storylines so you don’t hear nearly as much about them.
I wish I was prem, as I’d rep the fuck out of you, Apathy-Inc.
I’m not a total Kyle fan. Personally, I just don’t think a sociopath should be propped up as a hero. Hal is a murderer, and that shouldn’t be taken lightly.
I’m a Guy Gardner fan. Kyle was a worthy successor, and he got bumped unfairly. But Kyle is more deserving than Hal, and is a better character morally than Hal.
Public Enemies was pretty dope! Loved the character designs on this one, more than the other DCAU straight to video movies. They made McGuinness’ style work in animation so that in itself was amazing. The voice acting was excellent! Good to hear Kevin Conroy working with Tim Daly and Clancy Brown again! Alilson Mack AKA Chloe in Smallville as Power Girl is another brilliant casting choice by Andrea Romano.
A funny tidbit is that the movie actually time stamps itself! If you look at the cemetary scene theres a grave that says someone lived from ninteen hundred whatever to 2008. I just find this funny because nowadays DC comics do not time stamp themselves the way Marvel does (I actually prefer this method over Marvel’s). So yeah this story now has to take place in 2008 and beyond, it’s most likely happening right now in 2009. Oh did Lex Luthor beat Obama in his run for presidency 'cuz DAMN…
The downside is the story feels like it’s all over the place. I think it could’ve used some more fine tuning. Also I wish they took this opportunity with all the fight scenes to interpret the battles in different ways that we haven’t seen before. Maybe even turn the violence up a notch or have a few B-Listers looking more bad ass. I’d rather the fights be boiled down to some bigger and much longer brawls then a few random quicky ones.
The good far outweighs the bad so it’s a must see most def. I still enjoyed both the Green Lantern and Wonder Woman flicks better since they had much better stories IMHO, but Public Enemies is solid.
The trailer for that Halo Legends anime thing on the disk looks dope and I can’t wait for that to drop! Looks like it will be like the Animatrix or Gotham Knight, different stories in anime style. HA I don’t think of anime when I think of Halo, who does? Ah well looks purty. :lovin:
And the preview for the upcoming Crisis flick looks great! Mark Harmon as Superman is another brilliant choice! Billy Baldwin actually sounds good as Batman! McDuffie’s writing without DC Editorial on his ass just like the ol’ JLU days! 2010 is too far away…
Don’t forget James Woods is doing the voice of Owlman in that movie coming up also.I’m going to Wal-Mart this weekend to buy it.Give me something to watch over the weekend since I don’t have cable anymore
Comic Shop News this week has a big picture of what looks like the new JLA that will appear in issue 38 on October 21 (or at least the new members will start showing up the way these things go). I spot -
Mon-El
Batman (Dick Grayson)
Donna Troy
Starfire
Atom
Booster Gold
Cyborg
Green Lantern (looks like Hal)
Green Arrow
Doctor Light (Kimiyo Hoshi, female)
Guardian
Congo Bill
Still needs a speedster but all and all not a bad line up!
I like Clinty’s entertaining post about Batgirl. I’d almost forgotten there was a new Batgirl comic that just recently came out - at this point, does anyone actually care? I sure don’t, but I hope we get more funny Clinty posts about the topic.
And that new JLA lineup - am I supposed to care? Is it just me, or is every superteam nowadays basically just the new writer’s “fantasy team” come to fruition? I got nothing but love for The Golden Age and Starman, but James Robinson’s other JLA comic (what was it called, Cry for Justice or something?) looks like fanfiction. On the other hand, at least he’s using the ASIAN Dr. Light. I wouldn’t be surprised if James Robinson is one of those white dudes who has an Asian girlfriend, though - I hope Carpet Lint does a background check!
The inker and colorist they have for Bagley aren’t doing him any favors, either. Now, instead of looking like Mark Bagley art, his stuff just looks like every other single middle-of-the-road DC superhero comic. Weak.
Has DC announced a Blackest Night collection yet?I am so behind on all this stuff that I have to use wikipedia to be kept up to date. The one thing I do know is in Blackest Night Titans
Blackest Night Titans
Spoiler
Black Lantern Hawk kills the new Hawk & she RISES & the new Dove now has to contend with 2 Black Lantern Hawks.Donna Troy is on the verge of becoming one also as her dead son bites her as her dead husband watches on.
We still aren’t 100% sure that it’s Jason under the hood. Going by earlier Morrison interviews he said something along the lines of don’t be so sure it’s Todd. Could be screwing with us. Who knows.
