Well, it’s hard to argue in favor of Hunter for most casual players. Unless you really want to use Huitzil, Pyron, or Donovan, you will generally like Savior better because it is a much more hype, exciting game. I know people like Hunter, but casuals want to play an exciting game, and Savior does a really good job of making every match fun. Most people just wind up seeing Hunter as Savior’s slow, boring older brother.
Well i think ppl need to actually look into it, give it a chance. Ppl assume it’s MVC3vanilla and that Savior is UMVC3, therefore why play the older, right? Wrong, turns out both games are very different. I’ve had alot of fun finding the differences between each character thanks to this release and I kinda prefer some of the Hunter versions like Demitri. Was never a huge fan of dark forces anyways, so gimmicky. Some are good don’t get me wrong, but I always felt there were better things you could do with your bar. Tech blocking is cool I admit but meh, it’s not a make or break for me. If DS4 comes true and doesn’t have it, I won’t care, if they do, whatever still don’t care.
What I like about Hunter is the pacing, you can be very aggressive or you can space and or turtle, little bit of both worlds. Hunter is more of a SFA then SF2 cause you don’t whore out fireballs in SFA all-day. Where Savior is like the Marvel cross-over games. Which again, yeah I get it, people love those. But hey ppl still like slower paced games (compared to Marvel) like 3S and SFIV, so why not Hunter? I don’t mean to complain, I’m just saying people need to give it a chance. And on a unrelated note I always preferred the music/presentation of Hunter more. Fetus of God? No thanks.
I hate to just blurt this out like this but after Capcom saying that they are stopping the HD rereleases I’m wondering if we’ll ever get a new Darkstalkers.
And if we did say, get a new Darkstalkers, shouldn’t Capcom aim to make it as successful monetarily as BlazBlu for instance? As nice as that series looks and plays I feel like that’s the level of quality and the level of business Capcom should expect from a new Darkstalkers. I don’t see another DS being as big as any SF so why bother pushing to make it so. I think a new DS should be like the bad ass black sheep in the family (I mean is that not what it is already?). I’m just worried that Capcom executives are looking at things from a purely “what will make us the most money in the shortest amount of time” stand point instead of trying to learn how to turn a profit on a less popular series.
I would think Hunter would be a bit easier to get into for casuals. I mean, it’s been said for a long time that Savior’s a somewhat difficult game to get into due to the speed and such. The lack of info available is probably hurting Hunter as well. Savior has some good resources such as the Mizuumi wiki, but there isn’t much out there for Hunter.
But you are complaining and YOU need to go out there and try to get people to play it. There has been a room for that game on GGPO for the longest with people who play savior and hunter that might take a general interest in the game. If you played VSAV you would also understand you can space and turtle. Not just mindless mashing. Try and play with Jed, Dyne, Rotanibor, or Mar and see how great hunter can be!
Set up matches and discuss the game. We even post the latest shit from Japan(yes, I said ‘latest’, this game does still have a following over there). I don’t have the time or temperament to try to convince people to play any game. The only thing I tell people is to play for more than five minutes and see if you like it. Its been said a billion times the two games are very different although I will say motherfuckers overstate Hunter’s “slowness” to a hyperbolic degree. The game is not slow. Try it and see.
It all about what appeals to you as a player. Also Morrigan is way better and more fun to use in Hunter so if she is your waifu or whatever the fuck then play Hunter idiot.
This is why I kinda don’t want a new one because I’m afraid it’ll come out it’ll be good, but no DLC or future updates or anything kinda like UMVC3 because of sales. I’d rather not set myself up for disappointment. Cause yeah this game is the black sheep, it has a decent following in Japan but ppl in America never gave 2 shits, dunno why.
Would actually not play a fighting game because it doesn’t get regular updates? That’s just strange…
Also as far as American’s never caring about DS, my theory is they never cared cause they weren’t even aware it existed. It’s not that people just chose SF, it’s that very few people have actually played DS in this country. If a DS came out it should actually have advertising. And probably a bunch of extra modes and cutscenes and stuff since game journalists have now been convinced that sort of thing is what makes a good fighting game.
Trust me I don’t need thousands of updates, what I mean is lack of support just in general. Again going back to UMVC3, there was a possibility of a update and what not, but in the end nothing unlike SFIV. Now it didn’t bother me because I don’t care much for UMVC3. But I understand that many ppl were pushing for it and it was a big deal. At the same time CAPCOM shot themselves in the foot regarding that title. I just don’t want to give my hopes up that DS4 comes out then 6 months later CAPCOM just abandons it due to lack of sales.
Fucking game journalists, yeah. I don’t mind the extras but they’re usually nothing good. 90% of the art would be stuff from old instruction manuals and what not…WOOO. Then you get endings…WOOO. Now if they commission people to make art exclusively for the game you unlock ok maybe, but let’s get real here. I would like to see the SFIV approach with the cutscene opening for each character, that was neat.
I think part of the problem is Darkstalkers came out at a bad time in 1994. ST was in the arcade when it came out and well it’s SFII, it was still going strong. But it doesn’t come to home consoles until 1996 as a PS1 exclusive. Between the time of the arcade and home release you have SFA on the horizon that comes out to arcade and home consoles in 1995. You also get X-men: Cota and MSH, now c’mon those games/franchises are huge in America. Then that breeds the versus series. Darkstalkers has competition. Then CAPCOM releases Hunter exclusively for Sega Saturn like right after the 1st game. WTF Capcom?! To this day I still cannot figure this out, 1st one is exclusive to PS1 and the second is exclusive to Sega Saturn. WHY?! And then Darkstalkers 3 gets exclusive release in the U.S. to PS1, again wtf? Both consoles owners got hosed in the process.
Darkstalkers 1, people heard about, but that’s about it…
I remember me and all my friends saw the screen shot of it on the pack of the PSX box, like OMG this game looks awesome FUCK STREET FIGHTER!
We bought it, and it was ass… So we went back to playing Alpha 1… Then everybody forgot the game existed.
I also agree with everything @Decepticonus wrote in that second post. DS3 was exclusive to PS1 because Saturn was dead by then.
None of the games sold well enough for Chronicles to come out for DC in the States either, so the game was lost. DS2 on a dead system nobody had, DS1 was trash, and DS3 was overlooked, because by the time it came out, Alpha 1-2 (maybe 3?), Alpha 2 Gold, SF Collection, and a FUCKTON of horrible, horrible PS1 fighters were already out… And I remember the game came out and I was so preoccupied with Soul Blade, I didn’t give a fuck about another 2D game… and I was like, “2D games have bad load times… 3D games not so much… Fuck that”
Wasn’t til years later that I got it, and the coolest part was the color edit mode… more 2D fighters need that.
Afrocole told me he tried to get people to play this game with him back in the day, but many members in the community didn’t give it a chance back then just like they do right now. I found the game by pure chance when I loaded up kaillera for the first time and never went back. We also have had problems with the getting the game exposure from time to time as well.
We had to struggle just to get the game on stream at Final Round. If it was not for Combofiend flexing those mvc players, we would have had to wait till 10pm because CurlyMustache was running so damn slow. Just so many problems with getting old games to get played. Shit pisses me off to no end.
I read that Darkstalkers Resurrection got 7th on Top PSN Downloads ( I was impressed) right beneath a couple of AAA titles and Journey. However, the vice president of Capcom was not impressed and expected much great results. The comments on Eventhubs are hitting all sides of the walls with, “It’s Capcom’s fault”, “$15 is too much”, “Missing characters? whats wrong CrapCom”, “Niche game for niche community”, Is this true? Should I take comments on Eventhubs seriously?
