DarkStalkers 4 Speculation

I don’t quite understand what the problem is with the artistic style for the characters in Street Fighter IV and how it would be applied for a new Darkstalkers game. I don’t think it’s so bad that it can ruin the experience (though I don’t dig the whole “water” effect they went for in Street Fighter X Tekken). I always thought that was just Ikeno’s style. Would anyone care to enlighten me?

The sf4 engine is perfectly fine, your complaining about game design and aesthetics which are unrelated.

I’m just worried it’ll be NEXT GEN!
Anyone else fearing that?
I really don’t want another damn Xbox/PS – early versions always suck, have problems and are over priced.
As of right now when games are announced I just bury my hands in face and fear it is Next gen…

they don’t like what you like.

and no it’s not ikeno’s style. while he is the one depicting stuff, he isn’t the one deciding how it looks. that’s for the creative/art director and producer. look at his stuff for 3S and SF4. they share some things, but they’re quite different. ryu lost like 100lbs of muscle between SF4 and 3S. that’s not ‘style’

IMO, they should learn from the mistakes made with SFxT and not add any extraneous systems and sub-systems. The series, VSav in particular, is known for balance and it’s easier to balance a game that has less extra shit going on. Also, contrary to what they seem to think, adding extra shit does not help newer players, it only adds to their confusion. What helps newer players is giving the game a certain amount of “intuitiveness.” in other words make it so that the game rarely puts them in a situation where they ask “what the hell am I supposed to do?”. The whole “magic series”/“hunter chain” system already helps as it makes for a less execution intensive combo system than SFIV’s links. Other than that, make sure that the rules of the combo system are easy to understand so that players can easily transition from simple magic series chains to more complex stuff. Avoid any sort of arbitrary “execution check” mechanics (i.e. SFIV arbitrary 1 frame links), as most of the time, all these do is annoy both new players and veterans alike.

Other than that, base it on Savior’s “stock” system since it’s pretty unique and helps the game stand out. This system also has a built in “comeback mechanic” so to speak as whoever loses a stock automatically has a life lead (unless they got perfected). If necessary, make it so that the life recovery after between each “round” gets better the less stocks a player has so that while there is some sort of comeback factor, it’s still earned through a win.

Finally we come to speed. While I’ve come to accept that the game will likely not be as fast as Savior (which could get faster than Marvel at times), please make sure that the game is still fast. A good part of this comes from movement, part of VSav’s speed comes from how you are freer to move in that game than in the equivalent SF title of the time (A3, NG). In other words, good jump, good dashes, good air dashes and a faster walkspeed in general.

As has been mentioned, Dimp’s models have been getting better as of later games. Also, the “Ikeno copying Bengus” artsyle they’re using is actually pretty similar to Bengus’ early art for Vampire. People are too used to Bengus and Akiman’s later, smoother art and forget that the original designs were hella chunky with over-exaggerated proportions (big ass hands, giant feet, and in Demitri’s case, biceps bigger than his head).

The only thing i can think of right away is to make Demitris st.HK slightly more solid.

I know Darkstalkers is basically pure rushdown with zoning on the fly. Would anyone be willing to play a new DS4 with a little bit slower gameplay feeling? imho its just a bit too fast as is.

but either way I’ll be playing for sure if/ when it comes out.

I think you mean blockstun.

But no, not really. That’s an exaggeration, they have very little blockstun in general.

^ Yeah my bad!

GGPO is PC only right? I’m currently on a Mac.
I’ve been playing DS1 on PSN but its… kinda weak lol! I probably get DSR when that comes out :stuck_out_tongue:

They need to make sure Hsien-Ko is in this game. I was really looking forward to using her in MvC3 but she wasn’t in that game.

If you feel like learning it, you can try running GGPO on WINE. I believe Diar does that. If you’re willing to buy a copy of Windows, you can also use Bootcamp and dual-boot. The latter is much easier, but obviously costs money.

I actually wouldn’t mind the artstyle from the pitch video, as long as the characters are expressive and transform like in the previous games i’m good.
For the most part I think they should stick to a similar system to VS,why not make it easier on themselves, they don’t need to reinvent the wheel. Add a bunch of new characters, balance it, and have good training/tutorial/online modes and most people will be happy.
I do wonder what type of meter system they will go with, a ultra system like recent capcom games, or a similar one to the old games. Personally I prefer the later, but I’ll be honest I am curious to see what cutscene supers would look like for the darkstalker characters.

Gonna’ play devil’s advocate and represent the casual perspective:

If they’re going to add new characters why not base them off of more contemporary horror icons? The big draw of the franchise is that it’s a horror fighting game with some Asian-centric icons like Cat Girls and hopping vampires. Why not create new characters based on Freddy, Jason, Leatherface, Pinhead, Ash, the Alien and Predator, and etc? Just a thought. Doesn’t have to be a direct rip off -just look at Rick from the Splatterhouse games for example- but it would be interesting to see.

I can tell you this: as a Life long horror fan one of the things a horror fan would love to see would be a horror fighting game featuring all the icons. That hasn’t happened because of rights issues. Capcom could pull it off. Just saying.

Problem is some people enjoy the Darkstalkers art direction a great deal seriously the game animates BEAUTIFULLY even now and dislike the SFIV models greatly, it only makes sense for people to say things like “I hope it does have SFIV art style”…I mean I DO hope it does not have SFIV art style because I simply do not like it. At all. Marvel vs Capcom 3 style would fit better but even that isn’t ideal IMO but we will likely not be getting sprites.

If the Darkstalkers are not dead video is any indication of how the characters will look I wouldn’t worry too much. I can’t wait to see what they’ve done to Talbain.

I think Capcom needs to rethink their approach to monetizing fighting games. Take a look at the success of MK9. Netherrealms went out of their way to jam pack the game with tons of content on the disc. They even gave away free alt costumes after release. Hopefully Capcom changes their approach with DS4.

Hmmm maybe I can install it at work lol…

I’m not that worried about that. I predict a march 2014 release date and everyone expects the next gen to launch christmas 2013. During the first year or so most games will be released for both new and old consoles. There are exceptions(mainly Ubisoft junk), but I don’t think Capcom wants to miss out on sales for the old consoles.
By the way Darkstalkers is pretty lucky: it might be the first fighting game on the new consoles. At first people will buy EVERYTHING on new consoles(which is why most game companies wait for the next gen to launch their new IPs, and that’s why we get Gears of War 4, Halo 4, etc.), so just being there should sell it.

I could see a “slasher” character. Come up with a cool original mask and signature weapon and there you go, new character. i think one for the genre is good enough though (IMO). As for the Alien I think Pyron was supposed to represent Aliens, but If they were to add one a 50’s style alien would be my pick (I like the xenomorph, but being a pure killing machine based on instinct doesnt leave room for the over the top personality the characters ooze).

They still need a sorcerer of some sort like a witch or a djinn. They could add a lovecraftian monster like from the thing,or if not that, something based on the blob. Maybe something that is made up of a bunch of little creatures ala critters or the killer tomatoes (maybe some other form of killer produce) stacked into a humanoid shape. Maybe a headless horseman. There are a lot of untapped ideas I would love to see.

I like the idea of a 50’s alien character. Something based on Mars Attacks (the trading cards, not so much the Burton flick) would be interesting. And a character that’s a hybrid of the Alien and Predator could be fun.

I’d love a Van Hellsing type character, even though B.B. Hood is there. And maybe an evil scientist type character, similar to Dr. Baldhead.
