Darkstalkers#3 Discussion
Alright, just picked it up from the comic shop today.
It’s moving along nicely. Introduces Felicia and Talbain, and their interaction was definately interesting. I found myself wishing Talbain was a little more bitter and stubborn.
I thought Kevin Lau was a good fill-in for Alvin. The colors on his stuff were also really nice. The couple pages Alvin had seemed a little muddy. But I’ve found that a lot of the times it’s the print job.
Anyone else pick it up?

He’s in the back up of this issue, and is talked about in the first.
He’s also on a Joe Mad powerfoil coming up too.
I liked the Chemistry between Felicia and Talbain in this issue. I hope we see more of them soon.
One question remains though… How did Felicias feet fit into those shoes?
I thought it was a very good issue, nice change of pace building up characters like Felicia and Gallon(Talbain). Seems everyone from Hong Kong Comics, to the Anime, to Mangas and no this comic pair these two together as buddies. Games never imply it though. I guess it’s the whole cat and dog thing.
This issue was fun. Kevin Lau pencils Felicia nicely and Gary Yeung did another great job with the colours. I thought Ken Siu-Chong did a nice job with the dialogue too.
This issue does not progress Pyron’s coming to Earth. Rather, much like how issue 2 did with Donovan and Anita, this issue introduces to the reader Felicia and Gallon’s motivations and explores their personalities a bit. The intolerance of Darkstalkers by humans reminds me of themes explored in books like X-Men, which is nostalgic for me, since I use to collect the X-titles. The two interlude pages with Morrigan simply gives another example on how Morrigan hunts.
The back story was done by Alvin Lee. My guess is Udon couldn’t find a guest artist for this issue. I think that in the event that a guest artist can’t be found, forgoing the back story and extending the main one (like in SF # 6) would be a good choice. Back stories in DS and SF are meant to showcase the art talents of another artist outside of the book. To me, it defeats the purpose when the main artist of the book does the back story as well.
Overall a nice fun issue.
PS Sorry It’s always me that points these things out but “Demitri” was spelled incorrectly as “Demetri” in the title of the back story and in the editorial letter.
What would really drum up the interaction between Jon and Felicia would be if Felica has a human boyfriend, and ol’ JT sees that he’s no good, just stringing Felicia along for his own purposes, and may even be a catwoman murderer. Maybe Jon goes for a stroll, finds a murdered catwoman in the local park, calls the cops before coming “home”. Later, Felicia’s boyfriend comes over and Jon notices that the only scent he found on the corpse that wasn’t the Jane Doe’s belonged to THIS guy. Dun dun Duuuuuuun. And in this issue’s back-story, having Demitri’s true form only show in deep shadows was tight!!
That sounds like it would get a tiny bit off course story wise. I have no doubts something along those lines will happen with them.
Say, someone offers to help Felicia or give her a job but really has bad intentions and Talbain sees that.
I kinda doubt they’d go so far as to establish a boyfriend, since there are so many other characters with stories to tell.
Although, they might be able to do it anyways, I dunno.
But something along those lines should definately end up happening.

Well, I just posted here because I also have an interest in this comic…and the JB av is coming back, but first I wanna try a couple others.
Mistake found and comments
I noticed another mistake in this issue … when Jon is talking about his Master being killed he says “that all that changed.” … instead of “then all that changed.” … i got confused for a second … but then i figured it was a typo.
The issue was awsome … the backup story was really cool too … the art is my favorite … i know that normally you showcase new people but i enjoyed it much more in the main story lines art. I really thought the entire issue rocked … i just can’t wait to see Sien-Ko(major SP).
Ohh and Demetri has been in more than just this issue before … he was in the Summer Special too … and he died.
Theyre already changing artists like in SF? Didnt they say they were going to improve the art on SF just the other day? Doesnt that apply to Darkstalkers? In the 3rd issue already… Cant Alvin draw 20 pages a month?!?
It’s a little frustrating but Kevin Lau I think does a good job at resembling the “Capcom style” if you will. And unlike Strret Fighter, the two styles in the issue blend very well(so far at least) whereas in Street Fighter sometimes it’s VERY obvious when there are two different artist (i.e SF issue 4 with the DAn and Sakura scene). But, it’d be nice if at least an artist could do a whole arc and then have it handed to another artist for another arc or whatever. At least it could be semi-consistent that way, which is what Marvel seems to be doing these days.

You mean kinda like how Superman/Batman does it … right? Micheal Turner finished the last story arch and some other guy is doing it now … god i hate the art for the current arch.
Superman/Batman does it based on writers and story arcs. Street Fighter has had at least 2 artists on it since the book began, and they’ve each been assigned their own arcs/characters.
Nothing’s changed.
Just because they get someone other than Alvin to do most an issue doesn’t automatically mean the art quality has dropped.
@Irish Gamer: You seriously think Mike Turner is better than Carlos Pacheco(sp)? 
honestly …
… honestly … yeah … i don’t like this Carlos guys art at all. I think the first and second story arc’s were great …and that issue with Robin and Superboy was awsome (art wise) but i really don’t like this guys work. I know he’s supposed to be some sort of “legend” but i just don’t like it. But then by the same note i don’t like Alex Ross either. I think it’s cool and i think he’s incredibly talented … but it doesn’t please me the way other do. I love Jim Lee and Micheal Turner (even though all his women look the same).
Just wondering.
I figured it was a style thing.
I’m more drawn to the manga/anime style myself (I’m pretty picky about that, though), but when I look at Carlos’ stuff, I look past his style to his storytelling, his angles, page layouts, stuff like that. That’s what makes him a “legend”. Ross is Ross and no one can do what he does nearly as well.
I do, however, like some of Turner’s pin ups and whatnot. Mostly because he has pretty much the best colorist in the industry working side by side with him.

I don’t know much about the industry … i pick up on some names of people i like. I love the SF/DS artist for the main story… i love Turner and Lee … but they are also my favorite stories … i don’t look at how he chooses to draw a scene … i just look at the final product. I guess i’m a shallow fan but i also think i’m typical too. I’ve always felt that Alex Ross made his heroes look over weight or stocky some how… just don’t dig it.
I like anime style … sorta. I can’t stand alot of it. When i used to collect anime my favorite movies were Fatal Fury 2, Ninja Scroll, SF2 the animated movie, Akira, Demon City Shinjuku, and Record of Loddos Wars (the new one with Spark).
I love this issue of DS and can wait for SF#13. 
But what going through my mind is what happen to cannon busters?
