Saw a couple copies of DK2, the Dark Knight 2 by Frank Miller, in the bargain bin where i buy my comics. The vendor told me either you love it or you hate it. Anybody read it? Should I just pick it up anyway since it’s %50 off cover price?
At 50% off, just buy it. I love it. Probably one of the few who do. But that’s why I’m such a rebel, baby.
But in all seriousness, you do need to brace yourself because it is completely different from DKR. If you expect a straight-up sequel, then I think the different sensibility of DKSA will possibly be so off-putting that you won’t be able to appreciate it for what it is. It’s more of a punk rock version of Batman than anything else I can think of.
I didn’t like it. There was too much pressure from DC for a sequal and when Miller finally delivered it, it sold poorly.
Thanks for all the replies, i think i will just pick it up since it’s half off. Anybody else want me to pick them up a copy?
I’m heading over to golden Apple comics on melrose cuz they got a black friday sale going on. Go figure, i’m gonna drop a paycheck over there right now.
I didn’t care for it either but at half off that’s a bargain.
I really enjoyed it. Well worth checking out, especially for half-off.
It’s really different, but there’s a lot of really really great moments and stuff throughout.
It’s a lot of fun, though it’s most definitely DKR Batman (as opposed to Year One Batman, who was just tame enough to be mistaken for ordinary Batman).
I will say this: Frank Miller writing Batman on a bad day would be infinitely better than Jeph Loeb or somebody like that writing Batman on a good day. At least Miller has something challenging and potentially relevant to say about the character.
love it.
Speaking of TDK2, Zack Snyder wants to transform Frank Miller’s comic book into a film.
Chances of that happening might be slim to none.
If it weren’t for a bookshelf full of comics for him to leech off of, do you think Zack Snyder could get a job washing windows?
At least he’ll change things so Joker doesn’t die. OH NOOOS WE HAVE TO BE SENSITIVE TOWARDS HEATH LEDGER FANS OH NOOOS! Pretty much the same deal with 9/11 and the Watchmen movie’s new ending, booo…
Bah, it’s nowhere near Batman Dark Knight…
Miller did a shitty sequel on purpose so he wouldn’t have to continue making them.
Even 50% off is too much for this, i’d recommand trying to read it before buying.
Committee Guy: “We like your script for Dark Knight, but we have some notes about the ending. Suggestions, really.”
Snyder: “Go on.”
Committee Guy: “Well, we feel that in this day and age, having Superman and Batman fight it out at the end would no longer be relevant, and we just want to run a possible alternative idea by you.”
Snyder: “Look, I’m a huge fan of comics. I really am. And I understand them, I really do, so I really want to be careful with this. I’ll listen to what you have to say, but I just want you to know that I still have every intention of keeping Dark Knight pure.”
Committee Guy: “I’m sure we’ll reach a meeting of minds over this. Our idea is to take Superman out of the story and replace him with a large robot. And–don’t stop us until you’ve heard it–Batman will wear the mecha suit from the end of Kingdom Come. I know it doesn’t fit with the script as is, but I’m sure it can be figured out, and besides, we think it’ll be good for toy sales. Also, we’re thinking about taking out Reagan and making Osama bin Laden the despotic leader of America. You know, to enhance the whole villain angle.”
Snyder: “That is just… beautiful.”
That’s an interesting way to put it.
My two cents: It’s a good standalone story in the sense that you could have some generic superheroes who have similar relationships with each-other and still get the desired effect. But it just feels awkward for a Batman comic… although the ending was kind of surprising.
That reminds of how Jon Peters wanted Kevin Smith to have Superman fight a giant mechanized spider when Smith was writing Superman movie script.
Too bad we didn’t get to see that until Peters was able to produce Wild Wild West.
I just read DK2 last nite, although the artwork leaves a lot to be desired, I loved the story. I really enjoyed the belittling of superman, with his weaknesses augmented now that he and everyone else is a lot older.
I agree that Jeph Loeb on one of his better days writing batman, is somewhat on par with Frank Miller on one of his off days writing batman.
It is a much different book than DK, personally I didn’t like. I stopped reading it half way, Frank Miller seems to be out of place when writing nowadays.
BTW, Jeph Loeb is pretty horrible nowadays, bad as in Marvel wants to get rid of him, but he is on contract so they can’t horrible.
Nah, I wasn’t saying they’re on par. Miller would still be way better. When Miller goes wrong, his stuff still has its merits. Even when Loeb’s not outright fucking it up, his stuff is still derivative and hacktacular.
dk 2 was ok. dkr was the best
ouch!
